Virtuoso bassist and singer-songwriter Stephen Bruner aka Thundercat returns to the Brainfeeder fold with his first solo material in two years, having already made outstanding contributions to not one, but two, of the greatest albums of 2015 - To Pimp a Butterfly and The Epic - by fellow Los Angelians Kendrick Lamar and Kamasi Washington. 

Mini-album 'The Beyond / Where the Giants Roam' will be released digitally on Monday 22nd June via Brainfeeder.

Hailing from Toronto, Canada, producer / DJ Birthday Boy has been awarded numerous accolades thanks to an eclectic musical style that draws influence from jazz, house, hip-hop, R&B, and funk. Via remixes, original productions, and collaborations, Birthday Boy has won praise from tastemakers worldwide including Pitchfork, FADER, Hypebeast, and more. Having spent the majority of 2017 relatively quiet, Birthday Boy is closing out the year with a sneak peek of what's come in 2018 by way of a new track with Toronto singer / songwriter Trish titled "Magic."

Out today via Brooklyn label Bastard Jazz, "Magic" represents the first cut off a yet-to-be-titled forthcoming EP due 2018. On "Magic," listeners again hear Birthday Boy launch into a rich soundscape of R&B influenced rhythms, a four on the floor beat, mesmerizing synth, and a jarring vocal performance from Trish. The distinctly catchy tune takes additional influence from lauded UK musician Tom Misch whose guitar loop provides the foundation for the track.

Autarkic makes-up part of an unspoken alliance from Tel-Aviv, which is currently altering the state of contemporary house and techno music. Heavy Dreamer, the artist’s first, four-track outing on Life and Death, showcases much of what this bold movement is about, all while pushing it forward into progress.  

Ever-present tones of kraut and punk rock flow throughout the EP, beginning with Some Things To Keep, a pumping, warehouse floor-filler. Autarkic steps up to the mic, often re-amping and distorting his vocal delivery, placing it alongside finely-programmed keyboard riffs, tough drums and further psychedelia. Realistic Guru, the trippiest of the lot, is tailor-made for an early-morning DJ Tennis after-party excursion. Slowing down the pace on Powerhouse, Autarkic hints at moments of Bauhaus’ and Tones on Tail’s doom-and-dance pop, while offering-up a digital-only, stripped-down, bonus version. The title track stands as a testament to this new wave of artists, coming from the shores of Israel’s Mediterranean coastline. Bass, drums and guitar are recorded through bespoke boxes and presented through the lens of modernist club-culture.

Channel Tres grew up in the Compton neighborhood of Los Angeles. His voice is effortlessly deep, as if Barry White didn't realize he was Barry White. "Controller", Channel's debut single on Godmode (Yaeji, Shamir), took classic Detroit house and reimagined it with the surly attitude of West Coast rap. Pitchfork, NPR, Gorilla vs. Bear, BBC Radio 1, Spotify, Apple, and KCRW were early champions, along with Australia's esteemed Triple J radio, who put "Controller" in full rotation.

In advance of his self-titled debut EP (out July 27 on Godmode), Channel blesses us with "Jet Black", another taste of his unorthodox union of four-on-the-floor and Compton. The song is an oozy ode to the blackest of black, over a ferocious modular synth instrumental that takes cues from industrial and early electro. "I never reply when you hit me/ I'm off the grid you can't get me" – it's hard not to feel invincible when this one plays. The video, directed by cult filmmaker Anthony Sylvester, captures Compton at its most contorted, where barbershops double as churches, where liquor stores become after-hours raves.
