When in the chronicle of wasted time
I see descriptions of the fairest wights,
And beauty making beautiful old rhyme,
In praise of ladies dead and lovely knights,
Then, in the blazon of sweet beauty's best,
Of hand, of foot, of lip, of eye, of brow,
I see their antique pen would have express'd
Even such a beauty as you master now.
So all their praises are but prophecies
Of this our time, all you prefiguring;
And, for they look'd but with divining eyes,
They had not skill enough your worth to sing:

For we, which now behold these present days,
Have eyes to wonder, but lack tongues to praise.

Descriptions Of The Fairest Wights

Funny how hard it is to recall details of what seemed at the time the most important permanent parts of your life..like a first love or relationship. Seems flashes of images remain but not the whole package

Les grandes villes me vendaient leurs promesses en carton,
Que je photographiais avec une sorte de fièvre .
On croit que le bonheur se cache dans ce qui brille,
Dans l’éclat du décor, dans le doux corps des filles.
On achète, on possède mais on devient aigri.
À force de chercher, le désir s’est enfui.
J’ai brûlé des amours à durée limitée,
Des promesses d’un jour destinées à sombrer,
Rêvant de pas errants qui deviendraient chemin
Mais on repartait vite, chacun son lendemain.
Dans une maison blanche ouverte sur la mer,
Avec des volets bleus battant au rythme des prières.
J’ai cru trouver l’amour, le nid qui va avec,
Une vue sur l’océan, un été un peu sec.
On croit que le bonheur se cache dans ce qui brille
Dans l’éclat du décor, dans le doux corps des filles.
On achète, on possède mais on devient aigri.
À force de chercher, le désir s’est enfui.
Aujourd’hui je regarde les jours passer lentement,
Je n’attends plus vraiment des sentiments parfaits,
Oubliés mes départs, mes brusques revirements,
J’apprends à rester là, et je m’en satisfais.
