We’re approaching the end of 2022, a year in which a lot has flourished and we were allowed to dance with you again without restrictions! To close off this year we’re back with the annual December Series where we invited four artists to showcase their sound, every week until the new year starts.

The penultimate podcast of the year will be provided by the France-born Berlin-based artist, Olivia Mendez. Olivia is a record proxenete, dealing grooves across territories her unique sound can reach. Developing her sound continuously, Olivia showcases a vast musical inspiration across genres in her selections. Her sets are a cross-pollination of the old school with the avant-garde, aiming to keep the magic encoded in music alive. Olivia is also the founder of the FLINTA collective KONVENT, intending to create positive spaces to reinvestigate and elevate the discourse on contemporary feminism, through site-specific music and art intervention.

Throughout the month of July, RYC teams up with the Georgian monument of techno that is Bassiani to bring you a healthy diet of weekly mixes courtesy of its amazing cast of residents. Revving up the engines, Ndrx strikes first with two hours of his mind and body-entrancing pyrotechnics. Creator of bespoke floor narratives that defy the laws of gravity, Ndrx will have you whirling off into orbit thanks to his ever-reliable instinct for selection and a laser-guided precision in DJing. Diving deep into origami-esque dub folds and drilling his way farther across squelchy, 90s-informed uptempo territories, the Tbilisi maestro casts out nines as to his Bassiani stalwart status, exemplifying his levels of floor-destroying abilities with utmost boldness and panache. This next mix comes courtesy of Berlin based Radical Softness, and with a name lent by the homonymous praxis, activism here is par for the course. The Rawmantique and Tilt resident delivers exactly what the label on the tin says: an embrace of the emotional inner self and a celebration of freedom and self-expression, with a special focus on FLINTA visibility. The music? Through this medium their aim is to explore that emotional inner world as a means of bringing communities together be they in Germany or Pakistan. The mission is clear, the music a little harder, at least for this latest instalment: this is no holds barred techno with a nod to trance. Percussive mayhem, a boundless form of resistance expressed through juggernaut beats and future-ready synths. A primal sound through which the methodology of presence and vulnerability can allow us to meet ourselves and others on dancefloors across the world. Setaoc Mass is better known for his vertiginous 4/4 Techno, but for this latest Zenaari Mix the Mancunian polymath explores his musical leanings in a totally different capacity. This one’s a love letter to one of the UK’s most compelling electronic exports: IDM. The 90s phenomenon is close at heart for many of today’s most prominent artists, having had a staggering influence across genres and continents and an outsized legacy given the relatively small niche from which it began. In a note on this mix, the DJ/Producer laments its relative inaccessibility in 2023, adding: ‘I would personally love to see more IDM nights in clubs’, with an extra credit: ‘shout outs to my brother Fluctuosa for pushing this genre forward and staying true to the roots.’ This one’s an in-depth study of the sound and its lesser known derivative Braindance, permeated by the urban wobbles of British Dubstep and delivered in hour-long format. Haunting sounds from the aether, a barrage of hallucinogenic breakbeats and glitchy neural musings, Zenaari Mix 004 is a full-brain workout from the widely acclaimed SK_eleven label head.

Closing the chapter of our Bassiani takeover for July, here comes Tbilisi’s Kvanchi, providing the very kind of fire we needed to top off a month of Georgian heat over at RYC. Infused with deeper Detroit tech flavors and strains of effusive acid hoodoo, Kvanchi’s mixes are testaments to the old-school sound, all set at bringing dance floors to a simmer through nonstop bouncy momentums and bespoke soulful selections. True to this approach, Kvanchi’s RYC podcast keeps it buoyant from start to finish, as it nimbly navigates the frontier between hi-NRG house traction from back in the day, electroid / breaks-heavy charges and a touch of ghetto-tech-informed irreverence. Clearly toasting to the Motor City’s heritage, a most fitting wrap-up to that longed-for Bassiani x RYC takeover. We hope you enjoyed the journey as much as we did.

Next up comes a very special b2b recorded live at the club back in July. Frequent Bassiani collaborator and Future Terror resident/organiser, Japanese maverick Haruka has come a long way since being discovered by DJ Nobu at a gig in his hometown Tsuruoka. The younger protégé has taken a well-earned step out from behind Nobu’s shadow and developed a formidable strain of loop techno to make his former master proud. His talents behind decks are demonstrated by unequivocally shrewd track selections and remarkable feeling for atmosphere, gradually rising compositions that creep towards their heady apex over the course of many hours. In Zitto he finds a kindred spirit for this latest Bassiani Podcast 182. A newer recruit to the techno cause, this Detroit-loving Georgian is a well established anchor of the Bassiani roster with his own designs for a DJ-crowd alliance. His self-reported calling, to gauge the room and play by feeling. In this the two are brothers in arms, delivering a two and a half hour Podcast seething with emotion, suspenseful techno from the depths, a symbiotic endurance run from this pair of enigmatic masters.

Function’s tale begins with a gregarious mother who would keep him occupied as rookie selector for neighbourhood gatherings while growing up in Brooklyn and New Jersey. Music was his world, and it wasn’t long before he found himself standing in awe before Jeff Mills in 90s NYC at the infamous nerve centre of Club Kid hedonism Limelight, where he went on to pick up a Thursday-night residency himself. Few DJs can claim to have been around during such a moment in club history, but ten years later came another. His friendships with Regis, Silent Servant and Female turned into the much acclaimed collective Sandwell District, a pivotal sound for an era that forced everyone’s attention towards Berlin. There he became Berghain resident and played a role in shaping the club’s fabled musical opus. In the years since (and following Sandwell’s dissolution) he’s matured in his own right, with a number of mesmeric releases (most recently ‘Green EP’ released on his self-run imprint Infrastructure back in May), collaborations with the likes of Vatican Shadow, Luke Slater and Steve Bicknell, a heavy touring schedule that criss-crosses the world at rapid clip and Bassiani residency to boot. Function’s techno is an ambient fog in which sinister arctic synths and perilous rhythms collide to produce an exquisite fusion that would be hard to mistake for anyone else. Those grainy textures, subterranean ripples and punishing kick drums are a hypnotic rework of his many influences: 90s loops with a more modern and sharper industrial edge. Bassiani Podcast 186 is an impassioned live-recording from the club that weaves through a number of hammering tracks and steadily climbs towards its furious climax. A hair-raising three-hour beast courtesy of this decorated techno behemoth.
