Wanted to compose a piece that had a continuing sense of dread and suspense gradually building throughout. Could be used for a trailer or a very tense film scene.

The Cure

This track revisits an older piece that I posted  few years ago.  It is based on a midi recording of me trying to play the piano, but was heavily edited to cover up all the mistakes I tend to make.  I was never fully happy with the piece, even after the editing as the original sound quality, although full, perhaps had too much reverb that tended to lose some of the details.  

I have both edited the track at an individual note level as well as increasing the tempo in quite a few sections.  I have also experimented with a way of trying to give a greater spatial sense to the sound,  including the thought that the listener is also the player, or sitting right behind them.  

Any comments on the music itself or the sound production would be appreciated as always,  And as always, thank you for listening.

Behind a Cloud Revisited

Such an outstanding lineup of musicians from around the world on our original, We Gotta Beat This.  The Coronavirus continues to rampage every country, and it is up to all of us to do our parts to help slow it down.  Masks are essential and yet so many people do not wear them, despite the understanding of the science and how the virus is transmitted.

Joining me here are Mirko Borach on bass (Germany), Tony Chessells on guitar (Australia), Sam Mendez on tenor sax (Spain) and Annie Smart on vocals (Scotland).  Love what these musicians do individually and how they all help shape this essential message and music.  We hope you enjoy the music and also that you keep wearing masks, washing hands, social distancing and more.  It's up to everyone to get this beast under control and to get our communities back to safety.

Ben is an award-winning composer and multi-instrumentalist based in the UK, specialising in writing for Picture. Being in close collaboration with top up and coming film makers, Tomisin Adepeju, Oz Arshad, Rehan Mudannayake and Lamont Lamar. 

He has composed music for over 30 shorts which have been in association with Sundance, Cannes, BFI, Bafta and Pinewood Studios and collectively won over 100 awards from international festivals.

Over the years Ben has cultivated a bold but sensitive style using both orchestral, electronic and experimental techniques to create his unique voice. His thrilling and emotional score for Ian Asbjornsen's sci-fi epic Odyssey Omega in 2020 received 4 Best Original Score awards and, in 2021, Ben had the pleasure of working with Emmy-nominated actress and writer Latitia Wright on her debut short film Things I Never Told My Father.
