The KEY Vinyl label boss has been responsible for more than a few outstanding nights at the club, including our first-ever all-night-long set. If you know his name, you know his reputation: Freddy K is a bonafide underground hero, with a devotion to true-school techno that can legitimately  be called “uncompromising.” In this mix, he opens up a portal into another world, taking us deep into the heart of the spacious, psychedelic sound that is his calling card.

Blasting his way into our series this week, Dutch producer Robin Kampschoer revs up the engines and lifts us off to higher spheres of consciousness through two hours of chiselled post-industrial sound engineering. Exploring the confines of techno, somewhere at the junction of proper raw, steely rhythms and further elevated ambience-scaping, the RKM boss and STOOR alum swings the pendulum betwixt full-blown warehouse-ready assault and inward-gazing escapism effortlessly. Elegantly brutalist, his approach is both one of nuance and impact, exalting and pensive in equal measure, never flinching in its quest for the sweet spot between raging horsepower and nostalgia-soaked harmonics.

Here’s a rare Ben Sims set from Adelaide, 2003, recovered thanks to local legend Jorge Watts, who also played that night. Some words from him are below.

When I came back to Australia from living in Chicago, my partner in techno crime ‘Glenny’, Mr Paul Glenn said to me let’s start up a monthly techno night at Minke. And we did, with the sole intention of bringing our hero to town, the three deck legend Ben Sims. I set up my Tascam DA-30 Mk II DAT machine and we asked Ben if we could record, to which he graciously said yes… Here is the recording of that magical night.

Tatsuya Kanamori quickly became one of the few Japanese techno producers to rise to worldwide prominence within the late 90's techno scene with his productions and remixes as DJ Shufflemaster.
Originally a committed member of the Tokyo-based label Subvoice, where he released several of his early EPs, Kanamori's reputation outside of Japan was greatly aided by his affiliation with European techno heavyweights such as Adam Beyer, Joel Mull, Ben Sims and Carl Lekebusch.

It was no surprise that Berlin-based Tresor knocked on the door and offered Kanamori the opportunity to record her first full-length album. In 2001, he appeared via Tresor, a full-length LP packed with a string of dancefloor-oriented techno productions featuring Kanamori's trademark aesthetic, making him one of the first Japanese techno producers to achieve worldwide recognition.
