Tracks of the Month - June 2015

Yin and Yang (n.) - the concept of duality forming a whole. A fundamental premise in Chinese philosophy now transposed to the electronic dance industry through the creation of Proton "Editions". Through encyclopaedic knowledge of the 800+ strong Proton roster of labels Tripp Baronner has envisioned a new concept of the principle of seemingly polar opposites, coming together as interconnected and independent universal forces - life and death, the dark and the light: one complete entity.

From a passion for underground progressive house at opposite ends of the audio spectrum - the deep, shadowy atmospheres to the blissful, shimmering melodies, "Yin" and "Yang" were born in an effort to represent this phenomenon in musical form. Each release will provide a single remix of an existing Proton roster track for two inextricably linked labels in the form of a light (Yang) and dark (Yin) edition. Released on the same day, a strong contrast in styles will thus serve to complement each other and nourish the whole.

In a glittering career spanning over two decades Tom Middleton has been involved in some of electronic music’s defining moments, from his early work with Aphex Twin, through his legendary collaborations with Mark Pritchard as Global Communication to his renowned mix compilations for the likes of Renaissance.

Following the sublime ‘WYV AUW CHU’ in 2013, ‘KUMTO GETHA / HEVA’ sees the release of Tom’s first original music in almost two years.

Forging together his trademark ‘liquatech’ soundscapes with contemporary dark club grooves, ‘KUMTO GETHA’ is a memorable dancefloor weapon, packing a serious low-end punch. 

Meanwhile ‘HEVA’ is a soaring melodic anthem, with gorgeous atmospherics and ethereal vocals flowing to an epic crescendo above an energetic bouncing groove.

Feelings of romance and hope imbue the spring months, as well as the music released this time of year. We're thrilled to present three uplifting new cuts by Jallen, Alex Byrka, & Jacqueline, which brilliantly capture the optimistic mood of the spring season.

American phenom Jallen has witnessed extraordinary radio support this past year across the globe. We were thrilled to feature him for the first time on our recent "Only Silk 03" compilation, his contribution to which is now available in full, unmixed form on this release. Specifically, Jallen's soulful remix of Schodt's classic "Angel No. 8" begins with a rolling bassline and a lush, melodic soundscape. The signature vocal stutters from the original mix tastefully punctuate the numerous midrange layers. In the song's heartfelt climax, we are treated to a triumphant breaks interlude, which crescendoes into a roaring drop.

Alex (a.k.a. Alexander) Byrka last appeared years ago on Silk with his stellar contribution to Silk Royal Showcase 02, "She Doesn't Know" (in collaboration with Bianco Soleil). It's our joy to feature him again, as his "Made In Heaven" is a truly rapturous progressive house classic in the making. Gorgeous melodic layers, including an ethereal vocal effect, join an energetic groove. In the main break, a stunning piano theme captures the 'heavenly' aura of the song and helps it reach its emotional zenith.

Like Jallen, Indonesian talent Jacqueline is a first-time contributor to our imprint. She makes an impressive debut with "Rise Up", a vintage progressive house cut that centers on a moody and infectious chord progression. A vocal stab sequence and piano motif enhance the already rich midrange, culminating in an inspired drop.

Back in October 2014, Dan Sieg released his debut artist artist album, "A Sense Of Wonder", on Silk Royal. One of the standout tracks from the US-based producer's album is "Gloom", which is now released as a single with accompanying remixes by Kobana (Poland) and Jallen (USA).

Kobana returns to the Silk label family with his remix of "Gloom". A soft and enjoyable is quickly established, and a smooth bassline is added shortly thereafter. The break features delicate piano layers, lush sound effects, and the delightful melodies from the original song. The refreshing percussion elements brilliantly support the piano notes, and delicious pad layers add further texture later.

Jallen, who we recently witnessed on Silk Royal with his remix of Schodt's "Angel No. 8", provides the second remix in this package. The song takes off with a hypnotic groove, including pleasant pad layers on top. A stimulating atmosphere is presented in the break, in which the lush piano line floats beautifully among glorious pads and sound effects.

Lastly, the Original Mix of "Gloom" has been added to this release. The tremendous atmosphere introduced in the first few minutes is truly inspiring, and the strong and intriguing percussion elements smoothly build a profound soundscape.

Following 2013’s superb ‘Excommunication EP’ Erkka returns with his most diverse solo release to date, the four track ‘Museme EP’. Title track ‘Museme’ is a nine-minute epic traversing through atmospheric beginnings into dark melodies and driving analogue percussion. 

‘Rocky’ channels an old-school electro flavour, combining punchy bass stabs and infectious rave stabs, whilst ‘Deep Purple’ is a unique cut of plucked strings and cascading melodies.

Rounding off the EP and typifying Erkka’s quirky sound is ‘Talk To The Hand’, an energetic groover filled with trademark wonky riffs and spacey sounds.

Ahead of his debut album, Ashworth will release an EP that contains three tracks from the record and 'Cork' is a deep, emotive cut that sets the tone for what's to come.

American veteran eleven.five continues to contribute brilliant progressive cuts to our label family. Recently, his collaboration with Meyce, "The Alliance" on Silk Royal, witnessed radio support from Above & Beyond. Now he's ready with a 2-track EP on Arrival, entitled "Gamble".

The title track starts off with a hypnotizing beat and intriguing sound effects, which are later accompanied by delicious woodwind notes. Stunning background stabs help build the soundscape, and in the break, we witness subtle, yet mesmerizing piano notes. The refreshing theme riff slowly builds thereafter, brilliantly surrounded by well-structured percussion layers.

The B-side, "Awkward Moment", starts out with gorgeous vocal effects and spellbinding sound effects in the background. As the song progresses, multiple delicate effects are added, thereby creating a brilliant atmosphere. The break showcases the fascinating theme riff to its full extent, hence letting the song continue in a true club-friendly soundscape.
