Only someone with Jerome Sydenham's unique background could have founded a record label as innovative as Ibadan Recordings. He was born and raised in Ibadan, Nigeria to an English father and Jamaican mother and schooled in his teens in England before emigrating to New York City in the early 80's. Sydenham's work today is largely influenced by the cultural diversity of his upbringing and has echoes of a musical history that spans indigenous African and contemporary western music.

One of the many artists who benefited from Sydenham's artistic direction was New Jersey based Kerri Chandler. In 1991, Sydenham was part of the A&R team that signed Chandler's debut single "SuperLover/Get it Off", to Atlantic Records and the rest is house music history. Chandler is now acknowledged as one of the original creators of the deep house sound and his bass lines are legendary.

Sydenham and Chandler's ambitions fused creatively with the inception of the Ibadan imprint six years ago. Saturday represents the culmination of their shared experience as music makers, party animals and fathers. Sydenham takes artistic control of the repertoire with an album that reflects the breadth of his musical interests. Chandler acts as a flawless technician, refining and making sense of a wide range of ideas. The record, a well rounded full length, has something for everyone. It combines simple, deep, electronic tracks (Rising the Sun and Winter’s Blessing) with elegant acoustic arrangements (Aro and Deconstructed House). Congolese vocalist Alain Nkosi Konda joins Cameroonian guitarist Dominique Kanza on the mammoth "Ko Ko" produced by Sydenham and Dennis Ferrer of Sfere Records. Sydenham and Ferrer follow up with multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Jania on "Deconstructed House", a funky, Brazillian hybrid of influences. Saturday also benefits from a significant input by local New York jazz luminaries. Guests include bassist Tarus Mateen and keyboard player Brian Mitchell.

Sean McCabe & Mr. V – It Can Be

It could be on the East, it could be on the West; it could be in Europe, or it could be in Asia. Today, house music is a global phenomenon that has connected with all different kinds of people from different backgrounds, bringing so many shades of music into one form of expression.

With spoken words performed by Mr. V, “It Can Be” encapsulates what it is that defines house music in current times. Riding over McCabe’s trademark dubby sound, Sean takes each mix in slightly different directions with the deeper atmospheric East Mix or the classic hard-kick swinging West Mix. Whichever way you go, both mixes are designed with the sole purpose of getting bodies moving.

Growing up in the 1980's in New York City, the open-minded Mr. V was heavily influenced by House, Hip-Hop, Latin, Garage and Disco classics, Rhythm & Blues and Jazz. As a result his sound is like taking a trip back in time to dance music's golden age.

In his own words, “it didn't matter what race or sexual orientation you came from because dance music was all about embracing our differences and creating a homogeneous vibe. The music was built heavily on lots of heart and soul. DJs played whatever it took to get the party going and the music was never predictable.”

It is with this classic spirit and enthusiasm that Mr. V targets today's dance music world.

Founded in 1996 by Peter Adarkwah, Barely Breaking Even (BBE Music) started life as a London club night, taking its name from the eponymous Disco record by the Universal Robot Band.

The label grew from the vibrant early 90's club scene with its first release, Stop & Listen compiled by Dr Bob Jones in 1996, opening the door to iconic series' such as All Back To Mine & Late Nite Tales.

A tonne of releases followed, ranging from Disco to Funk, Jazz to House. In the year 2000, the label celebrated Masters at Work's 10th Anniversary with a mighty box set that featured near 80 tracks.

A year later BBE Music spawned the Beat Generation Series of artist albums, notably introducing J Dilla (Welcome 2 Detroit) & a young Will.I.Am's first solo outing, alongside DJ Jazzy Jeff, Madlib & DJ Spinna, all of whom contributed to this seminal set of long players.

A quarter of a century and well over 500 titles later, having worked with Mark Ronson, Roy Ayers, Questlove, Hugh Masekela, DJ Premier, Dimitri from Paris, Joey Negro, Kon, RZA, Laurent Garnier, Black Coffee, DJ Shadow, David Rodigan and John Morales among many others, BBE Music looks to the future, celebrating its rich heritage while continuing to release a bounty of fresh titles.

The label’s most recent projects include an expansive reissue series from pioneering Nigerian label Tabansi, new imprint ‘Batakari’ in association with Boddhi Satva and the critically acclaimed ‘J Jazz’ Japanese Jazz multi-album project, not to mention the recent landmark 500th label release: a brand new version of 'Barely Breaking Even', featuring Leroy Burgess, Patrick Adams and Louie Vega.

In 2021 BBE Music is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
