The brief for this week’s Disquiet Junto challenge noted how the singing of ‘Happy Birthday’ often falls apart around the name stage … This idea of musical collapse immediately made me think of Anglican church services, when the organ - along with those who are confident of the hymn being sung - sometimes falls into desperately trying to pull everyone along, never far from falling apart. In this piece, a recording I made of a service I attended a while back (which has its own backstory) becomes the material for electronic mangling and rhythmic snipping for my take on the idea of repeated collapse. It’s VERY far from being in the same league, but parts of the result remind me a little of Jonathan Harvey’s extraordinary Mortuos Plango, Vivos Voco (1980) - one of my all-time favourite electroacoustic masterpieces ...

I’ve been meaning for ages now to make a track using only one single suite of plugins … and this week’s Disquiet Junto brief has finally inspired me into action! ALL of the sounds you hear in this track are courtesy of wonderful Sinevibes plugins, and it’s been really fun to explore more of what these genius little plugins can bring … with plenty more exploration to be had! @sinevibes

This track uses Torsion as the main synth source, with Diffusion also providing sounds from its wave shape modelling synth engine. As you can hear, I’ve gone slightly mad on the effects front! I’ve made use of Sinevibes’ Emission, Hexonator, Inertia, Luminance, Multitude, Cluster, Drift, Droplet, Octagon, Array, Zap, Albedo, Atom, and Dispersion …!

Enjoy! 😁🤗 It's been enjoyable, and there could easily have been a 20 minute version of this! 😂

Step 1: In the early 1980s, an instrument called the Omnichord was introduced by Suzuki. There is now a browser-based version at onlineomnichord.com.

Step 2: Make some music using only the online Omnichord as your sound source.

Polar Strategies

A quick experiment built from a pair of Oblique Strategies cards:

“Honour thy error as a hidden intention” / “Just carry on”

This track started as an improvised bass demo over a simple low-note loop meant to replace a click track. I accidentally recorded four mismatched fingerboard-taps while trying to sketch a candombe-style groove — and instead of deleting them, I looped them across the whole piece. The synth layers were added later to make the odd bass/percussion hybrid loop actually work.

Loose playing, strange chord ideas, and all the imperfections left in on purpose. A fun morning session that I may revisit later.

Marco Lucchi & Henrik Meierkord - Into the impossible [Disquiet # 0727] be less critical more often

Track created for disquiet challenge  0727.  This track started out on my ipad and was finished on the PC DAW, Studio One. The piece consists of 4 tracks improvised straight through with no edits. 

The inspiration started with drawing two random prompts from Oblique Strategies; 
1. Breath Deeply
2. Don't avoid what is easy

I focused on my breath while performing and adjusting the track parameters. The rhythm comes from two sequences , 8 step and 5 step. The easy part was finishing a piece I've been working on in my ipad for a couple of weeks.

As I listened to the piece, I had images of dancing at night with the butterflies in the glitchgarden.

Tristan Louth-Robins is a South Australian artist working principally in the medium of sound art and field recording. Ideas of sound and its signification are key elements in Louth-Robins' practice, traversing the space between the visual and aural his work is realised through the mediums of recordings, installation, visual art and performance. He is interested in sound and its associative implications - including its relationship to objects, technology, urban space, memory and the natural world. 


Since 2005, Louth-Robins has presented work in Australia and internationally as a solo artist, whilst also collaborating with artists, writers, researchers, musicians and performers. 

Working across a vast array of activities encompassing composition, sound design, installation art, field recording and workshops, his work has been featured in events such as the Adelaide Festival of Arts (2006), The National Regional Arts Festival (2012), Mildura-Wentworth Arts Festival (2013), Fairfax Festival (2013) and Adelaide Fringe Festival (2014); and selected works exhibited at galleries including The Australian Experimental Art Foundation (2009), SASA Gallery (2012, 2015), Light Square Gallery (2012) and FELT Space (2015). His audio works have been broadcast on radio including Radio National, Classic FM, The BBC (UK), Acoustic Frontiers (USA) and RBB (Germany).

In some words:
Composer, arranger, producer, multi-instrumentalist. Born in Argentina,
I studied music in Buenos Aires, New York, Boston, Los Angeles and Paris.

For 20 years, I developed an important career as a session and backing musician in Argentina and Europe, playing, among other instruments, the bass, touring and recording with many jazz, rock, fusion, world, Latin and tango bands.

At the same time, I worked as an arranger, producer and musical director with many projects and artists in the USA, Argentina and Europe.

From 1992 to 1997, I performed my compositions live with my own band in Buenos Aires and began a solo recording career with the worldwide release of my first album "The Years Alone" on the North American label Green Linnet/Xenophile. On this album I arranged and performed 11 of my songs written between 1986 and 1993. I played most of the instruments, but included guest appearances by some great South American players.

My recording career continued with "Segundo Ciclo" (1997), released worldwide by Timeless Records, and 12 more albums released between 2000 and 2016.

Currently, I work as an on-demand film/TV composer while continuing to play live and produce.

"I'm a mellow artist, ageing 69. I love and release eclectic music, from post-classical to drone. My fave instrument is the Mellotron."
