Hessle Audio feat. Ben UFO with Eden Burns and Sophie McAlister - 07 February 2022

LUXE is a DJ and producer who's firmly on the rise. Real name Lucy Hopson, she cut her teeth in Manchester as part of the B.L.O.O.M crew, later making the move to London where her skills both behind the decks and in the studio have quickly piqued the interests of promoters and DJs alike. 

There's a correlation between both ventures; her DJ sets are full of hefty bass, crisp breaks and driving trance sounds, while her productions so far have followed much of the same influences. With a few self-releases and compilation tracks under her belt, she recently made her solo debut for HAAi's Radical New Theory imprint, and Belonging is just as you'd imagine: hypnotic, chugging trance and breakbeat dripping with tittering percussion and warm sub bass.

There's plenty more to come for Lucy this year and beyond but first, she takes us through the gears on today's mix, launching at 100bpm and transporting us all the way up to 160...

LUXE: The 'Shine A Light On' Mix

Peach's DJ bio simply reads: "Ball of energy." And that's exactly what she brings each and every time. The Toronto-born, London-based DJ has made high impact, thrillingly eclectic sets an art form in the last few years having first started to turn heads with her brilliantly broad radio shows on NTS. Her dynamism also carries over into the music she has produced for labels like Midland's Intergraded and Shanti Celeste and Gramrcy's Peach Discs. 

Peach's signature passionate style runs all the way through this week's mix. From the flurry of jungle breakbeats that open it up to the prickly bass, frenetic club rhythms and euphoric rave of the midpoint, it's an unrelenting ride. The second half becomes more spaced out, with roomier cuts and hypnotic grooves carrying you through the night and into the next morning.

I would dance dabke with all of my extended family to a live singer and a small band of a synthesizer keyboardist and a derbake player, inspiring the natural percussive rhythm consistent in the music I resonate with.

"I'm usually the first person to label Valentine's Day a commercial scam," says Kikelomo in the interview below, "however I recently realised that sharing music and connecting with people through sound is one of the ultimate expressions of love for me." When the Berlin-based DJ sent in her mix to RA, she subtitled it "All about love." It's nearly two hours of dance music that radiates warmth, positive energy and compassion, expressed through the wide, almost kaleidoscopic genre lens that Kikelomo has made her own. House, jungle, electro, hip-hop, you name it. The mix is even split into two distinct sides, like an old-school cassette mixtape.

In addition to being a great and adventurous DJ, Kikelomo also started @orokoradio, a station based in Accra, that connects the Ghanaian capital—and other African cities—with the usual electronic music hotspots, and showcases homegrown talent and sounds through a platform of their own making. It's all part of her mission as a DJ to not only share music and love, but also to connect, uplift and create real community, as she also discusses below. It's not just a buzzword for Kikelomo, but a mission.
