Hailing from Bridgeport Connecticut, Blak Maul started as a local DJ. It wasn't until the late 90's when he moved to Sumter, South Carolina that he became a much sought after a mix tape monster. Under the alias of Money Mike the Blak Maulponopoly, he was well known for his turntablism and keen ear for hot street anthems and underground flavors. However, one fateful night he heard Pete Rock on 107.5 WBLS the In Control Marley Marl rap show. "When I heard Pete Rock on the radio... I began to collect more records for samples and break beats!" It was at this point in time when he began testing new grounds and entered the realms of production. Local emcees considered him to be the man to seek for gritty soul samples and with his well established studio within his own bedroom his recording was of utmost quality. After years of studying and perfecting his craft, what appeared to be his big break into the industry arose when an associate passed one of his tracks to Terror Squad member, Tony Sunshine in 2003. The excitement quickly died when Blak Maul didn't receive any future contact from the camp but, he continued building a style and sound of his own. He soon compiled his first mix tape compilation in 2004. Four years later, Blak Maul created his magnum opus. His second compilation, Blak Maul presents: Underground Souls then following; he released Blak Maul presents: The Mission, under his own label Blak Noize Entertainment. These albums boast talent from South Carolina, Texas, New York,New Jersey,Canada, Connecticut and Michigan.

In 2014, along with frequent collaborator Phoniks, he founded Don't Sleep Records.[2][3] Awon has shared the stage with many hip-hop acts including Little Brother, Common, EPMD, MC Lyte, and Oddisee.
