CoOp Presents proceed to give you what you need! Following on from the 'Plug One' series, a whole slew of releases are scheduled for the second half of the year, as we enter the next phase of the CoOp Presents universe. First up, the Selectors Assemble crew with a mammoth remix project reinterpreting tracks from LCSM's subliminal album 'Earthbound'. Originally released last year on Dutch label, Super Sonic Jazz, 'Earthbound' was a highly-acclaimed project from a band headed by CoOp Presents label-boss IG Culture, featuring a heavyweight band comprised of some of London's most talented players, including members of Steam Down, Wonky Logic, Nathaniel Cross and IG's label partner, Alex Phountzi, amongst others. LCSM (aka Likwid Continual Space Motion) is an exploration into afro-futurism, inspired by the likes of Sun Ra, but forming a sound entirely unique with a hybrid of bruk, boogie, funk and jazz. The album received rave reviews from the likes of Gilles Peterson, XLR8R and Beat Caffeine, with the vinyl quickly selling out globally, and featuring highly in numerous end of year lists, from Sound Shelter (Sydney), to Bandcamp to The Vinyl Factory, as well as a nomination for "Track of the Year" at the Worldwide Awards and named "Album of the Year" by Rush Hour! So to this new EP released on IG Culture & Alex Phountzi's own imprint. As you'd expect, the Selectors Assemble gang deliver the goods; firing on all cylinders across this 6-track bruk opus. Cengiz kicks off the session with his flip on 'Frequency' ahead of James Rudie's stark sub-heavy version of 'The Box'. There are two mixes of 'More Brilliant Centre', the first from Entek, the second from CoOp Presents co-founder Alex Phountzi. The hyper-tempo'ed 'World Order Is Chaos' sees IG & Alex team up again under their NameBrandSound moniker, and we close out with Xtra Brux's take on 'Let Me' (which originally featured Natalie May & Neue Grafik); keeping it soulful and jazzy but adding drums that knock, as they do throughout the EP, staying true to the cosmic-jazz source material, but re-shaping it exceptionally for the bruk dancefloors. I Don’t Want Your Love is the 4th Single taken from the monumental double album Manifestation.

The track features vocals by Angolan polymath Coréon Dú. Coréon is revered in the worlds of film, fashion, technology and music. His vocals and a rhythmic refrain evokes a chant-like call and response with Boddhi Satva’s production.

Boddhi has also supplied an ancestral mix for the single which showcases his technical abilities to craft an enchanting soundscape. Boddhi’s knack for eye-catching collaboration is also demonstrated with this release, which comes with an animated video and NFT collection produced by Humpata Studios.

The video takes us into a dystopian nightclub future where attendees battle with interacting in real life or through their technological devices.

The NFT release connected to this single is intended to give a platform to young creatives in the Web3 space emanating from Africa.

This release also marks BBE / Batakari music and Boddhi Satva’s first venture into NFTs. NFT holders amongst other benefits can expect free guest list entry into any of Boddhi Satva’s club events in London, Paris, Amsterdam and Lisbon until Feb 2024. More details to follow.

In 2018 Far Out Recordings signed a record deal with Brooklyn born, nomadic producer Jneiro Jarel. Having just put the finishing touches to the recordings, Jarel suffered an ischemic stroke while living and working in Costa Rica and his wife Indigo was forced to set up a crowd fund to cover special medical transport back to the states to receive treatment. The release was put on hold, but thanks to the generosity of friends and fans around the world, Jarel was able to get the care he needed and is now on the long road to recovery. We’re overjoyed to finally announce Jneiro Jarel’s new single Banana Peel (Cáscara de plátano) featuring Masauko Chipembere,, from the forthcoming album After A Thousand Years

Throughout a career that has spanned over twenty years and seen collaborations with MF DOOM, Thom Yorke, Damon Albarn, BadBadNotGood, Portishead’s Beth Gibbons, Kimbra and Khujo Goodie (Dungeon Family), Jneiro Jarel’s consistently distinctive, forward thinking productions, as well as his love for the music of Brazil, made his partnership with Far Out a perfect fit.

Recorded between New York, New Orleans, Miami and Costa Rica, After A Thousand Years features legendary multi-instrumentalist Bill Summers, famed for his work with Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones and Eddie Henderson. The album also features Malawian-American guitarist Masauko Chipembere who has worked with the likes of RZA from Wu-Tang Clan and Ladybug Mecca from Digable Planets.

On lead single “Banana Peel”, Jarel’s outernational perspective makes for a track that is almost impossible to place geographically: you can hear the swing of Jarel’s native New Orleans jazz, the vibrance of Costa Rican rainforests as well as the influence of Jarel’s vast collection of Brazilian records. 

Banana Peel is released as a digital single on the 17th April, ahead of Jneiro Jarel’s forthcoming album After A Thousand Years.

Founded in 1996 by Peter Adarkwah, Barely Breaking Even (BBE Music) started life as a London club night, taking its name from the eponymous Disco record by the Universal Robot Band.

The label grew from the vibrant early 90's club scene with its first release, Stop & Listen compiled by Dr Bob Jones in 1996, opening the door to iconic series' such as All Back To Mine & Late Nite Tales.

A tonne of releases followed, ranging from Disco to Funk, Jazz to House. In the year 2000, the label celebrated Masters at Work's 10th Anniversary with a mighty box set that featured near 80 tracks.

A year later BBE Music spawned the Beat Generation Series of artist albums, notably introducing J Dilla (Welcome 2 Detroit) & a young Will.I.Am's first solo outing, alongside DJ Jazzy Jeff, Madlib & DJ Spinna, all of whom contributed to this seminal set of long players.

A quarter of a century and well over 500 titles later, having worked with Mark Ronson, Roy Ayers, Questlove, Hugh Masekela, DJ Premier, Dimitri from Paris, Joey Negro, Kon, RZA, Laurent Garnier, Black Coffee, DJ Shadow, David Rodigan and John Morales among many others, BBE Music looks to the future, celebrating its rich heritage while continuing to release a bounty of fresh titles.

The label’s most recent projects include an expansive reissue series from pioneering Nigerian label Tabansi, new imprint ‘Batakari’ in association with Boddhi Satva and the critically acclaimed ‘J Jazz’ Japanese Jazz multi-album project, not to mention the recent landmark 500th label release: a brand new version of 'Barely Breaking Even', featuring Leroy Burgess, Patrick Adams and Louie Vega.

In 2021 BBE Music is celebrating its 25th anniversary. To mark this milestone, the label is offering up some special projects, from the 20th Anniversary edition of J Dilla’s ‘Welcome 2 Detroit’, through David Bowie tribute album ‘Modern Love’, to a special new ‘Worldwide’ compilation from old friend Gilles Peterson.
