Stockholm raised/Berlin based, Philippa Pacho started her journey in the fold of the contraband Swedish party scene, followed by the beginning of a residency at Under Bron back in 2012, much of the subsequent decade spent perfecting her musical fusion of old and new. Co-conspirator of label and event series positivesouce (along with Blue Hour) and DJ double act STHLM Murder Girls (Johanna Schneider), her name has been slightly under the radar but steadily gaining traction and justifiably so. For her the mission is simple: she’s an ice-cool mover and wants to make her fans join the dance with her finger-on-the-pulse selections and slick, body-focused beats. Well, it would be hard not to follow that cue. For Bassiani Podcast 161, this techno-provocateur delivers muscle-flexing big room sound engineered to pack a full punch in the club, spacey loops for dancefloor dreamers, with a driving and seductive bassline that’s sure to quicken your pulse.

Throughout the month of July, RYC teams up with the Georgian monument of techno that is Bassiani to bring you a healthy diet of weekly mixes courtesy of its amazing cast of residents. Revving up the engines, Ndrx strikes first with two hours of his mind and body-entrancing pyrotechnics. Creator of bespoke floor narratives that defy the laws of gravity, Ndrx will have you whirling off into orbit thanks to his ever-reliable instinct for selection and a laser-guided precision in DJing. Diving deep into origami-esque dub folds and drilling his way farther across squelchy, 90s-informed uptempo territories, the Tbilisi maestro casts out nines as to his Bassiani stalwart status, exemplifying his levels of floor-destroying abilities with utmost boldness and panache. One for the hall of fame.

Originally hailing from the Bay Area, Jamaica Suk has found a proxy home in Berlin, where since 2012 she has been perfecting her captivating strain of Techno chaos. Her young passion for music was fostered by a doting grandfather, and found its earliest expressions when she trained in Jazz and joined a number or Psychedelic Rock, Shoegaze and Math Rock bands. This synthesis is key to deciphering her recent work, heavily arithmetic and thought through, cerebral and brawny in equal parts. This was the winning formula which led her from monthly Techno parties at 222 Hyde Street to the active schedule she now keeps darting from club to legendary club in her adoptive city. Her sets are ritualistic workouts for body and mind, monolithic Techno that pulls no punches. As for her production work? She’s just as keen to publish that through her very own Gradient imprint and merits just as much consideration. Bassiani Podcast 177 is a bass-packed studio mix recorded by this intriguing Techno engineer, an hour of compelling and turbulent sonic fervour.

Second Tbilisi-based resident to grace our special Bassiani x RYC summer collab, Nebbieri steps in with two hours of straight mind-altering material for the buffs. A deluge of uptempo alien wares and left-of-centre breaksy manoeuvres blended with homing hi-tech warheads, Nebbieri’s delivery takes no byway to get its message across. As with all Bassiani in-house jockeys, she undoubtedly masters the art of transition and radical tempo switches to perfection, and the ruthlessly addictive buildups she unreels here attests to her magnificent mixing skills and unfaltering resolution in wreaking absolute havoc wherever she gets to play at. Beware an atomic summer with Oppenheimer coming to theaters mid-July. Meanwhile here’s Nebbieri nuking out the competition, clean and tidy.

Setaoc Mass is better known for his vertiginous 4/4 Techno, but for this latest Zenaari Mix the Mancunian polymath explores his musical leanings in a totally different capacity. This one’s a love letter to one of the UK’s most compelling electronic exports: IDM. The 90s phenomenon is close at heart for many of today’s most prominent artists, having had a staggering influence across genres and continents and an outsized legacy given the relatively small niche from which it began. In a note on this mix, the DJ/Producer laments its relative inaccessibility in 2023, adding: ‘I would personally love to see more IDM nights in clubs’, with an extra credit: ‘shout outs to my brother Fluctuosa for pushing this genre forward and staying true to the roots.’ This one’s an in-depth study of the sound and its lesser known derivative Braindance, permeated by the urban wobbles of British Dubstep and delivered in hour-long format. Haunting sounds from the aether, a barrage of hallucinogenic breakbeats and glitchy neural musings, Zenaari Mix 004 is a full-brain workout from the widely acclaimed SK_eleven label head.

Closing the chapter of our Bassiani takeover for July, here comes Tbilisi’s Kvanchi, providing the very kind of fire we needed to top off a month of Georgian heat over at RYC. Infused with deeper Detroit tech flavors and strains of effusive acid hoodoo, Kvanchi’s mixes are testaments to the old-school sound, all set at bringing dance floors to a simmer through nonstop bouncy momentums and bespoke soulful selections. True to this approach, Kvanchi’s RYC podcast keeps it buoyant from start to finish, as it nimbly navigates the frontier between hi-NRG house traction from back in the day, electroid / breaks-heavy charges and a touch of ghetto-tech-informed irreverence. Clearly toasting to the Motor City’s heritage, a most fitting wrap-up to that longed-for Bassiani x RYC takeover. We hope you enjoyed the journey as much as we did.
