Ambiant rap

Digging through proverbial crates of new music goodness was a tough one this week. I really had to sift through a heap of rubbish to find some true gems. Surprisingly, I love this aspect of music hunting. Developing your taste in sound to the point where you really know what’s good and what’s not. It’s one of the ways I came to know my true self.

Not to get too esoteric here, but defining my taste in music over the years has been one of the most useful tools for introspection that I have in my quiver of self-knowledge. To listen to music critically, to engage with why I like something more than something else, to know why I listen to some music intently for the lyrics and others I couldn’t remember what was sung even after 1000 listens, just that it has that vibe. I love it. It’s human and it’s rich.

A great example of this is the new Death Grips album, of which I’m featuring the track “Birds”. I know I mentioned them last week, but I’ve been so interested in what they are doing sonically that I had to throw a track on the list, though they typically aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. The emotional response I get from them as they push different boundaries in sound is rare, so boom, listen to it. Let it tell you something about your own story.

From a lyrical perspective my standout track of the week comes from Sampha out of South London. His new track “Happens” basically describes most of my relationships

The name might sound familiar as he regularly collaborates with the likes of SBTRKT, Jessie Ware, Drake, and Koreless, prolific to say the least. It’s also worth mentioning that he’s on one of my favorite labels, Young Turks, and just dropped a new EP, Dual, which you can find here.

Heading to the mountains this weekend for some fresh powder.
