Cal Tjader was one of the hardest working musicians in Jazz who mastered countless instruments and rose through the ranks working with Verdadero Cuban and Afro-Latin musicians, deviating from the popular Exotica style of the times. When he finally came into his own in the Verve/Fantasy years, his creative talent was matched with sublime audio engineering delivering a crisp and unique sound. From the extended bongo rhythms to the soothing sounds of the vibraphone, Cal was a visionary who managed to bring a new attention to Latin music without compromise. In Paris: The Definitive ORTF Recording captures jazz guitar legend Wes Montgomery on his only tour of Europe on the night of March 27, 1965 at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, France. The first official release of this legendary concert, In Paris is being released in partnership with the Institutnational de l'audiovisuel (INA) with remastered, high-resolution audio transferred directly from the original tape reels. The concert was organized by jazz producer and impresario Alan Bates to the great delight of European audiences who had long wanted to see Wes perform live, but his severe fear of flying had kept him in the states. Featuring an all-star band with pianist Harold Mabern, bassist Arthur Harper and drummer Jimmy Lovelace, with special guest tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin, the deluxe 2CD set includes an extensive 32-page booklet with stunning archival photos taken at the concert from famed music photographer Jean-Pierre Leloir; essays from historian and director of operations in jazz studies at Rutgers University, Vincent Pelote, Resonance producer Zev Feldman and associate producer Pascal Rozat from INA; plus interviews with pianist Harold Mabern, renowned guitarist Russell Malone and more.

BBE Music and 180 Proof Records unearth long-lost intimate concert tapes from one of the greatest composers and bassists in the history of American Music, Charles Mingus. 

Transmitted live by producer and broadcaster Robert “Bud” Spangler for WDET-FM radio, these rare recordings from reels discovered by DJ Amir Abdullah capture Mingus during his week-long residency at the intimate Strata Concert Gallery in Detroit, 1973. This hard-swinging set features the earliest known recording of “Noddin’ Ya Head Blues”, and a rare inclusion of “Dizzy Profile” -- a beautiful waltz never officially recorded by Mingus for studio release. 

Following shortly after the release of Mingus’s orchestral masterpiece, Let My Children Hear Music, these recordings capture a lesser-known Mingus line-up including drummer Roy Brooks and trumpeter Joe Gardner (both Detroit natives), virtuoso pianist Don Pullen, and the innovative saxophonist John Stubblefield. Stubblefield was a recent recruit who performed for five months with the ensemble, leaving soon after this engagement. Later after Mingus’s death, Stubblefield went on to collaborate with Mingus’s widow, Sue Mingus, and became a key figure in the Mingus Dynasty and Mingus Big Band. This recording at Strata is the only known documentation of Mingus and Stubblefield on stage together. 

The performance captured on these tapes is simply breathtaking: five masters of music channeling their greater spirits for an intimate, enraptured audience. It is a time-machine journey into a sensory experience of that February evening in 1973 Detroit; listeners glimpse a taste of the furious energy and compositional sophistication of this monumental modern creator and his jazz workshop.

Founded in 1996 by Peter Adarkwah, Barely Breaking Even (BBE Music) started life as a London club night, taking its name from the eponymous Disco record by the Universal Robot Band.

The label grew from the vibrant early 90's club scene with its first release, Stop & Listen compiled by Dr Bob Jones in 1996, opening the door to iconic series' such as All Back To Mine & Late Nite Tales.

A tonne of releases followed, ranging from Disco to Funk, Jazz to House. In the year 2000, the label celebrated Masters at Work's 10th Anniversary with a mighty box set that featured near 80 tracks.

A year later BBE Music spawned the Beat Generation Series of artist albums, notably introducing J Dilla (Welcome 2 Detroit) & a young Will.I.Am's first solo outing, alongside DJ Jazzy Jeff, Madlib & DJ Spinna, all of whom contributed to this seminal set of long players.

A quarter of a century and well over 500 titles later, having worked with Mark Ronson, Roy Ayers, Questlove, Hugh Masekela, DJ Premier, Dimitri from Paris, Joey Negro, Kon, RZA, Laurent Garnier, Black Coffee, DJ Shadow, David Rodigan and John Morales among many others, BBE Music looks to the future, celebrating its rich heritage while continuing to release a bounty of fresh titles.

The label’s most recent projects include an expansive reissue series from pioneering Nigerian label Tabansi, new imprint ‘Batakari’ in association with Boddhi Satva and the critically acclaimed ‘J Jazz’ Japanese Jazz multi-album project, not to mention the recent landmark 500th label release: a brand new version of 'Barely Breaking Even', featuring Leroy Burgess, Patrick Adams and Louie Vega.

In 2021 BBE Music is celebrating its 25th anniversary. To mark this milestone, the label is offering up some special projects, from the 20th Anniversary edition of J Dilla’s ‘Welcome 2 Detroit’, through David Bowie tribute album ‘Modern Love’, to a special new ‘Worldwide’ compilation from old friend Gilles Peterson.
