The next Deep Mind Music comes from one of my dearest friends, and greatest inspirations - hems

hems and I have a special connection, we both love to adventure through musical lands strange and beguiling, evocative and unusual, and have spent many hours together digging through obscure backcatalogs or making our own noises experimenting with hems’ many synthesisers in his studio in London 🧡

hems plays music like no one else I know, he has a magic touch and deep sensitivity for representing all shades of human existence. From the sublime to the transcendent, the unsettling to the hilarious, hems’ sets takes listeners to the beyond and then further still.

I first invited hems to make a mix many years ago, so I am very happy to finally welcome an entry from him. This recording is the first 2.5 hours of an all-night 8 hour set hems played at an intimate private gathering in Mexico City in March of this year.

In this recording hems coaxes us to drift inwards, to enter into an unusual landscape, to open up to all the elements of sound, contrasting pre-Hispanic music with vintage synthesizer tracks and much more.  

Listening to hems’ sets over the years has expanded my mind towards new possibilities, his selections and genius touch for programming evoking many deep epiphanies and insights. This mix is brimming with vitality and life, I hope you enjoy this kaleidoscopic voyage into the mystical 🌿 ~

He approaches this set much like movie soundtrack, crafting a narrative with different chapters that, while distinct, come together seamlessly to create a captivating and immersive journey.

"The set ends with a track I made, built around words by Teig Sadhana about the vulnerability of men. It’s a subject that comes up often in my work as an applied psychologist, especially in conversations with boys and young men. Some carry unspoken thoughts - like feeling content with the idea of becoming a stay-at-home dad, or not pursuing traditional career ambitions. Sometimes about smaller subjects, like asking for help. Many describe pressure from society, or a lack of support from peers, when it comes to embracing less conventional paths.

I believe there’s a lot to gain, as a society, if men feel freer to speak about these thoughts. If being loved and respected is tied in the mind to career success, self-reliance and emotional toughness, it becomes difficult to let go of that framework. Historically, this mindset has been rewarded with status and security - but that doesn’t mean it’s something healthy for everyone to continue striving for.

We’re often comfortable talking about ambition, strength, and problem-solving - traits we’ve learned to view as charismatic or positive. But many of us were never taught how to speak openly about things that might be seen as weak or uncertain.

And yet, isn’t it one of the braver things - to show vulnerability in the face of discomfort or fear? Toughness can serve many purposes, but I think a more open and compassionate attitude among men toward vulnerability can help us become less protective of what’s been built in the world and in our minds, creating more space for everyone in society."

Nothing Comes Back the Same // Ben Kaczor //
SEE SIGNALS SEA NOISE

What happens if a sound archive consisting of around 50,000 hours of underwater audio material collected over the past 10 years is opened up for sound experiments, live sessions and installations? «Nothing Comes Back the Same» is a 15-minute sound piece resulting from Ben Kaczor’s engagement with the archive of the project «Computersignale». Original archive samples were processed using the upcoming sssn MAX plugin by artist & educator N EV, further manipulated with Hainbach’s Tape Station at the SMEM Museum in Fribourg, and expanded through synthesizers into new harmonic atmospheres. The work is a sonic reflection on impermanence, texture, and time. 

The audio archive is an offspring of Hannes Rickli’s artistic research project «Computersignale». The beginnings of the archive date back to 2012; it continues to expand as long as the recording equipment lasts.

The archive and its artistic processing as part of the «See Signals Sea Noise» mediation program is supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), the Ernst Göhner Foundation and the Zurich University of the Arts.

My Sunday morning involves strong black coffee on an empty stomach, followed by one massive pancake to share. Both energizing and grounding. Ideally I try to set a different tone than other mornings; less of a grind, more human.
I tried to let this mix convey this feeling, and hopefully use it myself to be in the morning and not work so hard; The music is more emotionally layered and pulls me a bit more into different directions than what I'd listen to when starting work.
