Phil Tyler unveils his new track "The In-Between". Based in Berlin, the composer has been a Boom-Bap aficionado since his youth and counts over 100k listeners per month on platforms. A passion he has transformed into skateboarding and sampling in the purest tradition. After working with the legendary band Onyx, the German now shapes his art project by project. It's the very essence of Boom Bap that we find in his single "The In-Between", with a drum line beautifully combined with a piano sample worthy of the 90s.

"Maxtape II" is the long awaited powerhouse sequel to Max I Million´s 2010 release "The Maxtape". It boasts exclusive material, aswell a selection of the Swedish producers prime material released over the past decade and features Hip Hop legends such as C.L. Smooth, Chuck D, Edo G, Bishop Lamont and J-Ro to name a few. 

The major difference is this composition is elegantly put together as a seamless DJ mix by the duo Create & Devastate - and released physically on cassette in association with Insert Tapes!

The story begins 10 years ago when DJ Devastate (R.I.P) founded Counterweight Records, in close collaboration with Max. Enthusiastically, the two started working on the project, which abruptly came to an end with Dev´s tragic passing in 2018. In the years following, Max I Million has carried the torch, putting out work continuously to honor the label´s original vision and keeping the legacy alive. 

When contemplating how to materialize "Maxtape II", Max finally got the idea to bring Dev´s old partner DJ Create on board. He picked up where DJ Devastate left off and the rest is soon-to-be history!

With exquisite cover art design by Jonas Hilmersson, one of the originators of Counterweight Records, this mixtape embodies the expression "Coming full circle". Let the tape roll!

REINCARNATION (FULL TAPE)

I recently started taking bass lessons and my teacher told me to start learning some bass lines of songs I like. This isn't exactly a "cover", but I came up with it jamming along with the original beat and a live version by The Roots. When I decided to recreate it I quite honestly failed - despite how simple the track was.. but I'm digging what I came up with regardless. I basically tried to use the bass as much as possible and tried to come up with variations to the original bass line while still following the general direction of the original beat. I'll try to make this a weekly thing in between my lessons with whatever song I decide to start practicing and learning. Anyways - thanks for taking the time to check it out, I would love to hear what you think. (PS - Any bass players out there definitely reach out, would love to connect)

Inspired By: J Dilla "This Is It / Hall and Oats"

Here's another quick jam to vibe out to from my "Inspired By" sessions - For those who missed last week I am finally starting to play my bass again. My new bass teacher suggested that I start playing along with beats that I like and it became this new thing where I do my best to make a new beat with similar vibe as the original or at least inspired by it. To be honest it's really hard for me to get it to sound like the beat I'm mimicking but so far I'm still learning a lot and have a blast doing it. I'm not much of a piano player or musician so trying to replay the samples is funny to say the least. I'm trying to get better though. This is one of my favorite Pete Rock beats and my version of it doesn't really come close to catching the real special vibe of the original - But I think it has its own vibe now instead of just being a cover or copy. Week 3 of "Inspired By" has arrived.. Slowly but surely starting to feel more comfortable on the bass again. It has truly been exciting and inspiring getting back into playing regularly. This time I made my own version of a Nottz and Roc Marciano song using only my bass and drums / percussion. My friend Jarv (https://soundcloud.com/jarv-5) came through and unexpectedly wrote a quick track to it while we were hanging out. This was recorded right in the room, speakers on, no headphones, etc .. Later when he got back to his spot he ended up sending me the 8 bar scratch outro as well. Been a bit busy lately but managed to throw together another "Inspired By" joint with my bass.  Really rough mix but I think it came out kinda cool! Fun bass line to learn and ended up tuning my entire bass down a half step to hit that low E flat.
