When we were growing up on our mountain in the Smoky Mountains, momma would call the dew that formed on the leaves in the early mornings "Smoky Mountain Tears"

It is the coming together of two ideas I had been playing with for a file, both inspired by the movement of snow and how it seems to float as well as fall. Recorded one night with 1 mic on my miniature Wagner upright piano using the felt pedal. (sorry for the poor recording)

Floating, Falling [Piano Day 2018]

"In the Beginning" is about the first steps towards accepting the reality of a devastating diagnosis, and the desire to create a new identity after going through such a life-changing experience. the bittersweet melody of the trumpet reflects the deep emotions associated with this inner struggle to move forward, and reluctance to leave the past behind.

Wanted to compose a piece that had a continuing sense of dread and suspense gradually building throughout. Could be used for a trailer or a very tense film scene.

The Beast

Dedicated to acclaimed pianist Lemuel Grave, ‘Waltz Awaiting’ was written as a gesture of thanks for the interest he has shown in my music, and for performing it.

The pianist in this instance is Jeanell Carrigan

Dr Jeanell Carrigan AM is presently an Associate Professor in Collaborative Piano at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, University of Sydney. She has performed as a soloist, chamber musician and accompanist in Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and throughout Australia, and has recorded for the Bavarian Radio Corporation, the ABC and for regional stations in Australia on many occasions. She holds a Doctor of Creative Arts in the area of Australian post-1970 solo piano repertoire and in May, 2016 released her seventeenth solo compact disc of Australian piano music. She is passionate about promoting Australian Music particularly the piano music of Australian women composers. In a review of the CD A Little Variation, composer Houston Dunleavy said “This recording is one to add to the list of treasures of Australian music that seem to be growing by the year. Surely Jeanell Carrigan belongs in this category as well. Australian music has a great champion in Carrigan’s fine playing and scholarship. She deserves far wide recognition for the quality of her work.” (Music Trust 1/4/15)

Recorded in August/ September 2017 in Verbrugghen Hall at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

The piano was the Fazioli concert grand tuned and maintained by David Kinney.

So in this piece I've try to encapture themes of wonder, danger, action, heroism and beauty.

Bali Folksong Instrumental - Macepatan - Africa Version

Pele is the goddess of fire, lightning, dance, wind, volcanoes and violence. Her poetic name is Ka Wahine 'Ai Honua - the "woman who devours the land". 

She is both a creator and destroyer. She throws molten fountains into the air and governs the great flows of lava. 

With her power over the volcanoes, she created the Hawaiian Islands and to this day, she has been known to reveal herself throughout the beautiful islands she crafted herself.

No Kahiki mai ka wahine 'o Pele,
Mai ka 'aina mai o Polapola,
Mai ka punohu a Kane,
Mai ke ao lapa i ka lani.

Translation:
The woman Pele comes from Kahiki,
From the land of Polapola,
From the rising mist of Kane,
From the clouds that move in the sky.

Any politician who sends another person to war... should go with them. In front.

  An English and American folk song favorite... The song seems related to ,"Siúil a Rún" which is a traditional Irish song, sung from the point of view of a woman lamenting a lover who has embarked on a military career, and indicating her willingness to support him. The song has English language verses and an Irish language chorus, a style known as macaronic.

As I understand it, The title translates to "go, my love" (or variants): siúil is an imperative, literally translating to "walk!", a rún is a term of endearment.
 
 My version is a simpler " Appalachian Mountains " arrangement that I learned long ago.  It does not follow what I hear these days. There may be some nicer chord changes for the song but...I like these too.

Johnny Has Gone For A Soldier - Solo Guitar - Folk Song

Ben is an award-winning composer and multi-instrumentalist based in the UK, specialising in writing for Picture. Being in close collaboration with top up and coming film makers, Tomisin Adepeju, Oz Arshad, Rehan Mudannayake and Lamont Lamar. 

He has composed music for over 30 shorts which have been in association with Sundance, Cannes, BFI, Bafta and Pinewood Studios and collectively won over 100 awards from international festivals.

Over the years Ben has cultivated a bold but sensitive style using both orchestral, electronic and experimental techniques to create his unique voice. His thrilling and emotional score for Ian Asbjornsen's sci-fi epic Odyssey Omega in 2020 received 4 Best Original Score awards and, in 2021, Ben had the pleasure of working with Emmy-nominated actress and writer Latitia Wright on her debut short film Things I Never Told My Father.
