In Hour 2 we welcome Khruangbin , the Texan trio who take influence from 1960's Thai funk (their name literally translates to "Engine Fly" in Thai ) and include Laura Lee on bass, Mark Speer on guitar, and Donald “DJ” Johnson on drums. Their debut album from 2015 ‘The Universe Smiles Upon You’ is steeped in the bass heavy, psychedelic sound of their inspirations and was recorded at their spiritual home, a remote barn deep in the Texas countryside. The band listened to a lot of different types of music on the long drives out to the country but their favorites were 60s and 70s Thai cassettes gleaned from the cult Monrakplengthai blog and compilations of southeast Asian pop, rock and funk. Their mix is a sublime selection of music that includes Arthur Verocai, Return to Forever, Serge Gainsbourg, Miles Davis and some incredibly rare records from Christy Azuma, Ahmed Fakroun and Theodora Ifudu. You can catch them playing alongside Kendrick Lamar, Jamie XX and Kamasi Washington in Hyde Park, London on 2nd July, their US Tour kicks off in September and they have a remix release coming out in early June.

It took 2 years to the Paulista dj and selector Radio Gringo (@radiogringo) for collecting all these obscure Brazilian love songs. Radio Gringo mainly focuses on jazzy, boogie, disco and ethno music, especially what comes from Brazil. This mix has a balearic flavour, "brazelaric" I should say. It's all about cozyness, the delicate sound of the sea, sun, love, melancholy and eternity.

Cosmo Vitelli hasn’t slept since 1973. Instead, he’s replaced slumber with the tireless exploration of dance music, sharing his finds as an accomplished DJ and label manager but also as an esteemed producer, with heaps of records, remixes and edits under his belt.

After spending his childhood between West Africa and Central France, a young Cosmo Vitelli moves to Paris in the early 90s. More indie kid than clubber, closer to rock, post-punk, and krautrock than techno, he plays guitar in various rock bands until he figures out he’s having more fun fiddling with a 4-track recorder and a sampler than with guitars.
 
He releases his first in 1998 on Etienne de Crécy’s Solid, followed by a string of EPs and remixes that are now part of the DNA of this golden era for French electronic music, notably his album Clean which Virgin releases in 2003. After a stint in the ruthless world of majors, Cosmo Vitelli creates I’m a Cliché in 2004. His fiercely independent label stands out to this day in the underground electronic music landscape for its uncompromising approach, simultaneously paying tribute to venerable figures and taking risks by exploring music from the margins, with a distinctive knack for finding talented artists before they break through (such as Simian Mobile Disco, Azari & III, Moscoman and Red Axes).
 
In parallel, he’s rekindled his love for guitars and pop music with Bot’Ox, Vitelli’s side-project with Julien Briffaz of Tekel. They released EPs on labels such as DFA and DC Recordings, LPs on I’m a Cliché and toured extensively, even scoring a gig at L’Olympia in Paris.

Currently based in Berlin where he’s relocated his studio, Cosmo is back to releasing music under his own name. In the last few years, he has released several EPs on I’m a Cliché and an LP of edits and reworks, as part of the Edit Service series. 

2019 was a busy year for him, with acclaimed releases including Holiday in Panikstrasse, a two-part LP for Malka Tuti along with the Un Episode Psychotique EP on Ivan Smagghe’s Les Disques De La Mort. This will carry on in 2020, with the release of a triple LP compilation entitled “Bongo Beats & Bankruptcy: The Sound of I’m a Cliché” he’s curated for his own label.

When he is not in the studio or travelling for gigs, he curates No Weapon Is Absolute along with DJ Sundae for a monthly show on London’s NTS radio.

Andry co-operates Japan based pajama factory Phingerin with his friends. Aside from that, he seems to spend a lot of time delving deep into a wide area of peculiar music. The mix he sent for Volume 45 is something a bit more conceptual than past mixes, so deserves a bit of an explanation :) 

It’s titled “tic toc”, and is about the physical clicking of a clock. He also imagines it as an audio skit of “someone waking up late” for an obligation. It’s a musing on our relationship with the clock, “sometimes it passes fast, sometimes it feels slow, sometimes it stops, sometimes you forget about it, sometimes you get reminded and the ticking n tocking stays in your mind : /“… It comes off super tender and will no doubt make for a nice companion in a moment like now where time is ticking in a very odd way. 

“Is it this repetitive rhythm that trained us to move to the beat?”

Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. Never thought of myself as an artist. I'd say casual beatmaker and varied dj.

Q. How long have you been a part of the NY music scene?
A. Since 2012. Things have changed so much, way more interesting DJs and diversity in the scene. 

3) Tell us a little bit about this mix.
I wanted to include old and new music but with a cohesive mood. Dub, jazz, psychedelic down tempo that progresses into a bit more upbeat stuff. It's more of a challenge to mix those types of songs and it's something I don't get to do in the club as much as I'd like, so it made it really exciting to put together.
