We are delighted to present a mix from the groove dealer himself, Portugal-based DJ and producer VIL for number 86. Starting off under the Moniker "Sinner", VIL made his debut in the electronic music scene in 2008, playing Drum N' Bass, UK Garage and Dubstep. Then in 2013 he kickstarted his current VIL project, focused on techno, breaks, electro and house, which was followed by a string of releases on labels like Lewis Fautzi's "Faut Section" as well as Damon Wild's Synewave New York. VIL's set-building ability as well as his refined taste and unmistakable sound have made him a regular at clubs and festivals all around his home country. Then in 2018, VIL teamed up with fellow artists Temudo and menosdois to create HAYES, a label focused on putting out quality releases showcasing the distinct sound of their artists. The platform has been wildly successful with multiple releases to date, garnering support from some of the biggest names in the scene. Enjoy!

Coming up in the music scene of Kansas City and currently residing in Detroit, Uun developed his interest in the fringes of sound as a guitarist in multiple bands before turning his focus to techno in 2012. Both his early work as a band member and his current output as a techno performer share a common exploration of darkness both in mood and in execution. Hard Wax described Uun's sound as a "straight-ahead techno juggernaut."

Although he has been producing and performing since 2012, Uun’s profile has recently risen substantially, with releases on Mord, Soma, and Modularz. Resident Advisor referred to this ability to work within many different imprints and styles as “quietly infiltrating techno”, and compared his music to the latter days of the Sandwell District. As well as releasing on many noteworthy labels, he also has his own imprint to showcase the scope of his productions. Titled Ego Death, the label explores themes of existentialism, duality, and what it means to be an artist in the modern era. Now on its fifth vinyl release, each strives to create a unique and varied atmosphere.

His live performance is an extension of hard-working music-first ethos. In this format, Uun constructs thousands of studio hours into a powerful contained experience. Each outing can greatly differ as new elements are always added. He has brought this unique approach to underground events all over the USA, as well as choice bookings in Europe at Tresor, Griessmuehle, Gegen, as well as Khidi in Tbilisi. Uun’s steady output of productions have long been included in many substantial dj sets, with the most noteworthy being both Blawan and Luke Slater’s mixes for BBC Essentials.

I wanted to do something different for this night, so I experimented with a new approach to my preparation, organising playlists with tracks by what kind of sound design and moods they contain, and putting them within folders that indicated the general intensity in order to slowly ramp up the tension. This groundwork allowed me to prepare an arc for a deep set where I could make long layered mixes while maintaining the groove, speed and improvisation I consider to be recognizable features of when I DJ in a club.

Although this set also sustains a steady groove and flow, it is still a departure from my usual, more instinctive way of playing, where I tend to switch more impulsively between styles and themes, mixing tracks that have pronounced rhythmic elements with tracks that have very memorable basslines and hooks, especially from earlier decades, call it old school, 90s, 00s, retro or outdated if you want. I do this in order to keep a sense of playfulness and unpredictability going (fu n）with selections that have a distinct character.

This set was more about consistency, atmosphere and subtle transitions. The aim was to have the music slowly progress over the course of the set but without it becoming a static affair. This is why I completely avoid looping tracks, as I want their sounds to continuously evolve, and the phrasing in their structure to be continuously accentuated throughout the mix. 

It might not sound quite like what you would expect from a Comrade Winston DJ set, but I actually had a lot of fun constantly keeping two tracks in the mix while preparing for the third to take over, slowly stacking upon the current mood instead of rapidly switching between different ones. Prefering not to rely on the element of surprise but rather slowly reach a boiling point and to enjoy the ride.

Focused on a hypnotic base, reference to mental connections and dissipated voices that alternate gradually or without warning, between refined rhythms and sequenced environments, invigorating physical energy consistency, and captivating until the end.

The piece itself is a one-way trip in abstract form. The interpretation will be defined by the listener's memory. 
But, what is the memory? 

Scrambled data, stored sequences of impulses in our brain. These scattered fragments are called upon by sensory stimuli and compiled by millions of neuron cells firing impulses to recreate past moments. These rememberings are self-contained. Memories are your own, are unique, and are apparent only to whoever is making them. 

However, the many variations in recollecting a concrete moment form a sort of objective memory for multiple individuals shared collectively. Places, tastes, events,  relived through memories recalled at will or by emotional responses, shared between us are occurred facts.
The past is shaping what we become, and what we belong to.

So, we ask you now, what do you want to memorize?? 
Your future is being compiled and executed.
