Many labels strive for the cutting edge, but few pull it off. Melbourne’s Music Company is only a year – or eight releases – old but is quickly establishing itself as a foremost publisher of the freshest sounds from Australia’s constellation of artists making ambient, experimental and otherwise avant-garde music.

The label’s founders Brad Shawyer and Lauren Mitchell have thus far built a discography ranging from single-instrument live recordings to the most inventive forms of ‘computer music’ you’ll hear. Wax'o Paradiso have chosen to pair their mix with the Jilya Institute, an organisation supporting Indigenous mental health and suicide prevention, as well as directly funding the education of the next generation of Aboriginal psychologists in so-called Australia.

Since the release of her debut EP ‘Another Place’ on Rotterdam's premiere Nous’klaer record label, upsammy has emerged as one of the most exciting contemporary electronic artists of our time. Known for her boundary-pushing vision of music and sound, upsammy’s string of releases on the likes of AD93, Die Orakel and Dekmantel have manifested into a back catalogue that give the sense and feeling of gallery of artworks. With a background in arts, it’s no surprise that upsammy works from a foundation of unbridled imagination. As is a common theme amongst many of my most admired artists, the power to present works that simultaneously champion both the weird and the functional is at the forefront of upsammy’s sound. It seems to me that the space between is where the magic happens - crystalline electronica, otherworldly ambience, hypnotic glitch and deconstructed club sounds morph to produce upsammy’s unique brand of contemporary, psychedelic idm. Her more recent and first long-player ‘Zoom’ showcases a somewhat softer side - warm crunchy textures, bouncing sub bass and at times-playful melodies are bound together with both quirky and functional rhythms. Zoom bestows upon us a beautiful and engaging collection of sounds which tell the story of both organic and digital realms. I once read a Bandcamp fan describe upsammy’s work as ‘fairytale idm’ and I couldn’t agree more. At the heart of every fairytale is a sense of magic, and everything upsammy does is just that. 

Alongside her productions, upsammy is an expert DJ who crafts brilliantly creative mixes and live sets with laser like precision - dynamic blends of experimental electronics weave between dreamy soundscapes, spacial percussion, psychedelic drum and bass and breaks - you can always expect the unexpected and this mix is no different! upsammy joined me live in the PBS studio on the 14th October 2022.

Tilt Shift sits firmly left of center, a difficult-to-label square peg that unintentionally fails to fit a pigeonhole. Borrowing from the photography term, Tilt Shift refers to two different types of movement, a selective focus with a large depth of field used to control perception. This can be applied to our music policy, tilting the vertical axis resulting in a sharp area of focus without reducing the depth of field. The selective focus that can be achieved by both tilting and shifting movements, It's compelling because the effect is different from that which you may have become accustomed to. This movement is often used to avoid the convergence of parallel lines, or as we have come to think of it, it’s where the lines blur.

I was introduced to Eirwud Mudwasser's music when I came across his LP for Snaker - a vinyl only series run by 5ive. To which he was personally invited to contribute to, and it’s still one of my favourite ones in the series!

His productions and mixes always have an organic and kaleidoscopic feel. Which made more sense, when he shared that his influences are rooted in the music he would listen to as a teenager. 

What I admire most about Eirwud Mudwasser's selections, is that he is not a one-genre dj, and each track holds on to the next one, pulling you through the journey he's chosen to take you on. Enjoy this peaceful trip <3
