We're excited about VDS Podcast Nr.022 - our last VDS Podcast for the year of 2022! Closing this amazing year with a seasonal atmospherical string-packed journey is none other than one of the heads behind the legendary Pingipung label, Mme Bing from Hamburg, Germany.

Mme Bing, aka Andrea Wienck, is a passionate vinyl collector. She has honed her musical taste while co-running the Pingipung label for over a decade, as well as by working in record shops. She prefers her melodies raw and gloomy, and she selects them very carefully - it’s a rare but always delightful moment to catch her live at the decks.

Dive into this beauty of strings, guitars and melancholic melodies, which Mme Bing herself calls “The heart as a paperweight”. Mme Bing recommends listening to this set with a purring cat on your chest.

"A selection of records I have been digging in the North of France and Paris for the last months. The mix is influenced by my move last year from Tokyo (Japan) to Roubaix (France). Excited to share these sounds that have been entering my life lately: French and different oriental influenced folk and jazz with often medieval structure elements or instruments. Also one Egyptian and one Japanese record. This collection of tracks has been also inspired by my nomadic like lifestyle lately, travelling a lot, always on the move and encountering talented, raw, honest and inspiring people along the way."

Precious Nothings

Wenn sich eine Band auf schmissige Partyhymnen über den Tod und die Apokalypse versteht, dann The Burning Hell! Die kanadische Formation um Sänger und Songschreiber Mathias Kom hat es im Laufe ihres fast 20-jährigen Bestehens perfektioniert, Songs im Spannungsfeld von fröhlich-düster-melancholisch-komisch zu schreiben und sich dabei genretechnisch nicht festzufahren. Auf „Ghost Palace“ (2024), ihrem mittlerweile zehnten Album, bewegen sich The Burning Hell zwischen Garage-Folk, Lo-Fi-Power-Pop und Ukulele-Balladen und versehen ihre bitterbösen Songs erneut mit allerlei popkulturellen Referenzen. 

Bei ihrem Besuch im ByteFM Studio am 25. April 2025 hat die Band ihren Song „Ghost Palace“ live gespielt.

I went down to the mall on Saturday after cartoons
I made straight for the tape store
I knew exactly what to look for
I skipped the candy shop and the clown with the animal balloons I saw it on the rack with the other new tapes
That baby face with the gap-toothed gape
And I grabbed one quick like a pervert in a video store
I guess I was shy, it was my first time
So I joined the girls with the curled bangs in line
And when I got back home I discovered what my ears were for
That was my first day in the world of pop music
Where the sound of a drum or the strum of an acoustic Could pop it all open like a blister in the sun
A world where Johnny played guitar and Jenny played bass And they started a band just to see their face
In a magazine ‘cause what else is there to do for fun
A few years later drawing logos of bands
On backpacks and binders and the backs of my hands
And writing out lyrics with the help of rewind, pause, and play
Math class flashed past in a blur of zeros
Daydreaming about all those musical heroes
Who never needed numbers to say what they had to say
Meanwhile I developed an unholy affection
For the older girls in the smoking section
With the boots and the buckles and the pins and the circle-a shirts Their music was rough but strangely enough
Turned out I liked getting angry and shouting about stuff
I knew the message was meaningful though I didn’t understand a word
And so I discovered another world of music
Where the kids are alright, just like the Who said
You count to four then play the one or two chords you sort of know A world where “hey ho, let’s go” is a legitimate chorus
And you can search the stacks and thumb the thesaurus
But there’s no synonym for rock and roll
Back at that young and impressionable age
I never dreamed some day I’d be the one on the stage
But now that I’m here I guess I have to think of something to say
So to all the young girls and young guys out there
Experimenting with drugs, experimenting with hair
Press record on your four track, or whatever kids are using these days
It’s life or death but it’s also just music
And it chooses you, you don’t get to choose it
But once you’re hooked you’re hooked like a rug or a john So hats off to Ivan and all the rest of the bands

Beloved visitors,

Know your roots, appreciate and accept them. I was heavily socialized with European dance music of the 1990s with the whole genre of trance music playing an essential part in my life back then. There's something quite addictive about this mixture of heavy bass-driven beats and trippy synthesizer patterns. Obviously, it's quite a cheesy sound but I recently found myself revisiting some of the music from back then, especially since I fell in love with psy-trance last summer and I should actually be dancing on a festival to this sound these days but since it's the summer of Corona I have to skip that for now. So, instead I produced a mighty throwback mix with some of my personal pop/dance/trance anthems from that specific period of time between 1998 and 2003.

That's the music I listened to in my youth, featuring personal hits and little treasures I recently rediscovered while digging through my personal archives. You can find tracks by producers like Chicane, Blank & Jones, ATB, Paul Van Dyk, Ferry Corsten, RMB, Above & Beyond and a few more in here... all the big players from that big sounding field of electronic dance music. If you free yourself from certain expectations and, you know, whatever is considered cool these days it's actually fun to enjoy this sort of sound and - well - actually, feel the trance. It's quite an epic adventure but so is the music so the length is fitting. Let me know if you need any ID here. Thanks for joining me on this ride.
