This next mix comes courtesy of Berlin based Radical Softness, and with a name lent by the homonymous praxis, activism here is par for the course. The Rawmantique and Tilt resident delivers exactly what the label on the tin says: an embrace of the emotional inner self and a celebration of freedom and self-expression, with a special focus on FLINTA visibility. The music? Through this medium their aim is to explore that emotional inner world as a means of bringing communities together be they in Germany or Pakistan. The mission is clear, the music a little harder, at least for this latest instalment: this is no holds barred techno with a nod to trance. Percussive mayhem, a boundless form of resistance expressed through juggernaut beats and future-ready synths. A primal sound through which the methodology of presence and vulnerability can allow us to meet ourselves and others on dancefloors across the world. A look back at Philippa Pacho’s profound performance in our Room 01 at the positivesource showcase, which she co-founded hand in hand with Blue Hour. The Stockholm-born artist delivered a knife-edged vision to techno during a two-hour memorable set at her imprint night in Fuse.
 
Like a gentle hold, Philippa's narration is as tactile as poignant. Dark without being obscure, musing yet energetic, no one can doubt the decade of musicality that has flowed through her veins ever since. Drawn to sharp kicks or a few clipped vocals here and there, Philippa Pacho's mix is an invitation, or even more an exploration, to a complex and appealing inner world. A stand-out.

Paris based DJ/Producer Benales is something of a veteran act in his native city of light. He’s played at Laurent Garnier’s Rex, the much-missed Concrete as well as La Station and Berlin staple Tresor. Since the 90s’ twilight years he’s crafted and perfected a raw and utilitarian stripe of techno that’s seen him share the spotlight with the likes of DVS1, Steve Bicknell and James Ruskin. Those references should give you an idea of his sound’s direction of travel, a deep order of ascetic basslines stripped of frills as the Motor City intended. And that goes for his productions too: with names like Construct Re-Form, Sino, Freddy K’s KEY Vinyl, Mitsubasa and Analog Solutions a few of the labels putting out his work (and there’s more in the making). His keen ear and feeling for crowd have earned him an eager audience over the years, and reputation as a go-to for organisers of legendary clubnights Europe-wide. If you’re curious and looking to let yourself fall under his spell, this latest dose of nefarious and wall-shaking beats has you covered. Bassiani Podcast 196 is steely-eyed techno geared for long-haul raving, 100% commitment to the cause required.

A rising name in Berlin’s ever crowded pool of talents, Eerste Communie resident Windfuhr has been developing his own idiosyncratic persona at the junction of heavy-traction 4x4 rhythms and deep, hypnotic folds of intricate melodies and exotica-laced electronics. Minimal in essence but maximal in effect, his compositions bridge the gap between stripped-back functionality and dreamy escapology, neatly coordinating the throbbing cavalcade of racy uptempo machine funk with layered, modular-like transmissions as his feverish drum programming leads the charge. No doubt Windfuhr’s name is one you’ll hear a lot more in 2024.

Amsterdam based DJ MARRØN’s name comes from the enslaved Marrons, who centuries ago, cast off their chains and went to live in the forests of Suriname. Inspired by Afro Deep and a number of great names in the history of Motor City beats, as well as more recent incarnations on the other side of the Atlantic, MARRØN’s sound is aptly liberating and reasserts the foundational link between african rhythms and techno. It’s a hypnotising onslaught of beats with which to lose yourself for a few hours in a sweaty basement. Though it was during the pandemic, under a different format, that his podcast series took off full tilt and gave him the platform to play the former. Nowadays his purist sets have their home at Sunday jaunt Eerste Communie, a community building mission and event series he started with a group of friends, with extra bookings all over the map. Key to his sets is something he describes as ‘constant energy flow’, a kind of forward-pitched rhythmic momentum that keeps him and his attendant crowds going. Simple but powerful and expertly devised, overlapping rhythms delivered in high definition and a mile a minute. Bassiani Podcast 212 is 69 minutes of meticulously crafted textures and seductively layered beats from this decidedly gifted mainstay of the Amsterdam scene.

For my return to Open Ground, I had the idea to record my full set and post it online. Nothing can really describe that club, the sound system, the room accoustics, the way everything has been designed just breathes passion and dedication. Just amazing crew and always a treat to come back there.
The vibe there was absolutely amazing, and I guess you really just have to experience it on the spot to really get what it's like. 

But yea, here's the 3h30 journey we've embarked on there this 8th May, and I hope you enjoy it !
