MARSH LONG describes herself as a bright kaleidoscope of colours yet frequents the city’s best electronic music institutions with her delicate version of dark techno. She’s passionate about building a storyline and incorporating different concepts into every set, while remaining a master of feeding off a dancefloors’ energy, despite only being in the circuit for over a year.

Beats by Beat #25: Tangerine Mix and Interview

The next Beats by Beat mix comes from Brisbane-based, multi-disciplinary artist, Shannon Mavrik with a feature of a new debut release from his latest project, Dociyle. Dociyle has come from a love of sci-fi film and games scores, meeting techno, garage, bass and electronic music. Mavrik has created a beautiful interstellar, cinematic video experience to go along with this, but for now, listen back to an ambient dance curation with analogue intros, hypnotic pads and field recordings creating something very much out of this world. Many labels strive for the cutting edge, but few pull it off. Melbourne’s Music Company is only a year – or eight releases – old but is quickly establishing itself as a foremost publisher of the freshest sounds from Australia’s constellation of artists making ambient, experimental and otherwise avant-garde music.

The label’s founders Brad Shawyer and Lauren Mitchell have thus far built a discography ranging from single-instrument live recordings to the most inventive forms of ‘computer music’ you’ll hear. Beats by Beat #28: Music Company Mix and Interview

It’s difficult to nail down how to perfectly describe the outer-worldly, down-to-earth, wholesome but turbo essence that is Stephanie, aka WISER. While her tattooed-covered head and face bearing metal that accompany her darker sound may make WISER come across as someone more tough and intimidating, Stephanie is actually a gentle softie at heart whose motto is to spread kindness and “be good - If not, don’t get caught.”
 
She’s her own unique breed of human, using her magical powers to create endless projects and musical endeavours, while producing some of the most delicate, energetic and tear-jerking tunes being released in the world, not just Down Under.
 
She’s played festivals and parties up and down the East Coast, with releases on some of the industry’s finest labels, including Ugenious, Mavic Music, Oxytech Records, Higher Recordings, Bubblejam and Revolver Upstairs Records, with many more in the pipeline. 
 
She’s inspired by the raw energy and emotion of harder music genres, while infusing her trademark warmth. Her intricately and meticulously curated style has seen her billed alongside PleasureKraft, Kolsch, Patrice Baumel, Township Rebellion, Spektre, Pik & Dan, Rebuke and many more.
 
Aside from her favourite project DAZED HDT (Hard Dance Therapy), WISER has hosted sessions at Yarra Youth Services’ DJ Skills, helped launch Puppy Love Tattoo, released her first music video last year under Growing Pains, and just realised on Revolver Records’ label with Restless/Again and well as on Ugenius. We got the chance to interview WISER and have her put together a very epic mix for the Beats by Beat Series.

Beats by Beat #29: WISER Mix

The latest offering on Nina Las Vegas’s NLV Records is Strict Face, aka Jon, who is an absolute expert of crafting percussive, UK-inspired tracks that make you itch for the sweaty dance floor. 

From FBi Radio to Boiler Room, Strict Face has frequented both the streams and airwaves for years now with off-beats and rhythms that fall well-beyond the 4x4 patterns of traditional electronic music, making his tunes thoroughly entertaining.

Beats by Beat #30: Strict Face Mix

Poetry and “fucked up club music” don’t usually go together, but that’s exactly how @jobfit describe some of their recent music. 

It’s 10/10 good to have Jobfit contribute to the series, not just because the duo add something unique and high quality to Australia’s electronic music scene, but because their contribution marks a small milestone for us: born, and operating primarily, in Sydney, Jobfit’s is the first contribution by a non-Melbourne artist or group.

@Toniyotzi sifted through her collection of 2021 releases to mix for us her dance music favourites of the year. The result is a seamless blend of broken beat techno and bass music, underwritten with that distinctive UK sound she has been known to blast on sound systems across Australia.

@FROCKUP is a colourful collective and platform created by three great friends, Ivy, Josh, Sean and James, born out of one of the city’s longest lockdowns as a way to not only kill time, but create a space for people to convey their experiences through a variety of mediums. Horatio Luna, the brilliant alias of Henry Hicks, has been perfecting his delicate craft of smooth and groovy bass since he was 14. He’s an avid fan of fusing vibes and takes inspiration from all kinds of different house and dance-floor orientated sounds. Some of these rich flavours include rare groove, left-field, spiritual jazz, funk, D&B, reggae, Latin jazz as well as a hint of psychedelic.

Their raw and industrial sound with cosmic synths and breakbeats have earned them well-deserved praise across the nation.

If we’re talking music, her personality is eclectic and her history is diversely coloured. But Carolyn Schofield, known to Australia’s music industry as Fia Fiell, has developed a reputation for creating and playing primarily improvised experimental electronic music. We could call it “ambient”, but that would be – as often is with generic labels – an oversimplification.

Beats by Beat #9: Fia Fiell

Those familiar with Australia’s house and techno scene will know there’s been, in recent years, a resurgence in the popularity of breakbeat genres like drum and bass and jungle. There are a few strong purveyors of the broken rhythm sound here in Melbourne, and not many more so than Luke O’Higgins, aka Tamen. Christened as a club DJ at only 16, he’s played shows across Europe, Asia and Australia and has been a key player in multiple scenes.

Beats by Beat #10: Tamen

For the last couple of years, the largely anonymous producer and DJ, Showerhead, has demonstrated a finely-tuned ear for experimental electronic music. His Beats by Beats mix, however, shows his return to more ubiquitous sounds; it’s a steady and uplifting mix, weaving between tempos, manifesting what he calls a breath of “fresh air” away from his more experimental sound.

For this mix, Pretty Girl has put together a wintery selection with fast, icy broken rhythms and shimmering synths. It’s energetic, sitting between 129 and 133 bpm, comprising lots of ethereal dancefloor bangs that she says, “are almost painful to listen to in our club-less environment. Therefore, I would listen to this mix whilst having a solo dance party in my room, driving fast between lots of tall trees, or to get me out of a coronavirus-induced slump.”

Formerly known as Lotus Moonchild, Foura, aka Amy Inkster, is a staple in Melbourne's dance community. She's a member of The Operatives for a reason – creating original and authentic sounds of nothing other than good vibes. 

We sat down with Foura to learn more about her new track and garage sounds, finding ways to party through lockdown and missing the beloved d-floor at Revs. You can hear our one-on-one with Foura at the end of the mix. Enjoy!

Beats by Beats #16: Foura Mix and Interview

This week Ham sits down with James Benjamin – aka Acid Chess Club – a mixing magician of many music ventures. He dons a variety of hats – working as the Founding Director of collective Crate Mates, runs a music and arts events with 4D mediums through Tesselate, and is the co-founder of Chewin’ the Fat – an event and mental health awareness charity. The event works to create open spaces for the dance community to feel comfortable openly discussing mental health while having a great time, and raise funds for the cause. 

Listen in for a groovy set of eclectic sounds featuring funk, chill-hop, dubs, electro, classic, nu-jazz, 90’s house and blues, where the more you listen, the more you want to move.

Beats by Beat #17: Acid Chess Club Mix and Interview

Fluxx are a Naarm-based collective made up of three beautiful artists and curators, Ruby, Jac and Elle who go by the performance names, RBI, House Mum and Yollks. 

The power trio formed with a vision to champion emerging DJs and producers who identify as people of colour, gender non-conforming, queer and fem. 

When the events of 2020 forced their party to temporary close down, the crew pivoted and coordinated an epic nearly 30-track compilation featuring some of Melbourne's best established and emerging artists.

Beat Magazine shares a moment with them to discuss the compilation, their thoughts on COVID's impact on the electronic scene and what's in store for the team.

Beats by Beat #21: Consulate Mix and Interview

Monique Hillier discovered her eternal love for DJing while living in the Netherlands. Bored at university, she would escape to the decks finding serenity in the form of a good mix. Today, she’s amassed support slots for the likes of DJ Koze, Bradley Zero and Denis Sulta.
 
You may have seen her frequenting the institutional dancefloors of Technoir, Daydreams, Novel and Revolver, getting the hearts of groovers pumping with electro, choppy breaks, hedonistic techno with plenty of pace. She seeks a fast-paced sound with intense energy that allows dancers to get “freaky”.

Inspired by jungle and anything with a really heavy bass, Monique has been recently loving any music that makes her want to jump up and boogie. Today, she’s joining us on Beats by Beat to deliver a very fun, very bass heavy set with a little interview featuring Monfreaq at the end.
