Amidst the landscape of American-bred bass music, Duffrey has carved out a space near the tip of the spear, brandishing a reputation as a dancefloor fiasco in his own right and an integral arm of the Ultrasloth producer group. Just in time for a return to sound systems across the continent, The Rust is incredibly excited to host his latest minted release, Return to Source.

In true Duffrey fashion, the EP is replete with a pure head-nod focus, channeling smooth synthesis and pocketed bass lines into inviting, staccato rhythms. The flash and fanfare of contemporary sound design can sometimes feel like an oversaturated veneer, but Duffrey’s straightforward texture palette eases the listener into an experience that does as much justice through easy listening as it does on the club floor. Eschewing both brooding and manic atmosphere’s, his preferences and style instead lend themselves to jovial, petrol-laden anthems that roar with confidence as opposed to sheer ferocity. Traversing the stereo spaces beyond his traditional catalog, Duffrey has been at the forefront of an aural and social injection of drum-and-bass into the bloodstream of the wider bass music landscape. Brandishing a reputation for rhythmic swagger and tight instrumental interplay, his pronounced characteristics find a natural home at elevated bpm’s, delivering both an homage to and an evolution on the sound at the center of the Shred the Infinite EP.

Marrying a system-tested and storied palette to a newfound frenetic pace, Duffrey weaves between neuro, liquid, and glitched-out overtures across the EP’s runtime. The positive contrast between the aggressive, churning breakdowns and generous melodic phrases keeps the listener gliding through the meta-terrain of each track’s attitude and atmosphere, pushing and reshaping the journey across each downbeat. I recently played a Mac Miller Memorial show here in Pittsburgh hosted by Ambient Alchemists. Each performer was given their own list of 20 or so Mac Miller songs to re-work into a one hour set of their own style. The event was a ton of fun and this set went over really well. LOUD: A Mac Miller Experience - Lavier Set (Ambient Alchemists • 9/2/22)

Live in Cappadocia, Turkey, October 2022. 

This set was recorded on a hot air balloon over 3000ft in the air for a 20 person dance floor. WOW. Absolute peak life moment! This is the maximum height that balloons are allowed to fly. The views were completely otherworldly from up there. This was also one of the first DJ sets of its kind, with a generator powering a full PA sound system in the basket.

Moments like these remind me how magical life can be if you find an outlet for your artistry. 

Huge thanks to Chelsea and Oren at the Exquisite Artist Retreat for making dreams a reality. It was beyond amazing!
