"Things don't always go to plan. This set was originally planned to be performed at Interstellar Groove Festival 2024, but sadly, life got in the way and I had to cancel on the gig at the last minute. Having spent so much time amassing the music, piecing the set together and rehearsing it, I felt the pull to finalise things and close out the chapter. So after some time to breathe, I sat down and recorded it in one live take, as was planned for the stage at IGF.

With a heavy heart for my friends affected by fires in Los Angeles this week, I release my set from just a week ago when we started the year with hope and optimism at Subtract and Moon Kitty's super fun shindig to open 2025.  

First of all, big thanks to Treavor and Anton for having me.  It was so, so fun to play this party.  I knew close to half of the people there, had many great conversations and much fun dancing after.  Moontribe DJs are no joke!  So much talent :). Sarkis was great too!  I was happy with my set and am excited to share it.

I lived in various parts of LA for 36 of the 38 years between 1980 and 2018. It is not the world's most beautiful city by any means, but I always tell my friends not from there how special and thriving the underground music scene has always been in LA.  It's a city where you have to know someone to have a good time I think -  one of the least digestible cities as a tourist.

But all it takes, or ever took, is to experience one good LA underground event and a whole world opens up to you.  If you are bored in LA, it's no fault of the music scene.  

For me this one event was 1995's Big Wig Thumper at what was then called the Orange Showgrounds.  Though technically my 3rd rave, the other two were in 1991 when I was just about to graduate high school, and appreciated it but wasn't really ready for it.  Let's just say I hadn't found my dancing shoes yet.  But in 95, I was ready and I never looked back.  I've thrown a hundred parties and DJed hundreds in LA since.  

This is a hard mix description to write because my favorite US city is in flames.  Many of my friends have lost their homes, and several venues I've hosted Tropical at have been destroyed.  It feels inappropriate to promote events there with the fires raging, and I've struggled to even post this mix.

But... it is music.  And music can only help.  

I am here to help in other ways too!  I'm not in LA, but super connected so reach out if you need help.  Also have space in my home in Oregon for friends who want to get away to clean air for a bit.

Hoping for safety for my friends, squashing of fires asap, and then hopefully a hard look at how prepared we are for fires like this, and how we can improve on that <3


Ben Annand Live at Moontribe NYD 1-1-25 Los Angeles

I had the pleasure of playing for the incredible New York-based Burning Man camp Bubbles & Bass on New Year's Day. 

We had some unforeseen issues with the mixer recording, so this one is truly live: It's drawn from my camera's internal microphone so the quality may be more raw than usual. You'll hear chatter in the background, including my own. I tried my best to reduce it. 

Still, I wanted to share this bit of history for me: It was my first time getting booked in my hometown, New York City. Sincerest gratitude to the @bubbles-and-bass fam for having me. Here's to many, many more memories together.

This is a studio mix from December 20, 2011, in preparation for Forward SF, so on the deeper side.  I like it quite well and hope you do too.   

What's the difference between a studio mix and a live mix?  Well, other than the obvious, in a studio mix I tend to mix faster as I am more auditioning tracks than finding the perfect mix point, something I pay much more attention to live.  I'm a little more adventurous mixing too. I play some tracks that don't make it into my live sets so this is a good opportunity to test some of those out without it being live at a party.

Sometimes it works out better than others, this was a pretty inspired session which I deemed worthy of posting :)  It has a few trippy vocals and some interesting music that I don't play out a lot. Would love to have your comments, especially timed ones so I can see and id the track for you!  If the mix inspires you, I would love to have you favorite it!  If you think your friends would also like it I would love for you to share on Facebook, Twitter, My Space, Friendster (hah!) etc.  

2012 looks like a great year for me, and for both Tropical and Moontribe, the parties I am resident at!  I hope it's a great one for you too!

Biography:

In his zone from deep house to techno, Ben Annand pairs impeccably smooth mixing skills with a dynamic style that keeps the music moving, artfully playing with breakdowns and spending most of his time in the mix.

“For me, a great mix is the interplay of 2 unique pieces of music, creating something greater than the sum of the parts - and a great set weaves those mixes into a musical flow you can’t help but lose yourself in on the dance floor.”

Ben fell in love with dancing and rave culture in 1995, and learned to mix in 1996. Just 2 years later he became resident dj at the famed Moontribe Gathering, and started his own production company, Tropical. The first half of his career was mostly focused on DJing abroad, with 13 trips to Moscow’s Propaganda club, travel across Russia, Spain, and Mexico, an appearance at Wiggle at Fabric in London and two at the Labyrinth Festival in Japan.  

In more recent years, Ben Annand became a top West Coast festival DJ, and recently played a standout set at his 5th consecutive Lightning in a Bottle (CA). He has also appeared at Sunset Campout and Desert Hearts (CA), Oregon Eclipse (OR), Photosynthesis and Cascadia (WA), Shambhala and Motion Notion (BC, Canada).

As organizer of Tropical, he's donated over $32,000 to charity, hosted zero-waste events in Hawaii, and presented gender-balanced dj lineups.

Whatever his project,, Ben Annand is always contributing, and always thinking outside the box.
