The second single to come from musclecars’ debut LP “Sugar Honey Iced Tea!” is a transcendent sonic masterpiece by the name of “Ha Ya! (Eternal Life)”. A nod to the Clark Sister’s original tune bearing the same title, “Ha Ya! (Eternal Life)” gracefully unfolds with the captivating vocal performance by German Jazz Award Winner, Natalie Greffel. Chanting the same spiritual tongues of the original, the vocal arrangement seamlessly invokes profound feelings of devotion and endurance. Paired with a phenomenal flute solo from Underground System’s Domenica Fossati, and a transcendent string ensemble, the track's intricate rhythms and soulful melodies serve as a portal to a realm where the afterlife is painted in hues of cosmic wonder.

Bringing together London, Detroit and Chicago, legendary DJ Ron Trent gives an out-of-this-world remix of Ash Walker and the late Amp Fiddler's 'Afronaught'. The track oozes confidence, building an undulating cosmic atmosphere guided by Amp's lyrics and rooted in driving bass hits. It's the type of remix which could easily send you into psychedelic euphoria at 6am.

Four years on from his explorative third full-length ‘Aquamarine,’ Londoner Ash Walker returned in June 2023 with an equally ambitious follow-up, 'Astronaut'. Alongside a plethora of award-winning collaborators and combining a dizzying array of sounds, ‘Astronaut’ hears Walker push his astral shower of rhythm and vibes to new heights. If 'Aquamarine’ was the take-off of his audial spaceship, ‘Astronaut’ is the cosmic voyage reaching terminal velocity; a rocket-powered masterclass spanning jazz, blues, soul, funk, and reggae.

An avid record collector, Walker has DJed far and wide... from the infamous Royal Mail squat party to the canals of Venice, spinning vinyl in Brixton with The Specials to scattering dub across San Francisco and LA. His own production output is similarly exploratory: his journeys have taken him far and wide, from tunnels under the river Thames to recording local percussionists in the Atlas mountains of Morocco. Inspired by a deep dive of sounds from artists including Duke Ellington, Quincy Jones, King Tubby, Bo Diddley, 4Hero, J Dilla, Pete Rock, Curtis Mayfield, Philip Glass, and Steve Reich; his first two albums, ‘Augmented 7th’ (2015) and ‘Echo Chamber’ (2016) gained attention from the likes of BBC 6 Music DJs Gilles Peterson, Don Letts and Gideon Coe.

Releasing as the title track of her forthcoming debut album, From the Fire is also the 2nd single release from Audrey Powne's self-written and self-produced masterpiece. The track features Audrey as vocalist and virtuoso trumpet player in a song that blends a beautifully laconic drum break with a melody and lyrics which promise both optimism and re-birth.

Taking direct inspiration from two of Audrey's favourite artists, the groove and harmonics in From the Fire are influenced by Herbie Hancock, in particularly his Secrets and Sunlight LPs, both from the 1970s. The layered, harmonised trumpet solo that brings From the Fire home owes its form to Audrey's love of the genius of Roy Hargrove.

Indeed, as well as Hargrove's influence as a trumpet maestro coming into play on the track, Audrey Powne also employs similar recording techniques to those used by Hargrove in his seminal work with the RH Factor. As with the previous single release, From The Fire also highlights Audrey Powne's skills and artistry as a producer and arranger.

Audrey Powne is an artist destined for greatness as a composer, lyricist, vocalist, producer, arranger and musician and in both the singles coming off the From The Fire album we get a taste of the brilliance that is promised in the full album.

‘Entre Chien et Loup’ is the third single and final taster of Project Gemini’s much anticipated, forthcoming second album Colours & Light. A Francophile-flavoured waltz through the depths of emotion, anguish and escape, served up through the lens of Project Gemini’s cinematic style. Featuring the vocal elegance of Gloria’s Wendy Martinez and guitar solo grit of Wolf People/Large Plants’ Jack Sharp, the beauty of the music is also wrapped up in the pain of its context. Shades of darkness, studded with pockets of light.

Having gained a great 6 Music reception with the title track and second single, Colours & Light, Project Gemini aka Paul Osborne presents one of two album cuts that Lyon-based Wendy Martinez features on. Having sent through the instrumental of ‘Entre Chien et Loup’, Paul mentions: “When Wendy sent me back the beautiful vocal parts she’d written, I was completely blown away. She’d totally elevated the track to another level. Lyrically, it documents an individual escaping a destructive relationship, and the song title (‘between dog and wolf’ a well-known French phrase used to describe dusk/twilight) was absolutely perfect. Jack Sharp added the finishing touches with his mesmerising guitar solo.”

Sweeping and celestial, the Francophile touch is heightened by Paul’s analogue saturated, Mellotron playing and the percussive tactility of Eleven 76/Call Sender’s Paul Elliott. A wandering bassline and the expert drumming of Sababa 5’s Raz Man, anchor the track further to its earthly nature.

Founded in 1996 by Peter Adarkwah, Barely Breaking Even (BBE Music) started life as a London club night, taking its name from the eponymous Disco record by the Universal Robot Band.

The label grew from the vibrant early 90's club scene with its first release, Stop & Listen compiled by Dr Bob Jones in 1996, opening the door to iconic series' such as All Back To Mine & Late Nite Tales.

A tonne of releases followed, ranging from Disco to Funk, Jazz to House. In the year 2000, the label celebrated Masters at Work's 10th Anniversary with a mighty box set that featured near 80 tracks.

A year later BBE Music spawned the Beat Generation Series of artist albums, notably introducing J Dilla (Welcome 2 Detroit) & a young Will.I.Am's first solo outing, alongside DJ Jazzy Jeff, Madlib & DJ Spinna, all of whom contributed to this seminal set of long players.

A quarter of a century and well over 500 titles later, having worked with Mark Ronson, Roy Ayers, Questlove, Hugh Masekela, DJ Premier, Dimitri from Paris, Joey Negro, Kon, RZA, Laurent Garnier, Black Coffee, DJ Shadow, David Rodigan and John Morales among many others, BBE Music looks to the future, celebrating its rich heritage while continuing to release a bounty of fresh titles.

The label’s most recent projects include an expansive reissue series from pioneering Nigerian label Tabansi, new imprint ‘Batakari’ in association with Boddhi Satva and the critically acclaimed ‘J Jazz’ Japanese Jazz multi-album project, not to mention the recent landmark 500th label release: a brand new version of 'Barely Breaking Even', featuring Leroy Burgess, Patrick Adams and Louie Vega.

In 2021 BBE Music is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
