More than two years ago "Matasuna Records" already reissued two songs of the gifted Peruvian piano master "Otto de Rojas" on a 7inch single. "El tema de Coco" is another great track on his 1976 album "Superéxitos Bailables", on which he mixed Latin with Funk, Jazz and Disco. The song was reworked by "Retro Roland Riso", known for his Bossa 70 edits and by label founder "Alex SoulBrigada", who now deliver two different versions of this tune for the dancefloor.

"Otto Raúl de Rojas Guedes" (1941-2008) was a Peruvian musician, composer, arranger, musical director of radio and television broadcasts. He's considered one of the most influential figures in Peruvian music of the 70s.

The musical landscape of Peru, especially in the musical epicentre Lima, was influenced in the 1960s by US Funk, Soul or even psychedelic Rock and merged it with Peruvian Cumbia and traditional Criolla music. The young & unknown "Otto de Rojas" started his musical career in this environment and played in various bands like "Bossa 70" and "Los Hilton's". A commercial breakthrough in his career came in the early 70s when he took over the musical direction of the TV show "Trampolín a la fama" and made a name for himself with his talent as an arranger.

He was also active as an arranger and musician for the Peruvian record company "MAG", and as a versatile and talented pianist he has participated in various recordings of different popular rock groups like "Los York's", "Traffic Sound" and others.

Otto released his first successful solo project at the age of 25 in 1976. His songs "Al Ritmo Del Bump-Bump", a cover version of the US hit "Soulful Strut" by "Young-Holt Unlimited", and the song "Choca Las Caderas" are considered one of his greatest successes and represent for many the best songs of Otto de Rojas. In the following years he recorded more albums and was often to be found on the stages of Lima.

In 2008 Otto de Rojas died tragically and much too early. With him, the Peruvian music world lost an unsung icon. However, his music will live on and keep the memory of this exceptional talent alive.

"Roland Retro Riso's" Al-Ritmo Rework on the A-side puts an impressive percussive rhythm layer over the original and makes it to an inimitable funky groover for the dance floor.

The "SoulBigada" Edit on the B-side transforms the song into a deep disco-funk banger, focusing on the deep rolling bassline, funky wah-wah guitars, brass and the virtuoso piano playing of Otto de Rojas, giving the song the necessary pressure.

About four years after the label was founded in summer 2016, "Matasuna Records" is about to drop its 25th release. To celebrate this anniversary, Matasuna has dug up another treat and is delighted to reissue two songs from the legendary LP "1973" by Belgian jazz-funk group "Placebo" of jazz legend "Marc Moulin", who is rightly considered one of the rare groove Holy Grails. Both songs are available for the first time as official reissue on 7inch vinyl - the title song is even available on 45 for the first time ever. Of course there was a new mastering for the best possible sound.

"Marc Moulin" was born 1942 in Ixelles, Brussels where he also took music lessons. He studied economics and political science - but his passion was music, which guided his career. He made his first steps in the Belgian jazz scene in 1961 at the Festival "Comblain-la-Tour", where he won the "Bobby-Jaspar trophy" for best soloist.

In the 1960s he was a member of various jazz formations before founding the band "Placebo" with his close friend, guitarist "Philip Catherine", in the early 1970s. The septet recorded three albums and a single from 1971 until its dissolution in 1976. On these recordings Moulin is surrounded by the crème de la crème of the Belgian music scene. The group played a unique mixture of jazz, soul, rock and funk with electronic elements, which Moulin elicited from his Moog synthesizer. Some of these musicians also contributed to Moulin's cult album "Sam Suffy", which was released in 1975.

After the dissolution of Placebo, Moulin took a break from jazz and appeared as a producer for various artists. In 1978 Moulin founded the synth pop band "Telex", with which he recorded five longplayers between 1979 and 1986. These recordings are considered groundbreaking for the Detroit techno and transatlantic house scene.

In the late 1990s, Moulin returned to his jazz roots when he combined his two great loves, jazz and electronic dance music. He signed to "Blue Note", where he released three albums. His first album on Blue Note 2001 sold over 100,000 copies worldwide.

Parallel to his musical activities, Moulin was a radio presenter, journalist and composer, but also worked as a journalist and radio editor. Moulin died on September 26, 2008 at the age of 66.

"Polk" is opening the single and couldn't be a better start: the irresistible groove digs deep into the ear. Marc Moulin's virtuoso piano playing wafts around the driving wah-wah guitar, the bass line and the beats. The brass section sneaks in discreetly to create a grandiose sound spectrum. Jazz-Funk at its best!

Without a doubt, "Balek" is one of the most extraordinary tunes on the album and rightly enjoys cult status not only among rare groove collectors. But also in the Hip Hop scene Balek is a hot joint – e.g. El Da Sensei or Mos Def have dropped their rhymes on this beat. Obscure synthesizer soundscapes with psychedelic sounds, supersweetened keys, unique brass passages and kicking drums give the song a magical aura. Great!

MIMS is excited to share the wild & incredibly rare Venezuelan big band sound of "Socorro Auxilio" by Germán Fernando y su Orquestra, taken from El Palmas Music's forthcoming compilation, 'Color De Trópico', released Friday November 20.

'Color de Trópico' is a carefully-compiled work of healing and reconstruction, documenting a special moment in the history of Venezuelan music, when the country’s democracy was just a few years old and the profound impact of the oil industry on society had only just begun. DJ El Palmas and El Dragón Criollo have chosen eight impossibly hard-to-find jewels, originally released between 1966 and 1978, remastered and reissued here for the first time on vinyl.

According to music journalist Alfredo Churión “those who saw (Germán Fernando) attested to having witnessed something indescribable”, a mysterious man who doubted even his sanity and of whom today practically nothing is known. He was someone who dared to show a completely foreign effrontery, signing unintelligibly, moving frantically and throwing himself to the ground before the stunned gaze of his audiences. Venezuelan writer Luis Armando Ugueto states: “his art could go from the sublime to bad taste – and it was craved by the press – when he subjected viewers to strange songs where he pleaded for socorro and auxilio [help].” 

Germán Fernando had a histrionic proposal that was a thousand times misunderstood and that even popular presenters of the time like Renny Ottolina dubbed “his follies”. A theme close to the jazz orchestra soundtracks of James Bond and Batman accompanies the showman here who comes across like a creole Screaming Jay Hawkins. He creates a whirlwind of sound that, while as agile as a featherweight, is also capable of knocking out all the old ideas Venezuelans themselves have about their music.

DJ El Palmas, aka Maurice Aymard, tell us, "We started to make this compilation almost one year ago, and it was very complex to make it happen for several reasons. First of all,  find the legal rights of the songs and to negotiate with old record labels, it´s something that takes a lot of time and effort, many phone calls and emails back and forth for almost six months.

Besides this there was another task, to find the right 'gems' that could fit into our concept, and that could express in music what we were looking for, but this also would lead us to other challenges.

The first one was that most of the masters were not available, we had to start searching for old vinyl records and most of them were not in the market,  and also the ones available were very expensive. A lot of digging had to be made, all these  'fun' obstacles we found on our way were a big adventure for El Drágon Criollo and myself.

We also wanted to express in a new vinyl record, the history and the era of Venezuela, as it was at the end of the 60's and the beginning of the 70´s, when there was an explosion of genres , from jazz, cumbia, salsa, disco, joropo, boogaloo and pop, it was amazing what was going on in this beautiful and tropical country at that time. 

Also the connection between El Drágon Criollo (Paulo) and I was super important, he is Colombian and I am Venezuelan, so we have so many things in common but at the same time different points of views, so this was also super fun, it was a learning process for both of us....."

El Dragón Criollo adds, "The compilation of Color de Trópico is in the end like an art exposition of different artists in the same gallery. So the curatorship was made very carefully and with tons of problems at the same time, because the pieces to expose were not easy to find. Here we are trying to show the versatility of what was going on in Venezuelan music at that time, it is really an eclectic mixture of colors."
