Canadian minimalist instrumental label Moderna Records presents their annual piano day collection featuring twelve pieces from composers and pianists around the world. Their 2023 compilation 'Fractals' is centred around the upright piano, with a curation focused on the label’s signature melodic minimalism. The contributions were selected with great care, while showcasing each pianist’s unique flair on the instrument. Fractals includes pieces from Akira Kosemura (JP), Hiroco.M (JP), Jacob David (DK), Eik Octobre (DK), Ole-Bjørn Talstad (NO), Julia Gjertsen (NO), Sten Erland Hermundstad (NO), Mike Lazarev (UK), Pêtr Aleksänder (UK), Jozef De Schutter (CH), Felix Rösch (DE) and Nat Bartsch (AU). Christopher Colaço and Philipp Schaeper have known each other since moving from their Southern German hometowns to Berlin. Together they studied Jazz piano/drums at the Berlin University of Arts and immediately dived into the vibrant Jazz scene.

Playing and working together shaped their musical common sense. In 2013 Christopher and Philipp had the opportunity to score their first movie (Oh Boy! – A Coffee in Berlin) and formed an old school sounding Jazz band with friends. After winning the German Academy Award for best original score, they continued to develop their collaborative project as a duo writing and scoring music.

At the same time they are working on their own music and started collaborating with classical musicians from the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in 2018, which lead to their first debut album. The record 'View From Above' consists of 7 tracks, creating atmospheric soundscapes that mingle between film-music, classical minimalism, ambient and electronic music.

'View From Above' provides a portrait of Christopher and Philipp's journey over the past few years and was recorded in Berlin at Bonello Studios. The renown mixing artist Francesco Donadello gave the record its final touch and it will be released on May 10th worldwide.

Let It Snow

I begun to write this track for last year's Pianoday amongst other album tracks. I was inspired by prepared piano composers and used recordings of the strings of the piano being strummed with the keys taped down to allow them to resonate. I didn't complete it till later on in the year and felt it belonged on the album alongside other tracks that we're being written sequentially at the same time ( https://orcd.co/alone-not-alone-album ) so I'm thrilled to now see it come home and contribute to Piano Day 2020!

In the track delicate beginnings give way to an overwhelming sense of wistfulness, surrounded by the sirens of compassion.  A reflection on the challenges of departure and the need for independence and, in the end, solitude and the possibilities therein. The piano strings we're close mic'd and gently strummed for the intro and background soundscape. Later on they we're hit with the handle of a glockenspiel beater to make the stronger sound for the middle section. The piano melody is joined by bow'd xylophone and string glissando's and melodies to create an atmospheric track that speaks of the tensions of solitude and togetherness, inspired by a visit to Crozon in France and our country's own challenges of leaving the EU and the tensions therein.
