Selected by British DJ and vinyl hunter Paul Hillery, new BBE Music compilation ‘We Are The Children Of The Sun’ showcases a shimmering collection of rare folk funk and AOR with a distinctly Balearic feel.

Former tour DJ for Polyphonic Spree and the man behind YouTube channel and mix series ‘Folk Funk & Trippy Troubadours’, Paul Hillery’s lovingly handpicked musical assembly takes in strummed soft rock, blissful beach beats, the soft fizz of electronica, all carried to your ears by a gentle summer breeze.

The music on ‘We Are The Children Of The Sun’ ranges from hazy, long-forgotten early 70s tapes, right through to digital compositions recorded during lockdown in 2020.

“Tune in” says Paul, “and ruminate while consciousness is awoken with transmissions dropping out from the fringes of psyche tranquillity, holding hands with folk-funk that runs deep and hazy, as the bejewelled turquoise waters lap gently at the ocean’s shore.”

Throughout 2022, NuNorthern Soul unveiled a swathe of releases under the Myths of Ibiza banner – a set of digital-only EPs featuring cover artwork by illustrator Emily McGuinness, based on her interpretations of folkloric stories from the Balearic Isles. Now the series is set for its’ belated epilogue, courtesy of North of the Island – the Balearic-minded alter-ego of long-serving Mancunian DJ/producer Neil Scott.

The Feeling Free EP, which features additional production and mixing from PBR Streetgang’s Bonar Bradberry, was originally scheduled for release last year, but major changes in Scott’s life – not least a move to Australia, where the nu-disco scene stalwart now resides – meant pushing it back until he had time to finish the tracks. It was a shrewd move, because the EP now contains some of Scott’s most magical, kaleidoscopic and atmospheric original productions to date.

Proof arrives immediately via opener ‘Sioux You’, a gorgeous mixture of stirring, melancholic synth chords (think Pet Shop Boys’ ‘West End Girls’ and you’re close), deep sub-bass, lilting lead lines, head-nodding drums and layers of Latin-tinged percussion. It’s a terrifically tactile affair that adds a shuffling, sunset-ready lens to Scott’s vibrant, nu-disco-influenced trademark sound.

It's followed by ‘I Feel’, a squelchy, slow-motion, delay-laden nod to synthesiser and drum machine-driven Balearic gems of the 1980s that first featured on NuNorthern Soul’s Summer Selections Four EP this time last year. Blessed with the boldest of synth basslines, authentic drum machine percussion and effects aplenty, it’s an impressive slab of nostalgic retro-futurism.

Scott reaches for glossy, near huggable FM synth melodies on the gorgeous ‘System Junk’, slowly and subtly building up a loved-up groove laden with intergalactic electronics, head-nodding drums, shimmering riffs and a yearning, rising and falling bassline. Even better is astonishing closing cut ‘Tired Sunrise’, a slowly unfurling dusk soundscape rich in clicking drums, yawning pads, echoing effects, blissful synth sounds and the most impeccable of piano solos. It feels like a future Balearic classic.

Emily McGuinness’s cover artwork for the release depicts Hierbas Ibicencas, the “famous spirit of Ibiza” made of local herbs. Hierbas Ibicencas can trace its roots back to monks who lived on Ibiza in the Middle Ages. They grew wild herbs and once preserve them in alcohol, with the resulting liquid being used as a medicinal remedy. According to tradition, Hiberas Ibicencas can only be made with an odd number of herbs – which should preferably be gathered on the morning after a full moon, before the day of San Juan, to guarantee good luck and “add some extra magic to the potion”.

This set was originally planned to run 1hr30mins in an outdoor camp setting, so had to make some tough editing choices.

Founded in 1996 by Peter Adarkwah, Barely Breaking Even (BBE Music) started life as a London club night, taking its name from the eponymous Disco record by the Universal Robot Band.

The label grew from the vibrant early 90's club scene with its first release, Stop & Listen compiled by Dr Bob Jones in 1996, opening the door to iconic series' such as All Back To Mine & Late Nite Tales.

A tonne of releases followed, ranging from Disco to Funk, Jazz to House. In the year 2000, the label celebrated Masters at Work's 10th Anniversary with a mighty box set that featured near 80 tracks.

A year later BBE Music spawned the Beat Generation Series of artist albums, notably introducing J Dilla (Welcome 2 Detroit) & a young Will.I.Am's first solo outing, alongside DJ Jazzy Jeff, Madlib & DJ Spinna, all of whom contributed to this seminal set of long players.

A quarter of a century and well over 500 titles later, having worked with Mark Ronson, Roy Ayers, Questlove, Hugh Masekela, DJ Premier, Dimitri from Paris, Joey Negro, Kon, RZA, Laurent Garnier, Black Coffee, DJ Shadow, David Rodigan and John Morales among many others, BBE Music looks to the future, celebrating its rich heritage while continuing to release a bounty of fresh titles.

The label’s most recent projects include an expansive reissue series from pioneering Nigerian label Tabansi, new imprint ‘Batakari’ in association with Boddhi Satva and the critically acclaimed ‘J Jazz’ Japanese Jazz multi-album project, not to mention the recent landmark 500th label release: a brand new version of 'Barely Breaking Even', featuring Leroy Burgess, Patrick Adams and Louie Vega.

In 2021 BBE Music is celebrating its 25th anniversary. To mark this milestone, the label is offering up some special projects, from the 20th Anniversary edition of J Dilla’s ‘Welcome 2 Detroit’, through David Bowie tribute album ‘Modern Love’, to a special new ‘Worldwide’ compilation from old friend Gilles Peterson. BBE Music will also be looking to the future with more exciting original artist projects, plus merch collaborations events and more...
