'Deph Threats' is the debut solo album from Hampton, Virginia native Dephlow. Linking up with Portland, ME producer Phoniks to create a raw 14-track, 55 minute soundtrack focusing on inequality, social injustice and self-reflection. A year removed from collaborating with hip-hop duo Awon & Phoniks to produce "Dephacation", 2014's upbeat onslaught of bars and metaphors, Dephlow has now stepped back to a darker place and put his ability as a songwriter on full display across tracks like Hard Times, Time Is The Teacher, Lost Girls and WWPD. 32 years after Marvin Gaye’s tragic passing death, we shed a tear and celebrate his life with this refreshing tribute, just in time for what would have been The Prince of Soul’s 77th birthday. 



Counterweight Records' DJ Devastate and synth guru, Segerfalk recently made the trip to Analog Sweden’s studio, to breathe new life into Marvin’s time honored classic, "Heard It Through The Grapevine.” The concept of classic meets contemporary is magnified with verses contributed by emcees Joe Lefty and Chapee, the latter of which who recently dropped his debut solo LP, Mode7ty, produced by Tommy Black, who's sounds you may already be familiar with on “Institutionallized, off Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly LP.



Independent label Counterweight Records has lots more in store for 2016. This spring you’ll hear more from Chapee, along with beatsmith Max I Million, and his anticipated mixtape sequel, The Maxtape 2. But in the meantime, we leave you with the question: "Do You Cry,” a token of gratitude to Marvin Gaye and his unforgettable legacy.

Henry Canyon's album "Canyonland" was originally released on bandcamp something like a year ago without any distribution behind it and we felt it was painfully unnoticed. So all in all a perfect contender for a Jakarta Dubplate. It was entirely produced by French producer Keor Meteor.

Canyonland is a conceptual album that revolves around Henry Canyons' journey to Los Angeles, his struggle to adjust to a new life there, his coming to terms and attempts to keep a solid connection with his identity as a "half-French, Jewish Brooklynite" that has been transplanted into a place that is wildly different from what he was used to. It also outlines his efforts to solidify his personal and professional spheres, his romantic ups and downs and his perspective on Los Angeles life in general. Musically-speaking, this album is a much smoother ride than the topic itself betrays. Henry's baritone voice glides effortlessly over a beautiful, West-Coast boom-bap backdrop (produced by Keor Meteor), riding the tempo with technically proficient flow and great lyrics. Zoe Rose, a very talented, jazzy and soulful singer/songrwiter, makes several appearances throughout, lending her silky-smooth voice to many of the choruses. Freddy Jay provides some funky vinyl cuts on others. Open Mike Eagle also makes an appearance, lending a great guest-verse. Overall, Canyonland is a great album for both casual listeners who want something they can easily throw on in the car for a relaxing listen or more hardcore listeners who like to dig into the lyrics and think about what a rapper is conveying.

Tonight Featuring J-Live and Luscious Beats

Believe me, I don't take 'They Reminisce Over You' lightly... This is one of my all time absolute favourite tracks, hip hop or otherwise, and it's not something I'd just throw anything under or risk messing with it just for fun. So let me explain the beat in the background a bit first...

I was working on some things with Buck 65 from around 2009 to 2011-ish, and we got a lot done in that time. Some of it has come out (the Dirtbike albums, 20 Odd Years, and a few extra bits and pieces), and some of it just hasn't been possible to complete. We'll hopefully get ther eventually but it's cool, it'll happen sometime. I made some tracks for Buck to use in live performances, and I decided to go all out with the Amelie soundtrack composed by the phenomenal Yann Tiersen (who would later work with the god Sage Francis on 'The Best Of Times'). I edited it a fair bit and lined up some breaks and extras here and there, and got it all in line with Buck's 'Wicked And Weird', so all the verses and choruses would hit at the right times. I've seen him do it live and he just kills it like crazy.

I really wanted to play the beat to folks, I love the soundtrack so much and I like how this version turned out, and so I thought it would be a good chance to try and combine it with a carved-in-marble classic like TROY. So this is what we have here, with a few additional edits and tweaks on that beat I made for Buck.

Like I say, I know the weight of what I'm using, and the power of classics like this. I grew up listening to hip hop and revisiting my favourites constantly, and I hold this one sacred!

I hope you like this version of it anyway, and that somewhere in the world, Pete Rock isn't shaking his head in disapproval. I'll settle for a 3 o' clock half-mast thumbs up...
