Tracks of the Month - June 2015

Silk Digital is proud to present "Move On," the second single from the forthcoming "Sapporo" album by Shingo Nakamura. The young Japanese sensation has quickly become one of the most revered producers in progressive house, thanks to timeless classics like "Sapporo" and "I'm With You." His latest effort is a collaboration with Kazusa, another great Japanese talent, who, like Shingo, is blessed with a gift for floating rhythms and uplifting melodies. The Original Mix represents everything that we've come to love from Shingo: emotional piano lines and dancing synth chords, soaring above a chilled prog house rhythm. Yet, the tone of the melodies in this one are slightly melancholic, as if to imply that the collaborators have literally 'moved on" from a great loss -- a former relationship or perhaps the tragic events of this past year in their native land. The main break highlights the incisive lead melody, as Shingo's piano once again strikes a deep chord in our hearts. In addition to the Original Mix, we have three lovely remixes, all of which were selected as the winning entries in our recent "Move On" remix contest (the prizes of which included free gear from Sonalksis and Soundcloud). The first is by Russian newcomer Matao, who recently turned heads with his standout remix of Louder Dale's "Halo" on our own Arrival Recordings. Matao brings a more aggressive energy to his interpretation, with PROFF-inspired percussion and gorgeous synth "swells" throughout the tune. Fellow Russian Aleksey Yakovlev offers a an equally dreamy and melodic interpretation. The rhythmic is slightly more in the "classic" progressive house vein; yet, the energy in this one slowly builds as the lead synth crescendoes in the first half of the tune. In the break, main riff from the original is left to stand on its own, with some interesting filtering and tremolo work added for a unique effect.Finally, Silk veterans Soarsweep present the stripped-down 'intelligent' rendering, a visionary take which could fairly be described as a rework.This remix features a variety of outer-worldly samples, a hypnotic bass swell, and a delicate lead arpeggio, which combine to create a stunning atmosphere. In the break, a light, tribal beat gently supports the gorgeous main theme, which soothingly (and welcomingly) appears in an otherwise melodically distinct track.

Yin and Yang (n.) - the concept of duality forming a whole. A fundamental premise in Chinese philosophy now transposed to the electronic dance industry through the creation of Proton "Editions". Through encyclopaedic knowledge of the 800+ strong Proton roster of labels Tripp Baronner has envisioned a new concept of the principle of seemingly polar opposites, coming together as interconnected and independent universal forces - life and death, the dark and the light: one complete entity.

From a passion for underground progressive house at opposite ends of the audio spectrum - the deep, shadowy atmospheres to the blissful, shimmering melodies, "Yin" and "Yang" were born in an effort to represent this phenomenon in musical form. Each release will provide a single remix of an existing Proton roster track for two inextricably linked labels in the form of a light (Yang) and dark (Yin) edition. Released on the same day, a strong contrast in styles will thus serve to complement each other and nourish the whole.

Following the sublime ‘WYV AUW CHU’ in 2013, ‘KUMTO GETHA / HEVA’ sees the release of Tom’s first original music in almost two years.

Forging together his trademark ‘liquatech’ soundscapes with contemporary dark club grooves, ‘KUMTO GETHA’ is a memorable dancefloor weapon, packing a serious low-end punch. 

Meanwhile ‘HEVA’ is a soaring melodic anthem, with gorgeous atmospherics and ethereal vocals flowing to an epic crescendo above an energetic bouncing groove.

Feelings of romance and hope imbue the spring months, as well as the music released this time of year. We're thrilled to present three uplifting new cuts by Jallen, Alex Byrka, & Jacqueline, which brilliantly capture the optimistic mood of the spring season.

American phenom Jallen has witnessed extraordinary radio support this past year across the globe. We were thrilled to feature him for the first time on our recent "Only Silk 03" compilation, his contribution to which is now available in full, unmixed form on this release. Specifically, Jallen's soulful remix of Schodt's classic "Angel No. 8" begins with a rolling bassline and a lush, melodic soundscape. The signature vocal stutters from the original mix tastefully punctuate the numerous midrange layers. In the song's heartfelt climax, we are treated to a triumphant breaks interlude, which crescendoes into a roaring drop.

Alex (a.k.a. Alexander) Byrka last appeared years ago on Silk with his stellar contribution to Silk Royal Showcase 02, "She Doesn't Know" (in collaboration with Bianco Soleil). It's our joy to feature him again, as his "Made In Heaven" is a truly rapturous progressive house classic in the making. Gorgeous melodic layers, including an ethereal vocal effect, join an energetic groove. In the main break, a stunning piano theme captures the 'heavenly' aura of the song and helps it reach its emotional zenith.

Like Jallen, Indonesian talent Jacqueline is a first-time contributor to our imprint. She makes an impressive debut with "Rise Up", a vintage progressive house cut that centers on a moody and infectious chord progression. A vocal stab sequence and piano motif enhance the already rich midrange, culminating in an inspired drop.

American veteran eleven.five continues to contribute brilliant progressive cuts to our label family. Recently, his collaboration with Meyce, "The Alliance" on Silk Royal, witnessed radio support from Above & Beyond. Now he's ready with a 2-track EP on Arrival, entitled "Gamble".

The title track starts off with a hypnotizing beat and intriguing sound effects, which are later accompanied by delicious woodwind notes. Stunning background stabs help build the soundscape, and in the break, we witness subtle, yet mesmerizing piano notes. The refreshing theme riff slowly builds thereafter, brilliantly surrounded by well-structured percussion layers.

The B-side, "Awkward Moment", starts out with gorgeous vocal effects and spellbinding sound effects in the background. As the song progresses, multiple delicate effects are added, thereby creating a brilliant atmosphere. The break showcases the fascinating theme riff to its full extent, hence letting the song continue in a true club-friendly soundscape.

eleven.five - Gamble [Arrival]

Aurex [Minimal Groove Concept]

Able to match emotive musical content with an endlessly complex sonic intricacy, Matt Lange has risen as a leading light at Anjunadeep's deeper end - even becoming an unlikely favourite of respected BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe.

With his "Rift" track going down as one of Anjunadeep's classic moments in 2011 (and picking up a R1 play from Mr Lowe in the process), the US-based producer begins 2012 with a double hit of deep melodic tech bliss.

Glitchy but groovy in a way that Lange seems to have mastered, "Avalon" is a brooding tech masterpiece that has shades of Radiohead to its melancholic, guitar-draped breakdown - with searching vocals adding a depth missing from so many 4/4 tracks these days.

Another track that draws on a sense of melancholy and longing, "Griffith Park" again embodies the spirit of emotional rock epic - but delivers it through the medium of forward-thinking and cutting-edge glitch techno.

It's always an exciting moment when we receive music from label veteran LTN. He has been a consistent contributor to the label and has shown no signs of slowing down. This EP features three beautifully engaging progressive house tracks that perfectly represent the renowned musicality and emotional depth of LTN's music.

The title cut, "As Tears Go By," opens up with elegant vocal hums and soft arpeggiated plucks that lull us into a calming state of tranquility. Ambience fills our heads halfway into the track, coupling itself with pristine piano keys, in front of an ever-growing chord progression. The array of timbre synchronizes as the momentum of the track builds, encapsulating the majestic sound of LTN, with which we've all fallen in love over the years.

"Wondering Soul" cascades us into a mesmerizing depth of melodic bass, while also tugging at our core. We have no choice but to accept the deep, inducing tide and follow its flow into the warm unknown. Submerged basslines glide across each other, creating a melody that organically grows around us, while calmly relinquishing any fear or doubt of where we're headed in life.

"Serene Land" embodies a rather uplifting progressive house persona to close out LTN's EP. Delayed plucks and energetic piano chords are met with textures of bass synths and drawn out vocal callings. Shortly after the breakdown, LTN melodically builds the track, reintroducing each layer until eventually dropping us back into a seductive exhibit of melodic syncopation and groove.

The icy throes of February melt momentarily to usher in LTN's first 2018 release, "Black Hole," which showcases the same emotional depth conveyed in his previous release, "As Tears Go By." Through his deft production, LTN consistently sends us on journeys that probe the depths of our mind and soul. On this release, the Indonesian sensation teams up with versatile veteran Stendahl and inimitable singer-songwriter Arielle Maren to form a unique trifecta of vocal progressive bliss.

"Black Hole" begins with thin percussive hits that steadily climb toward outer space and quickly launch us into orbit. The gorgeous vocals of Arielle Maren, which soon follow, carry with them the somber tones of forgotten connection. Followed by Stendahl's polished piano keys, we're lulled toward the halfway point, a nebula of spacey bass rhythm. The culmination of ethereal vocals, piano, and aural soundscapes form an emotional gravity that pulls on both mind and body, until Maren's final vocal hook eases us back to the ground. 

Latvian duo Blood Groove & Kikis return to the spotlight, offering an upbeat, if not euphoric approach. They transform the original introspective space journey into an energetic indulgence. Gushing snares and a thudding bass form the foundation upon which multiple layers stack. A bold analog synth pad gradually morphs into trance keys as the song reaches the quarter point. We've now fallen headfirst into the infectious composition, punctuated by Arielle Maren's brief vocal interlude. Stunning textures offer a lush backdrop for the lively beat that eventually deconstructs in the closing minutes of the arrangement.

The exceedingly promising Australian progressive house talent Elypsis contributes an atmospheric and poignant rendering. His iteration unfolds like the intricate latticework of a crystal, backed by the icy inclinations of Maren's vocal cuts. A steady, resonant bass hums throughout, nudging even the most stolid listener into movement. Beautiful melodic accents fall with the delicacy of snowflakes, and melt away amongst the rhythmic elements. The emotive piano themes carry the listener to the song's final moments, where we're left with remnants of the song's chill contemplations.
