By now it’s common knowledge that Etch is one of the brightest sparks working in the field of contemporary breakbeat mangling. The Brighton-based producer has the depth of knowledge about breaks, and the expressive affinity for how to slice and rearrange them, to rank among some of the greats. We’re talking Photek, Paradox, Source Direct levels of drum science here. Of course he’s more than just a break slicer too – look no further than last year’s Strange Days LP on Seagrave for a more widescreen angle on the Etch sound.

Toasting five years since we first carried some of Zak Brashill’s advanced junglisms on Sneaker, and three since his 2018 album Ups & Downs, we’re thrilled to welcome him back for an excursion into the heart of his drumfunk practice. On the A side of this single the sound field is sparse and taut, echoing the stripped-back, minimalistic atmosphere Paradox just brought to SNKR029. All emphasis is on the drums, and the staggering contortions they’re bent into. Where there is additional sonic dressing, it comes in noirish chord drops and distant celestial vapours that add to the palpable sense of tension.

By the contrast the B-side welcomes in a little more human warmth, with a vocal hook on ‘Shadows Passed By’ that calls back to Smith & Mighty’s flip of the Bacharach soul standard ‘Walk On By’, and a collaboration with Luo that trades in blue-tinted vibes and airy diva vocals. In both instances, needlepoint beat programming is still key and an overall sense of restraint guides the composition, lingering in a sustained mood rather than breaking out in excess drama. Etch sounds more accomplished and in control than ever on this 12”, and we’re honoured to be releasing such vital additions to the jungle narrative.

We had the pleasure of meeting @k_atya alongside Riz La Teef couple months back at HighRise over in Bristol for the UKG special. Straight away we knew it was family for life, mad energy, good vibes and one hell of a DJ. Katya has blessed up her ec2a family with this super slick 70 minute mix cutting through all sorts of flavours its almost hard to keep up. If you like 2step, techno, electro, breaks and general bass ridden goodness this is the mix for you.

We welcome the Local Group duo to the Global Mix series today as they bring their fusion of UK sounds, including garage, jungle and breakbeat to our Global Mix series airwaves.

Local Group consist of London based DJs and producers Corporeal Face & LMajor, both heavily inspired by everything the UK sounds have to offer. The duo's sets include everything from the sounds of garage, jungle, hardcore, happy hardcore though to breakbeat and electro.

With a stack of  releases on labels such as Corrupt Data, Secret Rave, Human Concrete Block and Dead Trax, and more recently their rave and hardcore inspired 4-track EP entitled, 'Big Beats Are The Best', which included a remix from Angel D’lite, it's fair to say they're consistent with their output. 

The Field Maneuver residents provide us with our latest Global Mix in our ever growing series, with an hour of their signature sounds to soundtrack our afternoon.

Bit of background on Mr Sideshow Will - A well-rounded trip is Aussie gave Will the bug for music that keeps biting. He came back to NZ filled to the brim with inspiration. Only & immediately to be adopted into the legendary Whatevers Radio crew(Skyway.Krd) Sam & Zing. 

These like-minded music brats have been throwing some of the sickest gigs in AK, hosting or running a DJing studio on Krd, and delivering fine asf DJ sets at Bars, Clubs, Streams & Radio for some time now along with other Auckland talents.

The first time I met Carlotta, many moons ago, she was the only person dancing on the D-floor with not a care in the world, singing the lyrics to a bunch of deep-cut dance music, full vibin! unapologetic joy!

It was apparent that dance music was a huge passion in her life.

Baby Kiko whipped up this irresistible-to-move club mix just days before shooting off to London to do the damn thang over there (We miss you!!!)

Baby Kiko is a dear friend of ours that we, unfortunately, didn't get to see play live in Poneke prior to her boost (as we are in Tamaki), but it's a great triumph that we pulled this secret weapon set before the departure so we can have one last dance. 

We miss her sets/broadcasts coming through the e-waves/airwaves of Mouthfull Radio, but for all dem fans like us - We got you!
