Sounds Like Jorge - Segundo
SLJ-2 is a 100 % vinyl mix of amazing Jorge Ben versions by Batukizer created in April 2020 during lockdown while digging deep into our Brazilian music archives.

We continue our work from SLJ-1 presenting a unique selection of world class cover versions of Jorge Ben songs mixed with a couple of super rare non-album Jorge Ben tracks.

Opening the mixtape is a gospel/spiritual inspired Brazilian choir version of the 1963 classic Chove Chuva (raining rain) melting into Bebeto's tribute to Jorge Ben using the same melody as an intro and stealing lines and titles from JBJ epic songs throughout this amazing homage.

The mix centers around the 1970s versions from Myriam Makeba, Wilson Simonal and lesser known cover versions on obscure 7 inches. Finishing off is the Jorge Ben original song about the mythical Saci Perere figure from Brazilian folklore.

Brazil 2014.
The african heritage in Brazil is ever present. And perhaps in the music more than anywhere else. The beats of samba, bossa, maracatu, coco and the many other regional rhytms have influences stretching back to western africa.

Brazil is by far the single country in the world that received the most african slaves - estimated more than 3 million - and also the last country to ban slavery in the 1880’s. As a comparison the US in total received only 600.000.

The Brazilian afro-catholic religions candomblé and umbanda are directly linked to the Yoruba, Fon and Ewe culture of western africa. In brazil the african deities became mixed with catholic saints and practices in order to preserve the ancient ways and heritage. Like other religions, it's about spirituality, energy and storytelling. Here music is knowledge. Vinyl is culture. Disco é Cultura.

This first released mix EVFB is called Afro Brazil Orixa Mix - Primeiro (ABOM-1). The songs in the mix has been played out loud on festivals in Denmark and Finland in the summer of 2014 - and has seen very strong reactions on the dance floor.

It is a percussion driven journey into Brazilian afro rhytms, strong voices and spirituality. From pop music to capoeira rituals.

It shows how deeply the orixás has been rooted in Brazilian music, rhytms and language - in music like samba, funk, bossa and even Brazilian popular music (MPB). A lot of artists and bands has taken great pride in writing songs to or about the orixás - especially from the 1950s to the 1970s. It is only one of the fascinating discoveries you can make digging deeper into Brazilian music and language.

Copenhagen 2014.
The mix starts with Amazon Jungle recordings by the Danish descendant Johan Dalgas Frisch. The album does not say when it is published but my guess from what I can find is around 1970 - probably exactly that year. He devoted his private life in Brazil to the preservation of the forest and did some rare and unique recordings of the indians, birds and forest sounds.

The mix ends with a Danish version of Dorival Caymmi's fisherman chant Promessa do Pescador. It is by legendary Danish jazz/latin guitarist Christian Sievert, who was also a great bird lover.

This recording - only a few years after Sergio Mendes version - underline the importance of the afrobrazilian heritage and the uniqueness in Brazil's cultural mix. It was recorded in Nørrebro, Copenhagen - in 1976 - a few 100 yards from my house.
Even back then the impact from this music spread all over the world and influenced many people. Without the internet.
It is obvious on the track that it is not Brazilians singing because of the pronounciation of "Iemanjá" - but still it's very powerful music!

This song is only a little over one minute long. The liner notes states that they over recorded 1 hour straight, but for some reason they cut it down to two 1 minut versions in the studio. I'm trying to see if the master tapes are still around.

The proud tradition of making killer cover versions in Brazil has fascinating us for years. Ever since we started our SLJ (Sounds Like Jorge Ben) mixtape series, we have been collecting both odd and amazing versions of Brazilian classics. DJ: Ras from @Batukizer

Background of the mixtape:
The idea is to present a collection of 10 relatively unknown versions of Brazilian classics. From Simones epic jazzy version of Clube de Esquinas "Tudo Que.." to Ronald Mesquitas mesmerizing opener - a version of the Elis Regina standard (penned and also recorded by Ivan Lins) "Madalena". This version was never released in Brazil, only Spain, Portugal and Moçambique.

In between you will hear Tim Maia, Bebeto, a 1990s cover of the hauntingly beautiful and ultra rare Samba Groove 2 (My Analog Journal) classic "Grilos da Vida" by Jardes. 

Last song is a bossa nova standard by João Gilberto by the Choir of the historical mining city of Ouro Perto. Which one? We will let you listen and decide, because the jazzy choral arrangements are made o be shared ❤️

EVFB MIX: FCOB - 1 / Four Corners of Brazil - Primeiro

Hiii. Batukizer with a fresh mix of old tunes. Straight up dancing party!

Going from the early 60s to mid 70s this mix explores the corners, rhytms and emotional depths of Bossanova. The "hush-hush revolution" music genre developed by teenagers in Copacabanas small apartments in low voices in order not to disturb the neighbours, but also as the reaction of a positive new Brazilian generation to the boring, romantic sadness of the 50s samba cançao.

In the words of Roberto Menescal bossanova was about "The sea, the beach, the beauty of Rio de Janeiro, our dreams and plans of a life, that had barely started yet". Bossanova quickly became mainstream MPB (Brazilian Pop Music) and thousands of albums and singles were released, some might even still be re-discovered.

ABOUT THE MIX.
This mix is a 100% vinyl 25-track blend of native indian music, experimental 1970’s sound, capoeira songs and afro brazilian ritual music and chanting. Some of these elements are present in the three MPB songs that are placed in the mix to balance out the listening experience keeping the mix fresh and the sound evolving.
The intention with this mix is to enhance the experience of the beautiful and simplistic indian tribal music by placing it together with contemporary music and religious afro-brazilian styles. The process of the EVFB mixes are a long selection process of filing through hundreds of records. Along the way comes ideas for mix tapes - often inspired by two or three songs. The dogma rules are only vinyl owned by EVFB, only Brazilian composed music - or music recorded by Brazilian artists. The mix must be under 1 hour. Effects and scratches are allowed during the recording process.
Often hours of work are put aside because the mix does not “stick together” after the initial recording. It often happens that I discover new tracks or albums I want to buy during the research and mix selection process. Depending on price and availability I might buy these records, but they never make it to the mix, they are used as fuel and inspiration for the coming EVFB projects - thus ensuring an ongoing project that never ends.

Sounds Like Jorge - Primeiro.
SLJ-1 is a 100 % vinyl mix by Batukizer created in January 2016 before flying to Rio to DJ at two Jorge Ben shows at legendary venue Circo Voador.

The first part of the mix features alternations between JBJ tracks and versions by other artists. The first track is from 1960 and recorded by Polish Jazz musician Wroblewski's Quintet that worked as backing with José Prates (Tam Tam Tam) show during one of their European tours. The afro brazilian show concept was later refined and heavily commercialized as the Oba Oba shows.

In first 30 minutes it's a mix of 1960's and 1970's and the mix then moves into mixing 1970's with 1980's grooves which Captain Jorge and his crew master like no other band. There a great deal of Brazilian boogie and disco out there, but some of JBJ's instrumental parts are so incredibly funky they deserved to be looped on and on. That's why we need two copies of each record ❤️✌️

The careful selection process of this mixtape began more than 6 months ago when we were invited to DJ the “secret” Lost in Sandoz psych party in Copenhagen. The name of the mix however came later and pays respect to the Brazilian book LSD (Lindo Sonho Delirante - Beautiful Delirious Dream) published in November 2016 by Bento Araújo. This novelty book showcases 100 important Brazilian psych records from 1968-1975.

Salvador de Bahia.
It’s the home of Afro-Brazilian culture and pride. From the vibrating streets of Pelourinho to the traditional Mercado Modelo Market and beyond, Bahia is full of food, art, and music that can be discovered or rediscovered. It’s also a great place to dig for records!

The musical traditions and heritage is deeply intertwined with Africa and the Orixás – the Afro-Brazilian spirits and deities brought to Brazil by the slaves – and almost all artists on this mixtape call out these spirits and deities – with the most popular being Iemanjá (Fertility) and Xangô (Justice). The Orixás are the centre of religions called Umbanda (South) and Candomblé (North), African diasporic religions shared with many other Caribbean and Latin American countries. But nowhere are these religions as strong, organised or acknowledged as they are in Brazil.

And so in this continuous journey to expose the strong connection between Brazil and Africa through the music of the past, this second Afro Brazil Orixá Mix mixtape is dedicated to Salvador and the Brazilian state of Bahia.

In 2020 we played a few gigs abroad (Norway, Belgium) and toured in Brazil before Corona. The summer was spent touring and DJing extensively in Denmark with more than 20 gigs over the span of the summer.

In 2018 and 2019 BTKZR has Toured in India and Brazil, played Gilles Petersons Worldwide Festival, Mellotron in Paris, NTS Radio, bookings at Spiritland in London, Copenhagen Jazz Festival and much much more.

In 2017 Batukizer has played a score of major Danish Festivals: Roskilde, Stella Polaris, Metropol, Volume Festival. In addition events and major club nights with deep and magnificent music. A German tour, Yuka Club in Tunis, Alma Hotel in Barcelona.

In 2016 Batukizer has played at: Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Roskilde Festival, supporting legendary Azymuth in Copenhagen, warming up for Jorge Ben at Circo Voador in Rio, The Lake Radio, Jolenes in Copenhagen, SommerChill Festival.
