There is also a German verse in the song which refers to a runner's event.
Every year at New Year's Eve there is a run in Kempten in the south of Germany - The "Kemptener Silvesterlauf". It is a runner's cult event and an opportunity to meet people and catch up. So you feel high and free at the end of the year and at the beginning of the new one.

I remember Christmas with my dear old aunt sally
she liked to hug she liked to kiss she was so close to me
she gave me a nice gift
that lasted all my life..
I am not sure if it was wrong or it was right

I got herpes on a Christmas
back in 1995
now my lips burn and I think it has spread into my left eye

now what is a boy supposed to do
i have herpes and I gotta go to school
how the fuck can i play this cool
How am i gonna say that I got it from
a nice Christmas kiss from dear aunt sally

Now I got the gift that keeps on giving
and as long as Im living
it will be here till the end
i cant live without it

and thats the charm is this whole thing

it was Christmas
and I couldn't turn away
I got the warm embrace of my dear aunt Sally..
and Im still paying to this day

Dirty old town,
it's hard on your feet as you wander around in the night.
Don't get down,  
but no one is out there, just looking for you, that's all right. 
You might be pretty. 
But that shit won't help here you know.
You've gotta go.
Inside we're all ugly,
and a few years of drinking will show. 
To those in the know. 

As the plastic bag catches the breeze from the seaside.
Some men just seem to do alright. 
The drunks on the sofas are nursing a pint, until they settle down for the night. 
You're still running.
But there's no one to catch you you know.
You just fall.
It keeps on coming.
One day you'll be running it all. 
Just take the call. 

Oh the foam from the seas, and the salt on the breeze gives away.
Dead end town. (x2) 

All your money, 
won't fill up the holes in your soul though you wrapped them up tight.
You're still drinking, 
but that's better than some who were caught by the brown bang to rights.
Still out hunting,
fact he's dressed up and ready to go. 
Where's the show?
Summer loving,
the winters are much harder though.
Where's the snow? 

As the fog from the sea rolls up through the dead streets and just blocks out the midsummer Sun,
and a girl from your school walks past looking about 50 with her little oik of a son. 
She's still pretty,
but there's something that's empty inside,
behind her eyes.
There's always pity,
It's the last thing remaining that glows.
