Originally from France, this globetrotter has started building a name for himself in Montreal, Canada, and now Brussels, as he dives deeper into the electronic scene. His warm and enticing sound caught our attention and resulted in the Insane About It EP. A step out of our comfort zone at Heroic, going deeper than we ever have before. P.O.G! delivers a warm and uplifting house banger, with vocals throughout and the catchiest hook. Then we go one deeper with Jack Zwarts, with driving deep house at it’s finest - made for the dance floors. Rescued from relative obscurity by DJ Amir’s 180 Proof Records, BBE is delighted to present a gem from the tiny yet highly influential catalogue of Strata Records. Preceding New York’s Strata East, Detroit’s original Strata label issued only a handful of underground titles in the early 70’s, making it a ‘holy grail’ imprint among jazz lovers and record collectors the world over.
Released by Strata in 1974, Bert Myrick’s ‘Live ‘n Well’ was originally recorded by Strata founder and former Blue Note artist Kenny Cox at a concert which took place almost a decade previously, at the student union of the University Of Michigan back in 1965. Led by drummer Bert Myrick, the album highlights a quintet of highly talented players at the height of their powers. Featuring Will Austin on bass, Kenny Cox on piano and Ronnie Fields on tenor sax, the performance also stars George Bohanon, a now- legendary player who spent 7 years with Motown Records as lead trombonist before being named "Most Valuable Player". by the National Association of Recording Arts and Sciences.
Probably best known for the iconic 14 minute epic “Scorpio’s Child” (composed by Strata owner Kenny Cox), ‘Live ‘n Well’ captures tour de force performances from a collection of Detroit’s finest musicians, destined to go their separate ways soon after the recording was completed. Legend has it that Bert Myrick was inspired to pursue his passion for the drums by friend and mentor Elvin Jones (the drummer on John Coltrane’s classic ‘A Love Supreme’), who would open windows at his shows so that Bert and his friends could enter without paying. This kind of heavyweight tutelage would certainly explain Myrick’s impeccable, highly expressive playing on ‘Live ‘n Well’. Remembered fondly for his powerful hands and gentle demeanor, Bert Myrick passed away in 2010 at the age of 80.

Sweden’s favourite house label Local Talk return with a new LP compiled by one of the imprints most beloved artists Crackazat, and he has been given special permission remix and rework a selection of label's back catalogue for their edit's series.

Previous artists who have compiled a reworks album for the series include HNNY, Jacques Renault plus Kyodai, and this is perhaps one of the best yet.

Ben Jacobs better known to music fans as Crackazat, is a young talent originally from Bristol in the UK. Early in his career he was the official warm up act for Floating Points and he shares a similar sound fusing upbeat jazzy chords with house shuffling percussion.

Local Talk have become synonymous with breaking new talent such as HNNY that later goes onto achieve big things, and Crackazat is one such artist who has used the label as a spring board to kick start an accomplished career.

Crackazat has now featured tracks and remixes on other labels including Josh Wink's Ovum, Joey Negro's Z Records and Derrick Carter’s Classic. Early in his career he also released on the infamous Future Boogie, and a number of his Local Talk tracks have been licenced to prestigious compilations compiled by brands like Defected.

Featuring everyone from Terrence Parker to Soulphiction, the Local Talk back catalogue has original music from many of house music’s greatest artists who sit alongside fresh talent such as Jaxx Madicine and Marcel Lune.

Choosing tracks that he either loves of feels he can improve with a bit of careful editing, Crackazat has spent time hand picking a selection of tracks that showcase the Local Talk back catalogue in all its dazzling glory.

For those already familiar with some of the original versions on this release, it’s a fantastic chance to rediscover a classic in a revised format, and for those new to the label prepare to hear some of the best house music out there with strong influences from other genres such as jazz, funk and soul.

JJ’s groove is an homage to Montreal, which I’ve called home for the last 8 years. The boogie, Brazilian funk, and Afrobeat that you hear up and down Boulevard St. Laurent were big influences on the track - as was the overall joie de vivre of the city. 

As you might guess from the meek lyrical content and my conspicuous accent, this is one of the first times I’ve attempted to write a song in French. That being said, I felt it would be a good way to pay tribute to the city and culture that have given me so much.

‘Earthly Delights’ is a forgotten 1978 free-jazz masterpiece by bass player, composer and improviser David Wertman, alongside his Sun Ensemble.

Born in 1952 and raised in Queens NY, Wertman’s distinctive upright playing style was entirely self-taught. He cut his teeth in the notorious New York Jazz lofts, jamming for hours and hours with the likes of Billy Bang, Arthur Blythe, Marion Brown, Steve Reid, Dave Pike, William Parker, Brandon Ross and Charles Tyler to name but a few.

‘Earthly Delights’ is the first recording by the Sun Ensemble band and features the original line-up of Greg Wall (Baritone Saxophone), Jay Conway (Drums), John Sprague Jr. (Flute and Percussion), David Swerdlove (Soprano/Alto Saxophone), and John Zieman (Synthesizer). John Sprague Jr. financed and produced the album, releasing it on his own label Sweet Earth Records, a short-lived but bountiful imprint, perhaps best known for issuing Sun Ra And His Arkestra’s 1979 album “The Other Side Of The Sun”.

‘Earthly Delights’ is perhaps best described as loosely composed, or highly improvised, depending on where you stand on such subjective matters. Containing just 4 compositions, ‘Earthly Delights’ explores man’s relationship with nature; at times subtle and delicate, at times wide and sweeping in its gestures. The record’s spiritual message is conveyed by heartfelt, virtuoso performances from all six players, drifting together seamlessly from one sonic wave to the next.

BBE Music present ‘Hepnotherapy’, a 2017 album by London swing group The Hep Chaps.

The Hep Chaps were founded in 1996 after David Howarth and John Wallace met up in the West End of London performing in the stage musical Good Rockin Tonight. They found a musical empathy in the sound of the 30s and 40s and formed a duo specialising in self-penned works with zany lyrics and punchy swing rhythms. In 2005 they formed a six-piece group.

Mingling well-known swing tunes from the 30s & 40s with their own originals in the same classic style this band is one of the most fun & accessible dance bands around.

The band have performed at swing dance clubs, festivals, parties & balls all over the UK and in Europe with special appearances at London’s famous 100 Club, The Jitterbug Ball, The Rhythm Riot & The Swing Cats Ball as well as at Copenhagen’s famous Jazzhouse.

The Hep Chaps - What Is This Thing Called Love

1977, Paris France. Two brothers freshly arrived from Casamance, the Senegalese ‘Florida’, are living  the tough immigrant experience.  

Their plan: becoming pop stars. A challenge so ambitious  it sounds like science fiction at the time: Bob Marley, Fela Kuti and a handful of others artists have started making waves in the Western World , but the rise of the Pan-African sound is still at an early stage. The Touré brothers have formed a band, written some songs, and start frequently playing their music live, to great effect, at an underground theatre called the Dunois in the 13th Parisian district. 

A legendary 40-year career will follow:  16 albums released, millions of records sold, numerous world tours, awards and collabs with the likes of Manu Dibango, Talking Heads, Carlos Santana, Bill Laswell, Alpha Blondy, Bernie Worrel … 

Released in 1979, self-financed by loans from friends and allies, Mandinka Dong - The Mandinke Dance - is the genesis of Touré Kunda, the cornerstone of the band’s unique sound, at the crossroads of Disco, Funk, Pop, Reggae, Portuguese, Guinean, Cuban, Zairean, Mandinke and Soninke music.

It is an honour for Secousse and Hot Mule Records to present a complete reissue of Mandinka Dong. Faithfully restored and remastered, it will be available from the 16th September in both digital and physical formats (gatefold vinyl illustrated with photos from the artists’ archives and liner notes by Frank Tenaille, the band’s official biographer).

What brought us here at this moment? Patience...we will feel...

Solar disk, gradually passing one after another part of the plateu, reflected in turn from all surfaces and sublimate energy what drives ancient mechanisms - shadows become longer...A sense of presence...
Bright flashes, permeating retina and project mysterious space, shining with vibrant colors...The inner vision distinguishes silhouettes gradually appearing and filling by lots of details...After a certain moments, everything returns to square one and it becomes clear that the people around are various representatives of the autochthonous tribes, living in the territories of Ecuador, who have gathered here and now, just like us, to hear this mixtale...

Felipe Granda will lead us by secret trail through various regions of the country - from the mountains, through the jungle to the coast and along the way we will hear and get to know various rhythmic structures that so brightly reveal the inexplicable flavor of Ecuador!

Founded in 1996 by Peter Adarkwah, Barely Breaking Even (BBE Music) started life as a London club night, taking its name from the eponymous Disco record by the Universal Robot Band.

The label grew from the vibrant early 90's club scene with its first release, Stop & Listen compiled by Dr Bob Jones in 1996, opening the door to iconic series' such as All Back To Mine & Late Nite Tales.

A tonne of releases followed, ranging from Disco to Funk, Jazz to House. In the year 2000, the label celebrated Masters at Work's 10th Anniversary with a mighty box set that featured near 80 tracks.

A year later BBE Music spawned the Beat Generation Series of artist albums, notably introducing J Dilla (Welcome 2 Detroit) & a young Will.I.Am's first solo outing, alongside DJ Jazzy Jeff, Madlib & DJ Spinna, all of whom contributed to this seminal set of long players.

A quarter of a century and well over 500 titles later, having worked with Mark Ronson, Roy Ayers, Questlove, Hugh Masekela, DJ Premier, Dimitri from Paris, Joey Negro, Kon, RZA, Laurent Garnier, Black Coffee, DJ Shadow, David Rodigan and John Morales among many others, BBE Music looks to the future, celebrating its rich heritage while continuing to release a bounty of fresh titles.

The label’s most recent projects include an expansive reissue series from pioneering Nigerian label Tabansi, new imprint ‘Batakari’ in association with Boddhi Satva and the critically acclaimed ‘J Jazz’ Japanese Jazz multi-album project, not to mention the recent landmark 500th label release: a brand new version of 'Barely Breaking Even', featuring Leroy Burgess, Patrick Adams and Louie Vega.

In 2021 BBE Music is celebrating its 25th anniversary. To mark this milestone, the label is offering up some special projects, from the 20th Anniversary edition of J Dilla’s ‘Welcome 2 Detroit’, through David Bowie tribute album ‘Modern Love’, to a special new ‘Worldwide’ compilation from old friend Gilles Peterson.
