This drone/ambient track was a live guitar recording, but of course I couldn't resist to start editing, reworking, embellishing, throwing stuff out. Mostly played through my Boss ME70, and recorded and edited in Reaper.

Traveled Far, Maybe too Far

Melody Zenith is an alternative pop singer, songwriter, and producer. She was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and is the daughter of a legendary local guitarist. Her interest in music began at an early age, playing songs on the family piano by ear and writing her own songs. As a teenager, her laptop became the new home of her musical ambitions as she began to craft beats and make unique homemade demos.

It wasn’t long until she moved to Los Angeles to pursue her ambitions, playing local shows and perfecting her sound. Her music shifted in a more electronic direction, focusing on shimmering synth sounds and haunting but powerful vocals. Her pop music is inspired by post-punk, dark wave, and other forms of dark underground music. 

She released her first single ‘Strangers’ under Melody Zenith in October of 2023, and her second single ‘Fame’ in December of 2023. Since the beginning of 2024, she has been steadily building buzz in the underground music scene thanks to the hundreds of popular Spotify playlists that have added her tracks, along with receiving college radio airplay on over 25 different stations around the country, even landing a charting position in Portland. The future looks bright for the rising star!

This project is a bit of a left-over from a relatively recent trip to Britain. London is truly an amazing city and - fittingly - the subject of this track. I’ve been wanting to follow-up my track “Airport” with something that continues to explore a similar approach, but is thematically different. In this case, rather than using one continuous sample, “City” is made up of a hodgepodge of environmental samples that convey some of a controlled chaos I experienced. I also had a chance to experiment with some interesting new tools which really led to me getting to where I wanted to go with this track.

Behind the Masks

Alien Cubensis

My goal is to create sonic landscapes that capture the listener and take them to unknown places while building and maintain a secondary (musical) world to keep them immersed and actively engaged within it. Music should be inherently enjoyable to listen to, yet provide enough tension to keep it interesting enough for active listening. I also try to tell an aural story or narrative that blends Electronic Music’s past with its present.

By using real-world environmental samples, I seek to anchor the listener to something that is familiar and immersive. Curiosity compels a deeper level of listening which helps develop, build and sustain the secondary world.

My stronger influences are 70s and 80s electronic and progressive musicians such as Brian Eno, Vangelis, Edger Froese, Klaus Schultze, David Sylvian, Holger Czukay, Popol Vuh and Pink Floyd, as well as more recent artists such as The Orb, Aphex Twin, Future Sound of London, Mathias Grassow, Steven Wilson, Bass Communion, Explosions in the Sky and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. There are unabashed references and homages to these artists and (many more) which is consistent with the post-rock approach to modern music.

I grew up in a home where music was loved and the radio was always on, which gave me early exposure to a variety of genres including jazz, classical, contemporary, pop and rock. Playing musical instruments throughout my early and middle-school years, allowed me to became proficient in several woodwind instruments, the electric bass and manipulation of reel-to-reel tape recordings. The exploration in creating experimental tape effects had a large impact on my current musical expression.
