Sobek is the Khemitian crocodile master of strength, extreme power, Nile River, water, warfare, strategy, fertility and protection. His strength quickly led him to the position of head of ancient Khemit armies, making him the protector of the Rulers of Khemit.

Sobek was represented as either a giant crocodile or as a man with a muscular human body and a crocodile head. Sobek often wears a crown that Ra - The Light - gave him after he had achieved many military conquests.

In ancient Khemit, Sobek was to be responsible for the flooding of the Nile. This belief was based on the idea that the crocodile, as a marine animal, had the ability to plunge into the Nile, strong enough to cause flooding over its entire length.

Sobek was the master of the Nile who brought fertility to the land. As the “Lord of the Waters” he was thought to have risen from the primeval waters of Nun to create the world and made the Nile from his sweat.

Sobek is known to give martial training that the crocodile Master gave to young Horus. It is believed that this martial training had been quite effective, as Horus became an adult and defeated Darkness after all.

The strength, speed and ferocity of the crocodile was thought to be symbolic of the power of the Ruler of ancient Khemit. He was also one of ancient Khemit's doctor master. A sick person would go to his temple at Kom Ombo, located 30 miles North of Aswan, seeking healing.

This temple was once the sanctuary for a large number of crocodiles, and the center of Sobek’s followers. The temple features unique characteristics like the “twin design” as the southern hall was dedicated to Sobek and the northern hall of the temple was dedicated to the falcon god Haroeris. This separation is even more atypical when you take the perfect symmetry a long the main axis in consideration. Both parts of the temple have its own entrance, halls, and chapels. Walls in one section of the temples are decorated with the images of surgical instruments. The images of scalpels, pincers, forceps, and other medical tools show that the ancient Khemitians were skilled medical professionals.

Excavations of crocodile sarcophagi and mummies are not uncommon from the surrounding area. Step back in time as you walk the path of those ancient Khemitains who appreciated and feared the crocodile in honor of the crocodile Master, Sobek.

For the 14th Pathways we welcome Matt Drake.

Drawing inspiration from the astral arpeggios of 70s Krautrock, ragged Balearic vagabond synth pop of the 80s and proto-rave machine rhythms of the 90s he has dedicated his life to music. 

Being a core part of New Zealand's underground dance music scene since the early 90s - touring clubs, festivals and events across the land, a founding member of Nurture Recordings, running Crucial Records on Auckland's High Street, hosting the decade long Slipstream radio on George FM, running club nights such as Beatstreet, and is a creative director at Lo-Fi Productions who have been creating epic boutique music experiences with the very best house and techno artists from Aotearoa and from across the globe.

Second time joining the Hot Situations family alongside some good friends (Salimbeni, Paulo PG) and some favorite artists of mine (Mimi Love, Deer Jade, Franca).

For me every set is as much a discovery exercise as it is for the audience, and so I always try to introduce something different or unexpected. This time, I thought I would play a bit more of a high tempo set and prep the stage for Jade to take over.

Friends and fam, here is my closing set from Winter Wayward Land on Dec 21, 2023, recorded live at F8 nightclub in San Francisco. This was a big year for Wayward, with some live performances, some exciting B2B sessions, and a lot of talent from across our community. We certainly ended it with a bang! Hope this set gives you a little end-of-year boost to help carry you into 2024!

Huge shoutouts to my guest DJs WHOO!SHT, Shalman, and Black Panda for laying down some solid sets, and to all the amazing friends who came and shared their energy and vibes. We rocked the back room from the start right up until the very end!
