Bastard Jazz is proud to present the debut EP from Brussels based production duo Eric P & LuiGi aka MonkeyRobot. Their trademark: exploring the boundaries of soulful music between 90 and 120 bpm. Catching eyes and ears worldwide through their work as 74 Miles Away (Melting Pot Music), and Hip-Hop production under the moniker Infinitskills, alongside radio play from Gilles Peterson, Lefto, Anthony Valadez (KCRW) & Kev Beadle and Tall Black Guy, who selected their standout “Basement Infusion” track to be on his Tempo Dreams compilation album (released in June on Bastard Jazz), and alliance between the label and M.R. seemed natural. 

Here on their self-titled 12”, MonkeyRobot deliver four diverse tracks that showcase their skills behind the boards, the MPC and the keys, with a keen ear for the dancefloor. Kicking things off, “Brick Stomach” is a synth-heavy four-to-the-floor 120 BPM joint that comes off like a Floating Points visit back in time to 1980’s Detroit with it’s rolling snares, arpeggiating synth bassline and cloudy pads. Next Up, “Northern Light” filters shimmering space disco vibes through big, thumping instrumental Hip-Hop drums and moody analog bass. On the flip, “Rosè Gris” takes things in a funkier direction at 100BPM with it’s syncopated drums, irresistible lead, squelching bassline and all manner of synthesizer explorations. Rounding off the EP is “Last Days”, which still manages to inject a funky 80’s analog sound into it’s melancholy downtempo vibes. This is a seriously strong debut from a truly musically talented duo – keep your eyes open for more!

Bastard Jazz Recordings is proud to present the sophomore album Curiosities by New Zealand multi- instrumentalist and producer Lord Echo (aka Mike Fabs). An enticing sonic excursion that effortlessly transcends genre and geography, the release finds Echo flexing his dual-mastery of 60's production techniques and modern dancefloor aesthetics, while also highlighting the vocal prowess of his soulful compatriots through a flowing blend of boogie-laced Funk, disco-primed Dub, futuristic Soul, and timeless African rhythms.

Fabs, known worldwide for his production work with NZ’s biggest Reggae export The Black Seeds, drew a groundswell of excitement around his debut solo album Melodies in late 2010. The independent release became a cult classic strictly through word-of-mouth, championed by tastemakers like Gilles Peterson (who played it repeatedly on his BBC Radio 1 show), Oliver Wang (Soulsides) and Richard Dorfmeister. Re-issues of the album soon followed in Japan and Europe, with vinyl copies quickly becoming a hot commodity among discerning collectors around the globe. Echo was introduced to Bastard Jazz’s DJ DRM in 2011 (via Detroit producer Recloose), and a limited 7” vinyl release on the Brooklyn-based imprint soon followed in 2012, precipitating this full length release with the label.

Curiosities picks up right where Melodies left off, with the sun-drenched psychedelic dub sounds of tracks like “Bohemian Idol” (featuring vocals by Toby Laing of Fat Freddy's Drop), and the jerky funk vibes of cuts like “Digital Haircut” and “Street Knowledge”. The album provides a wealth of DJ fodder, with forward thinking 70s-inspired disco tunes such as “Molten Lava” (featuring the soaring vocals of Leila Adu), as well as analog Afro-infused burners like “What Is That Feeling” and “Put It In My Head” (complemented by the golden-voiced Mara TK of Electric Wire Hustle fame). Down-home spiritual jazz/electronic meanderings ("Ghost Hands", “Arabesque”) provide a counterpoint to Echo's driving cover-version of the Pharoah Sanders & Leon Thomas classic “The Creator Has a Master Plan”. His inspiring take on the track is uplifted by the soulful singing of Lisa Tomlins (who's notable vocals on Echo’s rendition of Sister Sledge’s “Thinking Of You” made it a standout hit from his Melodies album).

The finely-tuned collaborations throughout Curiosities underscore Lord Echo's pivotal position in the thriving New Zealand music scene. "I generally only work with people I know quite well personally", says Echo humbly. That personal and organic approach to creating his music is revealed as the album unfolds, layer by delectable layer. "I made this record primarily with DJs in mind," he continues. "They are generally people who really love music and are often obsessed with various aspects of it. I'm not making music for people for whom it's just some background noise in their lives, I'm making music for people for whom it IS their lives. And for better or worse, I guess I am one of those people."

A diverse, yet grounded LP chock full of head-turning sounds, Curiosities further pushes Lord Echo’s repertoire into the realm of the inimitable, and is sure to pique the interest of discerning music lovers from down-under to the big apple.

Tony Momrelle, one of the UK’s most significant and exciting soulful singer-songwriters, is back with a revelatory seven-track EP delivering edge, variety and the message, loud and colourfully clear, that this, entirely, is his time.

Tony Momrelle has been a student of music since the age of eight. One of the UK soul scene’s finest contemporary exports, he has worked with everyone from Whitney Houston to Sade, fronted legendary band Incognito for over 10 years, and continued to steer Reel People alongside Oli Lazarus. His new EP follows a long line of quality Reel People Music releases including Amazing, Star, Golden Lady and Time, but this is his first solo venture for the imprint.

Just in time for Valentine's day, Bastard Jazz is proud to present a lovesick 7" debut from Vancouver/Montreal duo Potatohead People (aka producers Nick Wisdom & AstroLogical). On the "A" side of the 7", "Back To My Shit" is a lovelorn tale of breakup and redemption featuring the rhymes of Detroit's Frank Nitt (Frank'n'Dank, J. Dilla) with very catchy yet deep synth-heavy production from the Potatohead People. On the flip sidem, we continue the theme with "Love Hz", an instrumental cut with crispy drums, ghostly vocal stabs, a catchy bubbling bassline and pulsing keyboards.

I first found and flipped this Genesis sample in the summer of 2011 and reworked it more times than I'd like to admit. Taken from 'The Love' EP by Colm K - due out on 12" and digital June 3rd on Bastard Jazz Recordings. 

The Cork, Ireland based DJ and producer Colm K is a 2004 graduate of the Red Bull Music Academy, and has been making waves for a few years now with releases including his Bastard Jazz debut 12" 'Basics', heralded 7” and 10” records on sublabel BSTRD Boots (the latter of which is sold-out and regularly changes hands for upwards of $50 on eBay), and his recent shared-billing with Mr. Scruff on a Hypnotic Brass Ensemble remix 12” (on Choice Cuts).

On 'The Love' EP, Colm’s musical vision has truly matured with a fully realized 12” that draws on such disparate influences as Herbie Hancock, 80’s boogie, J-Dilla, vintage House music, Floating Points and Q-Tip productions. Art for the EP comes from graphic artist Donal Thorton, notable for Onra’s 'Long Distance' cover, and many of the Hypnotic Brass Ensemble covers.
