Haiku poetry and music.

Naviar Haiku is a music project in which artists are invited to make new music inspired by a weekly assigned haiku poem. Participation is free and there are no limitations in the songs’ length or genre.

Haiku is a traditional and short form of Japanese poetry consisting of three lines: it’s about moments of objective experience which lead to deeper considerations about life and nature. The juxtaposition of two images or ideas and the consequent creation of a gap in the imagery gives the reader (or, in this case, the musician) the chance to complete the poem with his/her own interpretation.

This project is about expanding the meaning of a poem beyond its words, and the active role of the reader in haiku poetry, unique in the literary realm, is what inspired this project.

“Create a sonic diary of the past year with a dozen five-second segments” —

I took 5 sec segments from 12 of the 18 tracks that I have had played on Radio National (Australian national radio station) on the "sound Quality" programme, which showcases innovative, experimental and inaccessible 'music'. it has been running for 20 years until now it is being cut (probably due to the 254 million dollars worth of funding cuts thank you Mr Abbott)

Step 1: Please record the sound of an ice cube rattling in a glass, and make something of it.

Step 2: Upload the finished track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud.

Background: Longtime participants in, and observers of, the Disquiet Junto series will recognize this single-sentence assignment as the very first Disquiet Junto project, the same one that launched the series on the first Thursday of 2012. Revisiting it a year and two years later, on the first Thursdays of 2013 and 2014, provided a fitting way to begin the new year. Now, at the start of the fourth year of the Disquiet Junto, it is a tradition. A weekly project series can come to overemphasize novelty, and it’s helpful to revisit old projects as much as it is to engage with new ones. Also, by its very nature, the Disquiet Junto suggests itself as a fast pace: a four-day production window, a weekly habit. It’s beneficial to step back and see things from a longer perspective.

This will be my third year of the ice music challenge- time moves so fast! For this project I used the same sample I recorded two years ago. Over Christmas I got a copy of Numerology, a modular midi system and used this to break the original sample into little rhythmic fragments. These were triggered by a launchpad over the original sample played through a delay and vibrato effect. The launchpad was also used to trigger the drum patterns.
Numerology is a fantastic bit of software, I'm only just scratching the surface but it's great at generating serendipitous combinations of events. Happy New Year!

**Production Notes**

Happy 2015 everyone!

Just returned from an icy vacation in southern Bavaria, so the challenge was just right. 
Took the same samples I recorded for the Disquiet Junto piece 105 (https://soundcloud.com/analoc/strawberry-cubism). Used a lot of resonators to extract something which turned out to sound like a guitar. Also, all the drums and noises derive also from the "cubic material". 

Added a piano, a bass and a cheesy organ, then it was tweaking time. Four hours, lots’a fun.

H. A. E. - Ice Mice [disquiet0157-icemusic2015]

I went back to my recordings of ice from last year's project. This time I took the initial loud ping of the ice block falling into the glass, and one of the later rattlings, when some of the ice had melted and there was a bit of water noise. I processed the ping using PaulStretch and it turned into a wail that moves one semitone up then down. I also stretched the rattling by a factor of roughly 6, then processed that three different ways, using U-he's Runciter filter and Audioworks' 3Plex. I copied the initial rattling 6 times and fed it through the Uhbik-F flanger and other FX, producing by sheer accident something that sounds almost like a human voice.

I went back to the ping, stuck a delay on it with a lot of feedback, then made another track that used Uhbik-G to turn it into an industrial noise.

At that point I had made a percussive/noise track, to which I added a patch from RobPapen Quad playing the same phrase as the stretched ping, E-F-E. I used the same motif but slowed down on a Parsec pad which plays after the intro and in the last part of the piece. I changed the notes and the pattern for the middle 32 bars.

The piece still showed no sense of real progression. I removed most elements during the 16-bar intro, made the volume of the noise track swell gently. The  wail is only heard at the start of bar 17 and will play every 16 bars thereafter. I removed the industrial rhythm until the middle section and used it twice afterwards, to give a different flavor to the third section. I used another Quad patch, saturated and distorted to be heard above the surrounding racket, to play a very simple melodic phrase to make this piece more like music than just noise.

I'm not too happy with the end, as the piece mostly just stops; I put in a final echoed ping to avoid having my usual trite fade-out. What I am happy with is that I was able to create this piece fairly fast and decisively.

In The Ice [disquiet0157-icemusic2015]

I confess I did not read the assignment directions close enough and missed the bit about selecting the least important story from the local news site. The first story when I checked in this morning was about a vigil in the city centre for the victims of the Charlie Hebdo massacre. As it is an event that has upset me deeply I was keen to use this as a source.
I recorded my voice reading the first two signs and threw it into an iPad app "Sparkle" , an effect rather like a vocoder which allows you to modulate target audio with a different audio source, in this case my voice modulating a piano loop and messed around with the pitch and envelope controls
I also chopped the recording into little chunks and randomly triggered  them through delays. Finally mixed the two together with a bit of reverb ambience, uploaded and retired for the night :)



The Assignment: Go from noise to signal with words.

Quite often Disquiet Junto projects actively avoid the human voice. This week’s project engages directly with the voice, and with language.

Step 1: Select the least important story on the front page of your local newspaper or the home page of your local newspaper’s website.

Step 2: Select the first or first two sentences of that story. Combined the resulting text should have between roughly 15 and 25 words.

Step 3: Record yourself, or someone else, reading the text aloud. You can use text-to-speech, though it is by no means required.

Step 4: Break the recording from step 3 into tiny parts.

Step 5: Produce an original piece of music in which the randomized “noise” of those tiny parts heard out of order slowly, over the course of one or two minutes, comes to form the full original statement.

Step 6: Add tonal and rhythmic material to the results of step 5.

Step 7: Upload the finished track to the Disquiet Junto group on SoundCloud.

Step 8: Then listen to and comment on tracks uploaded by your fellow Disquiet Junto participants.

Deadline: 11:59pm wherever you are on Monday, January 12, 2015.

Vigil For Charlie(disquiet0158-syllablegumbo)

I try to stay away from the news because it's always so negative or boring.  It doesn't help that newspaper web sites are nasty places with pop-outs, modals, auto-play videos, Facebook comments, and god knows what else lurking behind those Flash widgets.

But I liked this "least important story" because whoever wrote the opening paragraph did it with a lot of rhyme.

Around 1986, when I was living in Kansas City, I purchased the LP "Break Through In Grey Room", an album of cut-up recordings by William S. Burroughs (who lived in nearby Lawrence, Kansas) and which proved to be very influential to me.

For this Junto's instructions, instead of going for the literal "noise" I went for "tiny parts heard out of order" - which included a bit of an "almost-homophone", something I repeat in the brief coda as a matter of clarification once you've heard the full original statement.

Lamb's installation outside Wagga Wagga, known as 'The Wires', became the focus of VIBRATING STRING in 2010 and his use of piezo contact microphones became a key influence on Bassling's recent album celebrating the 2012 centenary of Leeton: FOR 100 YEARS

The 2013 album WHILE collects tracks produced for the Disquiet Junto; while the piece Reimagining The Murrumbidgee features riverside ambiance collected to create a soundtrack for an exhibition of the same name.
