It turns out that there is a 'poetics of chaos.' A chaotic system, far from the popular conception of the inside of a tornado — violent, uncontrollable, never-ending disaster — is constantly seeking stability. It's just like you and me! It wants peace and stability. It will settle into stasis and never get up from the easy chair again, if there are no new conditions introduced into it. A chaotic system starts from a discrete set of variables that determine where it will end up. Thing is, it doesn't reach the same outcome with each iteration. Launch it, and it may head not for Mars but straight into the sun, or into the nearest 7-11. Even with the same initial conditions, the trajectory cannot be predicted with certainty. 

Each day, most of us wake up with more or less the same initial conditions as the day before. But the day never ends up in the same place. It's chaos. 

Unlike the time-honored Eurologic practice of erecting a musical structure whose integrity and realness is then proved or disproved under analysis, chaotic instrument practice allows both performer and listener to come together in the activity of observing behavior as it unfolds.

A tribute to my mother who had a tragic life. This is a remix of a track I recorded during my stay in South Africa. Played on Steinerphone, an early version of the EVI (Electronic Valve Instrument) Tom Szczesniak plays piano on my remix.

Please enjoy this field recording of birds singing at sunset! I recorded this landscape while camping on Vickery Pond at Pillsbury State Park in New Hampshire. Throughout the recorded audio, you can hear frogs, insects, water sound effects, and, of course, birds! This was such a relaxing and peaceful place, I hope you are transported here too while listening!

This field recording was created using an Olympus LS-10 PCM Recorder paired with an external DIY SASS recording rig on a tripod on the edge of the pond.

Singing Bird Songs at Sunset | HD Binaural Field Recording

This is my favorite recording from my 5 day camping trip on the Chattooga River in South Carolina. 

I woke up around 5am this morning to the first bird call of the dawn chorus. I quickly and quietly got out of my sleeping bag and setup my Sony D100 on a tripod and began recording. 

This recording is the highlight from a longer, 60 minute recording. I love the natural reverb effect from the birds calling across the open river.

Dawn Chorus on a River | Sony D100 Field Recording

Visual music artist, designer, researcher, PhD candidate, York University. The name "bebopple" was given to me by a nephew of Miles Davis while I was teaching new media at Queens University, NYC in 2000. Miles told his nephew the best way to create a nickname for someone was by substituting what they're into with what they're called. so Bob Appleton and bebop, became bebopple.
