Recording under his Raw Essence alias, Dave Lee teams up with Lifford on Do It Again – a soaring soul cut and the second single to be released from his forthcoming album Produced With Love II.

Dave Lee has been one of the UK’s foremost champions of vocal house music and soul for decades, collaborating with acclaimed vocalists and instrumentalists and amassing a hugely impressive discography along the way. A man of many monikers, Lee’s latest single lands under his Raw Essence alias: one that neatly encapsulates the appeal of this timeless slice of soul.

Do It Again is a pure, unfiltered delight: a song so resolutely ecstatic and flawlessly produced its enough to make you weep with joy. Vocals are provided by former Public Demand and Artful Dodger member and longtime champion of UKG and soulful house Lifford, whose silky voice transports you to a time when outfits were unashamedly flamboyant and “funky” had yet to become a dirty word.

Included on the single package is a remix from LAZYWAX, the musical project of Hans Müller and Wolfgang Schneider. Their reinterpretation adds bright chords and an electro-inspired bassline, transforming the organic warmth of the original into an icy, cool-as-hell banger.

"This amazing mid tempo Golden Disco classic was originally released back in 1982 on the New Yorks Moonglow record label. Originally Produced by Greg Carmichael and written by one of the best writing teams of their time, James Calloway, Sonny T Davenport & the legendary Leroy Burgess. In 1988 Leroy was commissioned by Bobby & Steve’s Zoo Experience Records to do a 6 track mini album, with Barley Breaking Even (BBE) being reproduced and re –vocaled by Leroy and Orange Juice Jones man, Tyrone Williams. With the Disco sound still very much at the forefront of today’s club scene.

Groove Odyssey’s Michael Hughes commissioned Opolopo to bring BBE back to the dance floor and what a job he has done. Keeping many of the original BBE elements, Opolopo has signed, sealed and delivered a dance floor classic for the old and the new generation to embrace. It’s 8min of pure good groove, with the unmistakeable vocal tones of Leroy Burgess,

BBE Music revisits Gabriele Poso’s well recieved 2018 solo album ‘Awakening’, with brand new remixes from Opolopo, Seven Davis Jr, DJ Crab and Clap! Clap!.

Reworking Poso’s sumptuous cover of the Roy Ayers classic ‘Everybody Loves The Sunshine’, Swedish powerhouse Opolopo, transforms the track into a disco/funk behemoth, complete with distinctive synth licks and a bass-line so suggestive that it borders on scandalous. The multi-talented Seven Davis Jr give ‘Mi Amigo’ an energetic treatment which ramps up the tempo and places Poso’s intricate and frenetic drumming at centre stage.

DJ Crab turns in a sensitive, smooth and somewhat mournful deep house version of ‘Words Never Work’; a suitable soundtrack for sunset reverie.
Italian producer (and Paul Simon collaborator) Clap! Clap! embraces Gabriele Poso’s afro-latin percussion to the max, transforming ‘The Night Falls’ into a delightful sub-bass driven workout for the dancers.

Finally, Seven Davis Jr returns with an alternate take on ‘Everybody Loves The Sunshine’, laying down a solid house groove, whilst staying true to Gabriele Poso’s sweet and subtle arrangement.

Founded in 1996 by Peter Adarkwah, Barely Breaking Even (BBE Music) started life as a London club night, taking its name from the eponymous Disco record by the Universal Robot Band.

The label grew from the vibrant early 90's club scene with its first release, Stop & Listen compiled by Dr Bob Jones in 1996, opening the door to iconic series' such as All Back To Mine & Late Nite Tales.

A tonne of releases followed, ranging from Disco to Funk, Jazz to House. In the year 2000, the label celebrated Masters at Work's 10th Anniversary with a mighty box set that featured near 80 tracks.

A year later BBE Music spawned the Beat Generation Series of artist albums, notably introducing J Dilla (Welcome 2 Detroit) & a young Will.I.Am's first solo outing, alongside DJ Jazzy Jeff, Madlib & DJ Spinna, all of whom contributed to this seminal set of long players.

A quarter of a century and well over 500 titles later, having worked with Mark Ronson, Roy Ayers, Questlove, Hugh Masekela, DJ Premier, Dimitri from Paris, Joey Negro, Kon, RZA, Laurent Garnier, Black Coffee, DJ Shadow, David Rodigan and John Morales among many others, BBE Music looks to the future, celebrating its rich heritage while continuing to release a bounty of fresh titles.

The label’s most recent projects include an expansive reissue series from pioneering Nigerian label Tabansi, new imprint ‘Batakari’ in association with Boddhi Satva and the critically acclaimed ‘J Jazz’ Japanese Jazz multi-album project, not to mention the recent landmark 500th label release: a brand new version of 'Barely Breaking Even', featuring Leroy Burgess, Patrick Adams and Louie Vega.

In 2021 BBE Music is celebrating its 25th anniversary. To mark this milestone, the label is offering up some special projects, from the 20th Anniversary edition of J Dilla’s ‘Welcome 2 Detroit’, through David Bowie tribute album ‘Modern Love’, to a special new ‘Worldwide’ compilation from old friend Gilles Peterson.
