Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The year was 1986. The Ski Patrol gang was ready for action, choreographing a dance that was in no way cocaine related. Needless to say, Mapa and The Bearded Man were two of the bright young stars of the ski patrol crew. They hadn’t saved any lives, but damn — they looked great in their red jumpsuits! More importantly, they were incredibly arrogant, which is really all that matters in the world of ski patrolling for a living. During one of their many late night ski patrol jacuzzi parties, Mapa had the bright idea to take pool chairs from around the big hot tub at the lodge and throw them into the water. The depth was perfect. You could lay on the deck chairs in the heated pool with just your head out of the water. It was perfect timing, as coincidentally the Geminid meteor shower was out in full force that night. The two sat in the tub, with 5 of their biggest fans and groupies joining them at their side. Icicles were forming on their exposed heads and beards but they didn’t mind. It was some of the most epic stargazing ever. It reminded The Bearded Man of the time he was in Greenland with Jus Jack — a similar experience, but this was still somehow uniquely special.

The City of Angels… To quote The Big Lebowski, The Bearded Man didn’t quite find it to be that exactly. From Skid Row to South Central, there’s no shortage of oddball characters in Los Angeles. Of course, it’s a well known fact that the weirdest weirdos of all live in Beverly Hills — there’s no limit to the absurd amount of maniacs, degenerates, freaks and deranged individuals out there, but still, there’s a certain inescapable charm that wafts in amidst the fragrant smells of street urine. Yes, the streets may be cracked, the infrastructure may be in shambles, but, BUT! But. Where else can The Bearded Man blast a jam like this one 24/7/365 and it’s always appropriate? For those who love music and the beach side of life, the City of Angels will always be where it’s at.

There was a period in the 80s when The Bearded Man was never seen without his trusty keytar around his neck. It had sequins, it was bright pink, and it had a few stickers on it that ABBA once gave him backstage. With his Jerry Curl hair and his finely groomed facial hair, he was quite the catch back then. He’d walk onto the city bus, and people would look at him like “Daaaamnnn… This guy doesn’t ride the city bus because he has to. He rides it because he *wants* to.” Yep, he always took the bus when he went to record with the one-and-only Barry White. Halfway through the ride, he’d plug in his mini amp and start jamming out trumpet solos on his keyboard. It was easily one of the coolest things that’s ever happened. But it was before YouTube, so sadly most of us will never know about it.

Inventing a teleportation machine wasn’t the *easiest* thing The Bearded Man has ever done. He’ll be the first to tell you that it was totally worth it, but not for the reasons you’d expect. At first, he built it so that he could travel anywhere in the world without jet-lag. Then he got bored. Shortly thereafter, he used it to bring people to him instead, and for the occasional magic trick. Someone would say: “I wish you could be here somehow!” and boom! He’d be there. Instantly. But you know, after a while, the novelty lost its charm. The Bearded Man instead started using it to teleport beer to him from the fridge to his couch. It’s kind of sad, but the human race will do anything to save even a couple lousy seconds.
