Denver producer and visual artist John T. Hastings aka RUMTUM returns to Bastard Jazz for his second album on the label, “Arcadian Daze”. The album is a contemplative drive down a nostalgic highway, reflecting on a period of his late adolescence growing up in Ohio, spending time at Arcadia Beach on Lake Erie and discovering the likes DJ Shadow, Madlib, Fila Brazilla, early Four Tet, the original Ninja Tune roster and more. Revisiting these coming of age memories, John purchased an older MPC 2000XL and set out to musically capture the excitement of putting his first nascent loops together, inspired by this pivotal era of electronic music that has since birthed movements like such as Lo-Fi/Chillhop, Vaporwave, LA’s mid-2000s Beat Scene / Low End Theory, etc. 

The end result of “Arcadian Daze” is indeed filled with that nostalgic spirit paying homage to those aforementioned sounds, but also presents a forward thinking musical palate that’s very much grounded in RUMTUM’s sensibilities as a producer and time spent learning to program new & vintage outboard gear. The album moves away from the warm, dreamy sounds of last year’s “Isles in Indigo” LP, and touches more into a mystical, pensive vibe with elements of darkness and light.

RUMTUM - Arcadian Daze LP

A modern day love story might go as follows: Lukas and Jonathan, two brothers running Berlin-based label Kommerz Records, started connecting with their favorite new jazz combo Triorität via IG without any business in mind, just to find out that they grew up in the same place – often overlooked, but damn cute city of Darmstadt. 
So why not just meet up during winter holidays in their parent’s garden (social distancing was still a thing in winter 2020) to sit around a fireplace and drink wine from daddy’s stack? A perfect start for a new friendship.

Noa Erni’s extraordinary debut “The Mental Traveller” hadn’t been released at that time, but the trinity of Triorität was immediately caught by Noa’s unpretentious chord play and the idea was born to create some live interpretations of his compositions. The Swiss-born producer and wine merchant (meet him at Friedenauer Weinhandlung) produced his obscure jazz and hip-hop atmospheres as a one man band hidden away in his home studio in Berlin. Childhood friends Triorität, on the contrary, developed their “dancefloor jazz” on stage and in the rehearsal room, finessing their very own melange of 70s fusion, disco as well as modern electronics and hip-hop. With their 2020 masterpiece “ALG0” they perfectly captured the stage powerplay on a 12” record, awarded with a co-sign by Gilles Peterson.

Fast forward into 2021: Ouvo Records, the imprint run by Triorität and DJ Ion, and Kommerz Records are best label buddies and their collaboration “The Mental Traveller - Triorität Session” came to life. Three songs of Noa Erni revisited by Triorität’s Alexander Hoffmann (drums), Gerrit Ebeling (keys) and Grégoire Pignède (bass) in their very own jazz fusion madness. Recorded in summer 2021 at Il Civetto studios in Berlin-Lichtenberg by Christ Hentz a.k.a. Hentzup and mastered by Mark Pfurtscheller, the full EP will be available on all digital platforms November 19th alongside a live video of the session.

Sly Johnson reimagines this iconic funk classic by his namesake Sly and the Family Stone. Following his critically acclaimed album 55.4 , Sly shows that he still has more funk to share with the world.

The original Sly and the Family stone track bookended the funk era, where jazz was replaced with funky riffs. Johnson takes the 1969 slap bass funk and modernises it in his own funky neo-soul style.

The ‘Dilla-Timed’ production is married seamlessly with Johnson’s soulful vocals, with Laurent Salzard on bass and Anthony Jambon on guitar , this cover fits right in with the vibe of the much loved 55.4 album.

RUMTUM returns to Bastard Jazz with the second single from his upcoming LP "Arcadian Daze", due out in Spring of '23. "Echo Drift" shifts RT's production from the dreamy, subaquatic haze of his previous LP into a bit more hard hitting territory, with a sparse drum break, swirling percussion, ghostly vocal samples and lush pads on resting on top. The track is a continuity of progress from this rapidly developing producer to watch.

Tommaso Cappellato - Ascension

We love to support new artists at MIMS and Rupert Cox is no exception. The talented pianist is the latest signing on London's essential Albert's Favourites label, and today they share his beautiful debut single, "Embers".

Rupert is an engaging and versatile pianist whose sound has already reached people through work with China Moses, Judi Jackson, Rhys Lewis, Myele Manzanza and many more.

Citing Blake Mills, Genevieve Artadi and Brad Mehldau as pivotal influences, his solo music covers a huge range, often melancholic, reflective and cerebral but unafraid to play with positivity and joy at times. 

His introduction to the world, "Embers", carries the imprint of artists like Eno and Laraaji, a beguiling, ambient leaning piano exploration, lifted along by sparse percussion, sensitive synthesiser and guitar play.

Albert's Favourites co-founder Adam Scrimshire shared some more background on how the signing came about: "We kind of had a mission this year to see what was possible with the label and the most fulfilling part has unquestionably been seeing the family really grow, and grow through natural connections. Rupert was first introduced to me by Yusuf Ahmed of Qwalia, who came to us through Huw Marc Bennett. This is the dream really, all these personal connections and new friendships. Rupert's album is really special and we're grateful to get to represent it."

The single introduces you to some of Rupert’s rich sonic palette while leaving so much to be discovered. We can't wait to her more from this essential new creator in the London music community.
