Tolchneva is no newcomer, even though “Moroka” is her first full-length recording. She’s been playing in Tikhie Kamni with Moa Pillar, done magnetic sound installations and participated in countless performances on the verge of sound art and contemporary dance.

Anastasia Tolchneva’s debut album is full of hints at “wave music” and post-club microgenres but the scale of composition and production is way beyond the typical expectations of “bedroom tracks”. Full of digital sheen, cold synth lines are more than an accompanient for Anastasia’s powerful voice rooted in Northern Russian folk tradition. She sings in her mother tongue with zero histrionics. Often dipping into rivers of sub-bass, these expansive, intense, powerful songs and suites are aimed at an attentive listener and full of nuances. In a way, “Moroka” is a constant gut-punch, but it's also incredibly moving.

Lovozero’s debut album is definitely a statement that makes for a difficult and rewarding listen.
