Lightning is an uplifting, whimsical, and heartfelt story about falling in love and being in love, woven with similes like butterflies rising, lightning striking, fireworks igniting, and stars colliding. The song unfolds with piano, synth, female lead, harmony and background vocals, and builds into the choruses, successive verses and bridge with the addition of strings, guitar, bass, percussion, and cello, closing with a dramatic diminuendo to a piano and vocal, like the abrupt quiet after the last lightning strike of a storm echoes through the air.
