The Project: Do something you’ve been putting off.

A long overdue experiment with processing vocals through a Red Panda Particle granular delay with pitch-shift.

Signal chain is: vocals through a Zoom H1n > Earthquaker Devices Avalanche Run, set on reverse delay + reverb > Red Panda Particle on pitch-shift setting. Everything performed live in the moment, with a bit of EQ to tame lows and brighten, and two edits after the fact for time and composition. For each section, I sang one sustained note and listened until I got a pitch-shift pattern that I liked, then I 'froze' it with the Chop control to create a loop, and improvised the other vocal parts over it in real-time.

The Project: Make music with 10 acoustic instrument samples all in a shared key.

Thank you to @daniel-diaz for the beautiful samples!

I was inspired by the chord progression in the melodica sample, so I used that as a base to created a rhythmically-shifting generative drone in the Borderlands Granular app on my iPad, eventually using all 10 of the samples. It was a fun challenge mapping the patchwork of waveforms across the screen so that I could trigger different parts of overlapping samples with various moving 'circles' of granular processing. The end result came out rather lilting and mysterious.

The Project: Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something with it.

These ice samples were recorded by whirling ice cubes in a growler back in 2017. I looped a section and processed that through a Make Noise Strega, recording the piece mostly as one improvised take where I 'played' the filter to create layers of feedback in the delay. There is one overdub where I improvised repitching the same ice loop in Samplr and also processed that through the Strega, creating different tones of delay feedback. There's a bit of judicious volume envelope editing added in post to calm the feedback swells a bit. It all reminded me of a slow motion version of the wild ricochet sounds made by dropping ice down a bored ice core well.

Ice Drops - [disquiet0523 - chillcommunication ]

The project: Record the sound of ice in a glass and make something of it.

I've decided to make this annual beginning-of-the-year challenge a long drawn out Work In Progress, each year expanding on the work done the year before. Last year: samples recorded! But... that and a few short loops were as far as it went (note: no entry for last year). 

This year: a cohesive idea! I used a short loop and a one-shot recording made last year of ice in a Sam Adams specialty pint glass, and made those the foundation of the piece. All sound sources are from those two short samples. Each sample was loaded into it's own instance of iZotope Iris 2 - one made into the loop that is the repeating backbone of the piece, and one performed live as first accompaniment, and then the bitcrushed melody. 

Everything was performed as one live take, processed as recorded through my latest series of pedals: JamMan Express XT looper > Earthquaker Devices Avalanche Run delay/reverb (reverse delay + slight verb)> Neunaber Immerse Reverberator (on 'shimmer' setting). An Old Blood Noise Dark Star orchestral reverb was also used on an aux send, to take care of resonant bit crush duties for the melody.

Thinking about this as a work in progress: this was a bit of an experiment with the new pedal lineup, as I had just gotten the Immerse over the weekend. One of many *completely different* takes. (Most were ambient noise-builds.) I like the flow of the piece overall, but feel the sound of the melody could have possibly been put together differently (a more subtle/smoother tone), which would have made it gel a bit better. I do like the bitcrush tone itself, and the contrast to the rest of the tones, though. I would have also liked a more subtle mix or different processing on the higher pitched ice loops that come in later. But... live takes! So there you go. It will be fun to play with this next year.

The project: In collaboration with composer Danny Clay, make music for his exhibit with artist Jon Fischer using only sine waves and turntable surface noise.

Among the many eclectic finds in my late grandfather's record collection is a personally inscripted copy of a 1961 album by the college acapella group The Wellesley Tupelos. Given its (apparently) personal nature, its nicely noisy-looking coat of dust, and its antiqued choir warbles, it seemed like the perfect record for this project. 

To capture the surface noise/vibrations, I first tried a contact mic attached to the innermost groove of the record, while dropping the needle on the first track (Bahama Mama). After my twisting cable pulled the mic off the vinyl, I tried attaching it to the tone arm, instead. All of the vinyl surface noise sounds in this piece are from that recording.

For the sine tones, I pared down an EP preset on a Casio VZ-10m to a single oscillator, and removed any modulators. I recorded four tracks, playing live while adjusting the main envelop attack and sustain from the Casio's front panel. There are only few edits and looping of the vinyl tracks done post recording, along with a little bit of panning, and levels for the mix. 

The end result feels a bit like old vinyl meets slightly random tape loops - lines of similar thought that happen to be playing together, but maybe not all at the same speed.

The project: Share a piece of music you’re working on in the interest of getting feedback.

I've been working on this piece in the background for about a year. It's a combination of a couple of improvised takes made while rehearsing for the 2017 Memphis Concrète festival. One part is a set of loops made from a short phone recording at a rehearsal, and one is a longer studio take of a separate part. I thought the two worked interestingly together to make the basis of a drone. 

The piece is a slow burn for sure... but I wonder if it's too slow or slight a build to keep interest? I've had a couple of runs at doing things like highlighting certain higher frequencies to bring out parts and add interest, or adding a small part or two to make more of a build, but so far none of those have stuck. (Those tries are not included here.) I do think adding something in the mid-high to high frequency range would would work well, as the piece is mixed a bit on the dull side. The question is: what would that be? It could also just be close to done? I think at this point, some outside perspective would be good to have.

Any ideas, comments, suggestions are all welcome and appreciated.

Machine Noise At The Gate [ disquiet0336 - openmic]

The project: Record a piece of music entirely on the go.

There was a bit of fail this week that hampered my recording completely on the go (my kingdom for some batteries), but I tried to at least incorporate the spirit, by using samples from the weekend's musical roadtrip in the piece. 

All the instruments and gear used by me, at least, were battery powered and portable - Behringer mixer, Korg SQ-1 sequencer, Volca FM, VD400 Vintage Delay, tc electronics Hall Of Fame 2 reverb, and a Zoom H4n recorder looping the sample. The looped recording was taken from an improvised performance by David Dunn and Bryony Stroud-Watson on bass clarinet and violin, respectively. They played a beautiful abstract set with the cicadas, under the trees and stars on artist/musician Linda Heck's makeshift backyard stage for the Electric Arcadia Festival II, on Monteagle Mountain in Sewanee, Tennessee on a summer Sunday night (July 8, 2018).

While looping the sample, I ran a simple sequence on a custom patch on the Volca FM, clocking from the CV gate out of the SQ-1, with odd steps activated to give a bit of randomness to the sequence timing. I performed the piece by occasionally pausing the SQ-1 to create legato holds on the Volca FM patch, while simultaneously swelling the decay time on the HOF2 reverb (via it's handy pressure sensitive "MASH" footswitch), and transposing the FM patch via the Volca front panel.

I hope I captured some of the essence of that lovely night of music. Despite my portable failings (the piece was also recorded, ultimately, in my studio... despite best efforts), the challenge at least pushed me to work with a couple of pieces of gear I hadn't touched before (the SQ-1 & HOF2), and reminded me that if I ever really want to record cordless, I need cables. And another portable recorder. And patience. And batteries.

The project: Make a piece of music inspired by the art-historical term for fractal/recursion.

Nesting loops from a piano improv, with incidental bird chirps. 
I processed a small section from the original recording using only Sonar's Groove Clip Looping, extending it to 2, 3, 4, and 8 times the original length, and also shortening it to 1/2, 1/4, and nearly 1/8. I put all the resulting tracks together and, for the most part, let them run. Clicks from the processing are left in. The piece ends after the longest stretched version of the phrase finishes playing.

The project: Help define “glitch” by glitching something, and explaining what you did.

*No crickets were harmed - or even used - in the making of this music*

A duet between an accidentally glitched piano track, and purposefully glitched CD drive.

The piano track was originally recorded in an attempt at a previous Junto challenge (0221: Morning Music). A processor-hungry reverb plugin overtaxed my computer, and the resulting glitched track was made.

The CD drive duet track is a recent recording of my computer trying to read a cracked and blistered CD. I placed an EM pickup on the outside of the drive to record the glitched attempts. Some liberties (read: edits) were taken to make the part a slightly more 'musical' accompaniment. The 'crickets' are an artifact in the EM recording, that I highlighted with a bit of filtered delay.

The project: Derive something spooky from a specific place.

A recent trip to Ohio was filled with ancestors and graveyards...

Sounds used for this piece are field recordings of wind, wind chimes, pinwheels, and footsteps recorded at Preston Cemetery in Alger, Ohio on October 3, 2018. All sounds were processed and the piece performed live through the Borderlands Granular app on an iPad.

A visit back to last year's cold start, this piece crystallized from freshly edited outtakes of Icee [disquiet - 0314] (https://soundcloud.com/bellyfullofstars/icee-disquiet0314-coldstart). The tracks are mostly presented as originally recorded, featuring ice cube sounds processed through a series of effects pedals (JamMan Express XT looper, Earthquaker Devices Avalanche Run, Neunaber Immerse Reverberator, Old Blood Noise Dark Star). A higher pitched clinking ice loop from a separate take was added in, and Paulstreched versions of last year's melody were repitched into an icy choir. Any sound resembling a T.A.R.D.I.S. is purely coincidental.

My God, It's Full Of Ice [ disquiet0366 -  icebreaker ]

The project: Make a single piece of music with very few tools, all selected at random.

Out of the 48 instruments found in our household last week, a random selection of 3 were drawn: zither, ocarina, and an Audiothingies MicroMonsta synth.

It turns out that the zither is an old thrift store find that has not been tuned, or likely cleaned, in decades. Finding strings on it that were in key was a bit of a trick. Due to the discordant nature of strumming chords, other ways of playing were explored. The ocarina is from a music making toy kit, who's origins are unknown, but is probably a good story. 

An ebowed zither drone and synth improv is the backbone of this minimal sketch. Plucked zither parts and layered, delayed ocarina were added in improvised overdubs. The Micromonsta was kept purposely in a supporting role, letting the ringing texture variations of the ebowed zither and the warbling melodies of the ocarina stand out. The zither was recorded with a contact mic on the end brace. Both the zither and the ocarina were processed through the Avalanche Run and Immerse effects pedals.

Shiver [ disquiet0418 - ice-nine ]

The project: Make music from 100+ vocal samples of held syllables by members of the Disquiet Junto.

I wanted to hear what would happen if I let the timbre and original pitches of the Dischoir dictate the composition, with me serving as the transcriber/arranger. So I used the samples without change as much as I could, while still attempting for it to sound like a community choir singing together... just one that happens to gather online rather than all at once in a room. 

So this is it - everyone, the whole Dischoir. I have it at 53 participants, I think. One sample from every Dischoir member is in the mix somewhere, for the most part unprocessed. There are two people who sent in multiple samples, where I used two of those in the mix (@baconpaul and @atomboyd).

Only very minimal pitch shifting was used, and in only 5 voices, mainly to follow the melody - the lower note in Atom's voice a minor 3rd down for the main motif; In the middle section: a major 2nd down in Hugh's voice, my voice, and Atom Boyd's high melody, and a major 2nd up in AJ Miller's drone to match a chord change. Everyone else is at the same pitch in which they originally sang their sample.

There is some sample stretching, done through Groove Clip Looping in Sonar. And plenty of voice doubling throughout. Otherwise, there are no other effects. The arrangement was edited and assembled entirely in Sonar.

I started the process by listening to every sample and grouping them by pitch. Then, after the initial inspirational spark of the main riff heard in the first measures, I worked with the pitched groupings to create the final chord structure and arrangement around it. This took awhile! But I'm very happy hearing the results.

The project: Record someone else’s field recording of their environment playing within your own.

Recorded on location in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, playing Gretchen Jude's (@gretchenjude) field recording "temple through park" (https://soundcloud.com/gretchenjude/disquiet0436-temple-through-park) from an iPad in front of a Zoom H4n recorder while sitting on my back deck under the stars and clouds at 4:30 am. Sounds from the forest in back, a nearby highway, and a Tyson plant that never sleeps (even in the time of COVID-19) are heard in the background. Fortuitously timed passing train sounds mingle and play with Gretchen's transported street sounds from Yokohama.
