CAROLINA IN MY MIND By Allison Krauss & Jerry Douglas

    Newt Carter and I worked off and on with some Artist Development/ Management/Consulting projects. There was a adolescent female country singer someone put on his radar. He approached one of the parents and started a dialogue. Before signing a contract, she wanted a taste of what he had to offer.  
    Newt penned this song in a few days and emailed me (and the parent) this file of him playing and singing it.  The parent loved it and wanted to immediately record it.  She said it sounded just like Taylor Swift and that every radio station in the country would be playing it.  Newt stayed the course and told her that after signing the contract, he would start co-writing a full album with the singer, and tried to explain what foundation was needed for her child to have a shot at success. 
     After a few days the parent cut contact.  A few weeks later, a producer/engineer from another part of the state called Newt.  The child had just cut "County Fair," and told him that it was written by her grandfather.  The producer knew it wasn't written by some random person and called Newt to see if he had heard of them, since they were from outside Athens.  Newt let them know it was his song, but didn't mind them taking it.  He just mused that he had timestamps on his server from emailing the song, and that he could always go back and prove where it came from.  
   So this is Newt's attempt at a tongue-in-cheek Country-Pop song for a pre-teen female singer;

Puking teens in tight jeans.
Ribbons of blue, and clown shoes.
Petting zoo and tattoos.
Bright lights, school nights, scary eyes, bug bites.

Tom Waits (on Jim Wilson): "Wilson, he's always playing with time. I heard a recording recently of crickets slowed way down. It sounds like a choir, it sounds like angel music. Something sparkling, celestial with full harmony and bass parts - you wouldn't believe it. It's like a sweeping chorus of heaven, and it's just slowed down, they didn't manipulate the tape at all. So I think when Wilson slows people down, it gives you a chance to watch them moving through space. And there's something to be said for slowing down the world."
