2013 has set out to be the year of the funk on Breakbeat Paradise Recordings – and to establish that we’ve invited producer and multi-instrumentalist Michael DeVellis from New York, who’s brought along 4 sizzling jams, that are all about the funk!

Michael DeVellis is no stanger to BBP as he featured on BadboE’s new album Pump Up The Funk, where he made instrumental contributions on the horns, flute, keys and synth on several jams on the album.

On this EP Mr. DeVellis has gone though the crates himself and picked some acapellas, which he’s mashed into his original funk productions. This EP even features the very first joint that BadboE and Michael DeVellis did back in 2009, when things were all about the funk – and nothing but the funk!

A.	The EP kicks off with the big 7 and a half-minute production High Freedom, which takes elements of Jurassic Five and Talib Kweli and takes it into Michael DeVellis’ world of funk. The song takes us though several stages of beats and breaks, all designed to entertain us with the funk

B.	The second cut on the EP gives us a small glance back into the early era of Nu Funk. Over and Under was the very first track Michael DeVellis and BadboE did together and it settled a great teamwork between the two, which has continued on until this day. With some big bad beats and the raw funk elements of Michael DeVellis is how it all begun.

C. Ryder Classic is the original jam that was reworked as the last track on BadboE’s album called Work It Out. On BBP we thought the classic 70s funk vibes of the original, had just the right attitude we wanted for this EP. Just straight up funky music from start to finish.

D.	The final jam on the EP is the energetic Turtle Love, which takes little elements from the godfather of funk himself, and mashed it with pieces from Daft Punk, The Beastie Boys, and the Turtle Island String Quartet. It’s all slammed into Michael DeVellis funky blender and out comes a cocktail of fresh funky vibes.

Michael DeVellis is a multi-talented artist, and here at BBP we are just proud that we had him make the funk once again…

Last seen lurking on the label’s cracking Pump Up The Funk collection, Devellis returns with his first full EP in a long, long time. Littered with samples and very cool grooves, the whole EP is a doozy but here’s a few more details in case you’re undecided; “High Freedom” is a summer-stunned block rocker with more sneaky hip-hop vox than a Compton recording booth. “Over & Under”, meanwhile, takes a more laid back jazzier approach with a rap that doesn’t sound too far away from Method Man. “Ryder Classic” takes us to a more authentic early 70s funk club and makes us swing until we’re dazzled and dizzy while “Turtle Love” blends the Beasties with Daft Punk and whole series of lush horns. Ace.

It has been 10 years since Fort Knox Five released their first singles, and this past decade has proven very fruitful for the funky foursome. 2003 saw the launch of both Fort Knox Five and their seminal Fort Knox Recordings imprint. To celebrate this milestone, Fort Knox Five have selected 15 of their favorite original tracks from the entire decade.

Fort Knox Five has had the pleasure of collaborating with some incredible vocalists who are well represented on this collection. Mustafa Akbar of Thunderball and Nappy Riddem is featured on several tracks, as are Rootz and Zeebo of See-I and Thievery Corporation. The Godfather of Electro Funk himself, Afrika Bambaataa is featured on two tracks. Asheru, best known for his Boondocks theme song is on the opening track. Thievery Corporation’s dancehall voice, Sleepy Wonder as well as DC’s own DIY legend Ian Svenonius are both featured. The list continues with former US3 front-man and prolific artist Akil Dasan and the Zulu Nation’s King Kamonzi. Rounding out the list of featured vocalists is Beta-G, on loan from the US Department of Bhangra.

This body of music not only spans 10 years of Fort Knox Five in the studio, but also live performances and dj appearances worldwide. This music has been performed and played for countless thousands of fans around the globe. These tunes have also been heard in such great movies as The Cove (2010 Academy Award Winner), Stand Up Guys and You Again as well as TV shows like The Fringe. No stranger to the wide world of video games, Fort Knox Five songs have appeared on Need For Speed: Shift, Skate It, NBA Live 10, Test Drive Unlimited 2, Dirt 3, Sims and others.

10 Years of Fort Knox Five shows the music diversity of the group with one foot firmly planted in funk. Reggae and dub can be heard clearly alongside hip-hop. The group is not afraid to break boundaries and delve into rock, swing and even bhangra in their musical explorations. This collection of music represents the last decade of Fort Knox Five’s musical growth and development.

Founded by Boe Pedersen (Dj BadboE) in Denmark, and now based in Florida. The label originates from the music website Breakbeat Paradise that has been running since 1996. Breakbeat Paradise is dedicated to breakers and electronic musicians within the style of music that we can loosely term as breakbeat. Developing and improving this website over the last 10 years to include everything from visitor music sharing, annual breakbeat contests, samplekits and discussion forum. We felt that going into digital music distribution would be a natural next step.

The music material on the Breakbeat Paradise website has over 1000 pieces of music. Breakbeat Paradise Recordings will  pick up the very best  “cream of the crop”, artists  and tunes and release them as digital downloads through Breakbeat Paradise Recordings  collaborative partners . We found digital distribution would match perfect with our cutting-edge funky breakbeat music and the fastest way from  the streets – to the listener and dancefloor!

With only exclusive vinyl and digital releases , we are always focused on the most important thing for us – the music! 

The music will span from traditional nu funk and funky breaks to more dancefloor oriented ghetto funk,  future funk and big beat as well as hip hop with a glitch and the more mellow side of the drum ‘n’ bass and nu breaks. The sound of Breakbeat Paradise is driven by an emphatic beat that is intended to form a leitmotif between the releases.

Even though releases from Breakbeat Paradise will be coming from different artists, we always uniform a sound by focusing within the genres of breakbeat.  Collaborators and musicians work close together on our label and we are always ensuring a brand of selective “state of the art“, quality and sound .

We will devote ourselves to deliver the phattest, funkiest and the biggest grooves to be found out there...
