The Project: Do something you’ve been putting off.

A long overdue experiment with processing vocals through a Red Panda Particle granular delay with pitch-shift.

Signal chain is: vocals through a Zoom H1n > Earthquaker Devices Avalanche Run, set on reverse delay + reverb > Red Panda Particle on pitch-shift setting. Everything performed live in the moment, with a bit of EQ to tame lows and brighten, and two edits after the fact for time and composition. For each section, I sang one sustained note and listened until I got a pitch-shift pattern that I liked, then I 'froze' it with the Chop control to create a loop, and improvised the other vocal parts over it in real-time.

All instruments in this song were compiled in Bram Bos’s late, lamented Tuareg2 software. Started late one night with a sampled hum into a SM57 just for fun, and went from there. The highest melody was created with Tuareg’s AMBER synth. Expansive reverb courtesy of Sonar’s BREVERB.

The Project: Make music with 10 acoustic instrument samples all in a shared key.

Thank you to @daniel-diaz for the beautiful samples!

I was inspired by the chord progression in the melodica sample, so I used that as a base to created a rhythmically-shifting generative drone in the Borderlands Granular app on my iPad, eventually using all 10 of the samples. It was a fun challenge mapping the patchwork of waveforms across the screen so that I could trigger different parts of overlapping samples with various moving 'circles' of granular processing. The end result came out rather lilting and mysterious.

The Project: Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something with it.

These ice samples were recorded by whirling ice cubes in a growler back in 2017. I looped a section and processed that through a Make Noise Strega, recording the piece mostly as one improvised take where I 'played' the filter to create layers of feedback in the delay. There is one overdub where I improvised repitching the same ice loop in Samplr and also processed that through the Strega, creating different tones of delay feedback. There's a bit of judicious volume envelope editing added in post to calm the feedback swells a bit. It all reminded me of a slow motion version of the wild ricochet sounds made by dropping ice down a bored ice core well.

Three recorded tracks of piano, panned separately and slightly offset, create their own ambient delay. Reverse reverb and reverse samples of the piano track, both distorted/delayed and smooth, play in and out of the mix.

E.O.S - Soft Landing (Soft Stars Remix By Belly Full Of Stars)

For this project I recorded conversations with friends at my house from different locations, while they gathered in the basement - from the top of our stairs (roughly 30 feet away), about 15 feet further and around the corner in our kitchen, and about 30 feet further and down the hall in our bathroom - with windows open in all upstairs locations.

A couple of thoughts stood out to me while working on the project:

1. The prevalance of noticable background noise, and how unnoticed it becomes when conversation takes center stage. I barely registered some of these ambient sounds while recording, but listening back, they suddenly became focal points in the recording. This is expressed in the piece with the car noise in the main rhythm loop, and the isolated whistling train tone that became the main tonal feature in the piece.

2. The sounds that struck me the most were the ones recorded in the bathroom, one story directly above my friends, with the sound mainly coming through the floor. Their voices were the most distant-sounding there: the quietest, the most muffled. They sounded removed from the world from where I was, but also captured and contained; buried. An interesting phenomenon, considering that I was actually in very close proximity to them at that point - but the barriers of wood, drywall, tile and insulation created the most perceived distance of any of the recording locales. Material obstruction trumped distance. Opening the window made the voices sound slightly closer - I could hear a hint more distinction, more frequencies seemed to escape from the closed room below.

3. Distance adds confusion to voices - intertwines sound. At one point in the recording simultaneous conversations were captured at the top of the stairs. Having been in the room (and one of the voices), the conversations when nearby seemed clear, separate and intelligible. Listening from a distance, they all arrive at equal loudness, colliding in time and noise at the top of the stairs. What were separate threads of thought and sound, now knotted together.

The piece starts with a badly edited snippet of conversation recorded in the kitchen, with a car zooming up the street accidentally captured in the background. I kept the DC pops in the edit as I looped, using them to generate part of the rhythm track.

The first voices heard are the intertwined conversations, recorded at the top of the stairs, artifially muffled (with a low-pass filter), digitally mimicking the effect I noticed while recording later in the bathroom, where the sound came through the floor.

The the higher sustained tone is the enhanced/filtered sound of a distant train whistling along its tracks. That happened to be a background noise I noticed later, captured through the kitchen window.

At about 1:10 I bring in the unprocessed sound of the conversation recorded from the bathroom with the window open.  At around 1:42 a loop of  muffled laughter also from the bathroom recording starts bouncing around the piece. 

At 2:34 I bring back the filtered, multi-threaded conversation from the beginning of the song . As the piece comes to an end, I slowly raise the filter frequency until you finally hear a the unprocessed conversation loop, as it sounded at the top of the stairs.

All sounds recorded in the wild on a Zoom H4n. Audio clips were edited in Audacity, and Carrying The Conversation was produced in Sonar X3 using Camel Crusher and SoundToys VSTs.

This song created originally for the Disquiet Junto Project 0223: Layered Sameness
The Assignment: Record multiple, slightly varying takes on the same looped composition in this project by Monome’s Brian Crabtree (@tehn).

A 4 measure phrase, repeated 4 times, performed live and recorded on 4 different tracks.

Solo vocal through a Shure SM7B, processed to track with a Tube Amp sim (with a bit of drive) and chorus on a Line 6 POD, then through a gated (by input level) reverb from a Lexicon MPX100.

I chose a voice as a sound source because of it's variable nature - you can never get the same take twice. I also tried to (randomly) "perform" the bits of gated reverb glitching on each pass by changing my distance to the mic as I sang. I knew I'd be tempted to add harmonies if I only sang a one or two note riff, so I built the melody around a triad, and hoped my timing would be off enough, so that looping it would generate the harmonies(it did).

Rerefraction [disquiet0223 - layeredsameness]

To mark the passing of Soundcloud's Groups, this project asked the artist to “Compose a short composition in memoriam for a piece of recently deceased software” 

Is a program truly "dead" if it still exists on your hard drive? If it hasn't been updated since 2009, and is no longer distributed... then probably so. This is my rather dreamy requiem in and for the lamented Tuareg 2 by Bram Bos. Flaws, pops, and crackles in the audio engine and all, I'm still fond of it to this day. RIP (and thrive on, as long as my hard drive lasts).

(a few additional production notes...) Most of the piece is based on a sample from another improvised piece tentatively called Coup Tourist, which may eventually see the light of someday. A 5x Paulstretched version of that riff is looped directly near the end, while in the rest of the piece the sample is manipulated through Tu2's Bliss 2 virtual sampler and my favorite gating/slicing effect possibly of all time - the Variator. The high bell-like melodies are Tu2's Halo FM synth, and the bass is it's Amber animated modeling synth.

Pops, crackles and artifacts are just part of the charm with this software - it is not gentle with it's phrase looping points. But if you're open to it, it can lead to some great noise patterns along the way.

The Long Way Home (Ft. BFOS)

The project: "An exercise in when a sound ends."

A long-fading sound, the same notes played, each time held until you’re certain you can no longer hear it. Then repeat (with feeling). Record a live performance.

I spent an hour or two on sound design. What I came up with was a bit convoluted... but worked: Yamaha CS2x Wurlitzer > Catlalinbread Callisto > Line6 POD (set on a basic delay) > Earthquaker Devices Avalanche Run > Lexicon MPX 100. 

My goal was to create a sound where bits and pieces of other notes and overtones stuck out at different times, one that would "drift off" the decay to highlight the silences in between, and a sound that was dynamically sensitive to the performance. A couple of key elements to achieving this was bringing in the natural(ish) resonance of the Lexicon chamber reverb, and lengthening the decay on the Wurli sound so that holding the chord a tiny bit longer bloomed the lower register.

Listening to each chord fall into silence was a good exercise in mindfulness. I had to tamp down my instinct to find a tempo a time or two.

There are a couple of faults in the recording - an over or two crackled in the Lexicon, and I tripped over a note towards the end - but, hey: live recording!

In The Wurling Halls [ disquiet0260 - tonefade ]

The project: Record a piece of music that plays with the perception of time.

The first thing I thought of... well, was delay. Close on it's heels, though, was the relationship between time and distance, and how in sound it can be expressed through pitch. I've looped a small part of a field recording of a distant ice cream truck - the natural Doppler effect adding a bit of wistful interest, along with some some added delay (DDLY)and filtering (FabFilter Volcano). I also Paulstretched & filtered the truck chime melody to create the growing dread sound heard in the middle of the song. The rest is a sine-base patch (Transine) from my Yamaha CS2X, processed and recorded live through an Earthquaker Avalanche Run delay/reverb pedal. For one of the passes, I played with sweeping the delay time on the pedal, creating the pitch dips, rises, and glitches as the track was recorded. It was a nice bit of serendipity having the ice cream truck sample at hand - a sound that generates memory time travel all on it's own.

(nice note: the repeated high D motif near the end is reminiscent of a track I worked on with a friend at college - more time travel!)

Lay Lines [ disquiet0277 - chewconcrète ]

The project: Make music for Paige Dansinger’s Palmyra 3D/VR images, paying tribute to the late Bassel Khartabil.

This is an edited two-minute excerpt from a seven-minute improvised multitrack piece created for the project.  All parts were recorded live on a Korg Volca FM, processed by Earthquaker Devices Avalanche Run (delay/reverb) and Old Blood Noise Endeavors DarkStar (orchstral/pitch shift reverb) pedals. A bit of Valhalla Room was added in places during editing.

I spent a little bit of time looking at the motion in Paige's images, and decided to try to give a nod to the light loops in her work. I came up with the higher arpeggiated line (that comes in midway through the piece), while watching her Tetrapylon image and trying to imitate the rhythm of the loop. From that starting point, I created the rest of the track.

Rest in peace Bassel Khartabil.

The project: 3 chords x 100 seconds

After reading the project description, I keyed in on the idea of creating sounds that would sustain for the entire 100 seconds, rather than replaying or retriggering an instrument periodically. I realized that the trick was that while I had plenty of ways to make sounds that would sustain for the duration... they were single tones, and I couldn't generate a chord. Conversely, I had plenty of instruments that would play lovely triads... but they would trail out long before the 100 seconds (unless I decided to use a synth patch that I could tweak). So I set about looking first for sound sources that would sustain or resonate, and then would try to figure out how to process those sounds into chords later on. After banging on a lot of diningware, some toys, and random resonant surfaces, I settled on:

1. My voice singing a single note, then pitch and frozen-delay processed through a Red Panda Particle granular delay pedal.

2. The hum of the touch panel keyboard on my Volca Beats, recorded through an electromagnetic pickup, and pitch processed through an Old Blood Noise Dark Star 'orchestral' delay pedal.

3. An organ-ish patch on my Volca FM, processed through an Earthquaker Avalanche Run reverse delay and reverb.

I used B/D/A as my chord structure - based on the pitch from the EM pickup on the Volca Beats, and complimentary harmonies on the Dark Star. The processed vocal and the noise/hum patch created from the EM pickup both wound up being generative/infinite sustain sounds. The FM organ is the only one where I fudged my idea a little - creating most of the sustain by adjusting the envelope decay time in the synth.

A little filtering, fading, and slight delay (iZotope DDLY) and reverb (Valhalla Shimmer) were added to sweeten the mix.

100 Grains in the Infinite Hum [ disquiet0300 - the300thproject ]

The project: Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something of it.

I've decided to make this annual beginning-of-the-year challenge a long drawn out Work In Progress, each year expanding on the work done the year before. Last year: samples recorded! But... that and a few short loops were as far as it went (note: no entry for last year). 

This year: a cohesive idea! I used a short loop and a one-shot recording made last year of ice in a Sam Adams specialty pint glass, and made those the foundation of the piece. All sound sources are from those two short samples. Each sample was loaded into it's own instance of iZotope Iris 2 - one made into the loop that is the repeating backbone of the piece, and one performed live as first accompaniment, and then the bitcrushed melody. 

Everything was performed as one live take, processed as recorded through my latest series of pedals: JamMan Express XT looper > Earthquaker Devices Avalanche Run delay/reverb (reverse delay + slight verb)> Neunaber Immerse Reverberator (on 'shimmer' setting). An Old Blood Noise Dark Star orchestral reverb was also used on an aux send, to take care of resonant bit crush duties for the melody.

Thinking about this as a work in progress: this was a bit of an experiment with the new pedal lineup, as I had just gotten the Immerse over the weekend. One of many *completely different* takes. (Most were ambient noise-builds.) I like the flow of the piece overall, but feel the sound of the melody could have possibly been put together differently (a more subtle/smoother tone), which would have made it gel a bit better. I do like the bitcrush tone itself, and the contrast to the rest of the tones, though. I would have also liked a more subtle mix or different processing on the higher pitched ice loops that come in later. But... live takes! So there you go. It will be fun to play with this next year.

*No crickets were harmed - or even used - in the making of this music*

A duet between an accidentally glitched piano track, and purposefully glitched CD drive.

The piano track was originally recorded in an attempt at a previous Junto challenge (0221: Morning Music). A processor-hungry reverb plugin overtaxed my computer, and the resulting glitched track was made.

The CD drive duet track is a recent recording of my computer trying to read a cracked and blistered CD. I placed an EM pickup on the outside of the drive to record the glitched attempts. Some liberties (read: edits) were taken to make the part a slightly more 'musical' accompaniment. The 'crickets' are an artifact in the EM recording, that I highlighted with a bit of filtered delay.

The project: Derive something spooky from a specific place.

A recent trip to Ohio was filled with ancestors and graveyards...

Sounds used for this piece are field recordings of wind, wind chimes, pinwheels, and footsteps recorded at Preston Cemetery in Alger, Ohio on October 3, 2018. All sounds were processed and the piece performed live through the Borderlands Granular app on an iPad.

Doorbells at the entrance to another realm...
(best to listen on a dark night, over headphones)

A Visitation [ disquiet0356 - groundswell ]

The project: Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something of it.

A visit back to last year's cold start, this piece crystallized from freshly edited outtakes of Icee [disquiet - 0314] (https://soundcloud.com/bellyfullofstars/icee-disquiet0314-coldstart). The tracks are mostly presented as originally recorded, featuring ice cube sounds processed through a series of effects pedals (JamMan Express XT looper, Earthquaker Devices Avalanche Run, Neunaber Immerse Reverberator, Old Blood Noise Dark Star). A higher pitched clinking ice loop from a separate take was added in, and Paulstreched versions of last year's melody were repitched into an icy choir. Any sound resembling a T.A.R.D.I.S. is purely coincidental.

Shiver [ disquiet0418 - ice-nine ]

The project: Make music from 100+ vocal samples of held syllables by members of the Disquiet Junto.

I wanted to hear what would happen if I let the timbre and original pitches of the Dischoir dictate the composition, with me serving as the transcriber/arranger. So I used the samples without change as much as I could, while still attempting for it to sound like a community choir singing together... just one that happens to gather online rather than all at once in a room. 

So this is it - everyone, the whole Dischoir. I have it at 53 participants, I think. One sample from every Dischoir member is in the mix somewhere, for the most part unprocessed. There are two people who sent in multiple samples, where I used two of those in the mix (@baconpaul and @atomboyd).

Only very minimal pitch shifting was used, and in only 5 voices, mainly to follow the melody - the lower note in Atom's voice a minor 3rd down for the main motif; In the middle section: a major 2nd down in Hugh's voice, my voice, and Atom Boyd's high melody, and a major 2nd up in AJ Miller's drone to match a chord change. Everyone else is at the same pitch in which they originally sang their sample.

There is some sample stretching, done through Groove Clip Looping in Sonar. And plenty of voice doubling throughout. Otherwise, there are no other effects. The arrangement was edited and assembled entirely in Sonar.

I started the process by listening to every sample and grouping them by pitch. Then, after the initial inspirational spark of the main riff heard in the first measures, I worked with the pitched groupings to create the final chord structure and arrangement around it. This took awhile! But I'm very happy hearing the results.

Sounds from the forest in back, a nearby highway, and a Tyson plant that never sleeps (even in the time of COVID-19) are heard in the background. Fortuitously timed passing train sounds mingle and play with Gretchen's transported street sounds from Yokohama.
