A positive change in consciousness has the power to topple barriers almost as easy as a negative change creates them; this simple understanding has fueled my musical drive since the beginning with me using the microphone. Such a power without a proper conduit can be disastrous so I found myself volunteering my music and time to Art-Start (art-start.org) which was easily the most rewarding experience of my life. How lucky I was at so early in my career to be a part of a movement that can go from performing at the national arts club to an american history class at NYU so seamlessly. The program gave me a sense of direction, understanding and a hope for change; real change in myself and my environment. My podcast, Fare of the Free Child, airs weekly and centers black and brown people’s voices and experiences in discussions about unconventional parenting, particularly how we facilitate learning. I team up with special-invited co-facilitators to discuss the fears and the fares (costs) of raising liberated children of color in a world that tends to diminish, dehumanize, and disappear them.
